You didn’t want this ball, did you Daddy?
Posted by at 12:09 am ET 79 Comments

During the fifth inning of tonight’s whooping of the Nationals, Jayson Werth got underneath a 2-0 pitch from Garrett Mock and sent it straight up in the air headed towards the 300 level just above the CSN broadcast booth. A gentleman who was sitting up in those seats quickly realized he had a shot at the ball, so he stood up, leaned over the railing, and to the delight of the crowd, made an impressive catch. And being the good father that he is, he then handed the ball over to his daughter, who immediately turned around and tossed the ball back over the rail and into the Diamond Club behind home plate.

Whoops-a-daisy!

If you haven’t seen it already, and want a quick laugh, I advise you to proceed past the jump.

It’s quite possibly the cutest thing you’ll see all day.

Adorable. I “heard” that an usher brought her another ball later on.

  • http://www.majorleaguejerk.com Gonzo

Tug, read that girls previous tweet. Then, try to get tha hook-up.

    But I like styrofoam!!!

    Mets just signed her

  • http://www.twitter.com/underthebridge1 Walklett

I think she’s ready for D cell batteries.

The little girl was the lead in to the 1AM Sportscenter.

  • http://twitter.com/waverider15 Bridge to Lidge

Ha that was cute but I would’ve been like “wtf?!” if I was her dad

  • Danny

    Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

    so cute, though.

  • Lynniemac

That was seriously, ovary-skipping-a-beat adorable. But that is why you say to the child: “don’t throw it, okay?” before handing her the ball.

  • http://www.sports-boards.net Todd (ill)

I think meech et al would have needed a new pair of collective pants if he was rocking a Birdland shirt. Missed opportunity right there, I tells ya.

  • scrapple joe

the real question is, who did she plunk in the back of the head in the seating below them.

  • Dutch Dalton’s Brain

    a classic

  • Leann

At least you can tell he’s raising her on Phillies baseball!! You go, papa!

  • Dave Cash

Big deal. Eric Bruntlett has similar range.

  • http://twitter.com/_shann shann

    Sorry Tug — styrofoam’s a deal breaker.

  • http://www.soundedgoodonpaper.com/blog Ziggy

yeah my dad and I went to the game. He called me this morning to tell me the guy was on Preston and Steve and said that the Phillies gave him a new ball.

  • James Fayleez

“Kudos to the Dad for not launching that little lady right OVER the side AFTER the ball…”

The Dad and Mom’s reaction were perfect – that’s what’s good about this Country – that’s what good about Philadelphia – a lot more people know how to act than don’t – and all we ever hear about are the bad actors – quite frankly I’m sick of it. Glad to see a good example out there – as we used to say in the old days – “way to be – way to be” – congratulations to that little family setting such a great example of love and patience – rightfully realizing – what’s really important – way to be!

  • Diane

    Adorable! Loved it!

  • Saint

haha – these two have become an overnight sportscenter sensation… they can’t get enough of em

  • http://genericshow.com GenericFanGroup

That child should have got a spanking teach that kid a lesson….dont raise your kid to become a Cubs fan.

  • Sarge

Sure, that was CUTE and all, but it doesn’t hold a candle to when I sang “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” with my grandson Denver.

  • http://www.sports-boards.net Todd (ill)

I like how he gives the kid a high five when she puts her hand up.

Such innocent, happy moments like this couldn’t possibly happen in Philadelphia. As you may or may not have heard, people, we booed Santa Claus. WE BOOED SANTA CLAUS!

/screw you national sports media, let’s see your spin on this one
    //lazy Philly-bashing choads
///looking at you, Wilbon and Cowherd

  • Lynniemac

She must have thought everything was supposed to go over the rail after all those times with the batteries.

  • Phillies617

I didn’t know Pat Burrell was back in philly.

  • JackFax

Thank heaven’s for Little Girls…so cute, stay wittle forever…

    ;)

  • http://www.majorleaguejerk.com Gonzo

Aw man. One day later, and this video still gets me verclempt.

  • Castro

WOW!!! that was an amazing catch. It reminded me of the catch out in left field earlier in the year… you know the one I am talking about, Chris Costes last home run as a Philadelphia Phillie, the catch that day was amazing… Oh wait a minute that ball was dropped. NEVERMIND

  • http://twitter.com/JayDashDog Jdashdog

Yeah, that asshole really ruined Coste’s final homer in red pinstripes. A long drive followed by a great catch in the stands? You just can’t beat that…

  • http://www.thefightins.com meech.one

    DAMN YOU, CASTRO!!!

  • BigMiles

According to mlb.com the family will be on the Today Show tomorrow. Thank you Emily for throwing that ball…..it has led to a much needed morale/moral boost for our fanbase. After the incident at the park earlier this year and all of the negative shit we hear, we finally have a chance to be like “hey, look guys, we told you there were some good people in the stands.” Again, thank you to this family.

  • http://www.dabestofdaweb.com Bob

That had to have been a Philadelphia Phillies fan from southern New Jersey. They don’t make them that cute in Philadelphia.

  • bigcountrydan

I think the Team ought to give Dad Steve a Autographed Ball. His Darling Daughter’s little mistake has given the family an unforgetable memory, and the MLB a ton of Free Advertising.
Hope Dad Record’s the mistake for later down the road to show his Famous Daughter’s First Major League Throw.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gabriellejuliet Gabrielle

@bob no way, cuz that’s a hot dad, and they don’t make em that hot in south jersey. trust me.

  • Charleen Block

You should make DADDY OF THE YEAR for your understanding. This is so cute. It,s only a ball. She is much more precious.

  • Cowbell Kid

That dad is soft, just like the rest of Philadelphia. If some kid tries to pull that classless garbage down here at Tropicana Field, that little shit is going over the railing after it.

  • http://www.majorleaguejerk.com Gonzo

Keep your ignorance and rudeness out of our blog, Kid.

  • will.H

cowbell kid, you’re still useless. not even a little bit clever

  • melinda watanabe

i love the innocent moment of dad and daughter! the Best!

  • ade

Hey, give that girl ball BACK! That was her moment.

  • MoyerIsMyHero

    CHASING HENDERSON!!!

  • Martin

You have to see this with child’s logic: the little one didn’t make a mistake nor a random ilogical act, i am sure she threw it back to the field because she wouldn’t keep something that was not hers and so that the game could continue, the cutie didn’t know the umpire has several balls to replace those sent out of the park… Innocence at its best… so cute.

  • illafifth

Capped off NBC Nightly News tonight, good stuff : )

  • karaokernie

I KNOW THAT A LOT OF THOUGHTS RACED THROUGH DAD’S HEAD IN THAT FIRST THREE SECONDS, BUT DAD DID THE RIGHT THING SEEING THE FUNNY IN IT ALL AND HUGGING HIS DAUGHTER. HE SHOULD BE REWARDED WITH AN AUTOGRAPHED BALL FOR BEING A GOOD DADDY IN THIS TENSE SITUATION. WE NEED TO SEE AND HEAR OF MORE GOOD PARENTS LIKE HIM IN THESE CRAPPY OBAMINATION TIMES THAT WE HAVE TO LIVE IN. GREAT JOB DAD, AND GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. : ) : )

  • Juncan

Future Pitcher……everybody beware when she grows up. Cute little girl.

  • http://yahoo.com au2

WOW!!!WHAT A GREAT KID AND NICE DAD!!!!

  • http://none aceshellie

” JUST TOO BEAUTIFUL” Great parenting on both Dad & Mom’s part, You can REALLY see how much LOVE and patience they have, and be ASSURED THAT THEY DO PRACTICE this daily that’s why she was so cool to just Play Ball!! Daddy & Mommy I really Pray that this gets ALL OVER THE WORLD & for parents that show Love & Patience daily can smile themselves and say way to go little one YOU showed the WORLD that there is ALLOT of Mommies & Daddies out there doing the same. AND for the Mommies & Daddies that are not so fortunate to have that, This is a GREAT time to say, WE WANT THAT TOO & go get it. GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU MOMMIES & DADDIES IN THIS WOURLD

  • Liz

    truly a dedicated father!

  • bigmyc

Wow. Look at all the new onlookers to this site because of that little girl and her father. If they stick around they’ll have no idea what they are in for.

  • Paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay-dro’s soul glo is jealous of Kendrick’s sinker

right bigmyc, their minds would be hypnotized or somethin like that. I guess Duk’s blog in yahoo is quite popular. Notice that when you’re the very same age, you’ll do the same exact thing as she did.

  • Lynniemac

This is one of those videos that everytime I watch it, it just gets better. Much like the “how big is Will” video.

  • http://www.majorleaguejerk.com Gonzo

Nice one Lynn. Will is adorable.

  • TAM

Just one word will do it, “PRICELESS”!

  • Meg

I was thinking the same thing Lynniemac! I love the next generation of Phillies fans

  • denis

admirable trait of a dad. cute li’l kid…

  • Trent

Can we get some backlash on this please?

  • AMGSan

i can see the father saying ” it’s alrite…” while hugging the little girl… I wanna be a better father after seeing this….

  • Eel

Classic yes. Adorable yes. Priceless…of course.
The “TEAM” should all sign a ball and give to her.
As they talk in comercials about “PRICELESS”…this was it.

  • Mari

When in trouble, run to dad’s arms- the strong arms will protect you no matter what. In those three seconds this dad just grew into a man. For his little girl. Thank you great dads everywhere.

  • http://www.superfantabulousblog.blogspot.com maria

The real question is, is it beyond baseball?

    Absolutely.

  • Lynniemac

Awesome, maria. I can hear the voiceover now.

  • http://whodoesheplayfor.wordpress.com/ photographerN

This guy, his daughter and his family were just on The Today Show. At the end of the interview, Meredith Viera presented him with a ball signed by Jayson Werth and with Phillies jerseys for the whole family…WITH THEIR OWN LAST NAME ON THE BACK!!!!! If I see them at the ballpark – cute or not – I’m posting their pictures!

  • atidrep

Now thats the true meaning of Daddy’s Little Girl>>> Too Cute. Anyway Phillies should have given him the ball back because of this incident. Myself being a single black female at 35 hasnt never paid much attention to Baseball but hell this has definitely sparked my attention. My girlfriend was telling me recently how much fun she had at a minor league game she went to. So maybe I will take start taking me out to park and buy me some popcorn.

  • Beauhemian

This girl’s got a mean sinker.

  • http://www.yahoo.com Tom Allen

In all my life I have never seen anything so beautiful as that dad’s concern for his daughters feelings. Congrats to one awesome dad

  • Brandon

They are everywhere now. Jimmy fallon talked about her last night too, and took the mets joke from Fran. And it seems this little girl made the media not hate the fans anymore.

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

I saw the Jimmy Fallon steal last night too, but you beat me to it Brandon. As soon as I saw it I was like “his writers were totally reading The Fightins Dot Com”

  • Hal

The Phillies should let her throw out the first pitch at Fan Appreciation Day! She’d have to move up a little, of course.

  • Cheryl

I would expect nothing less of a reaction from Dad. My cousin is good family, from good family.

  • Cola Classic

these two have become what Rob Dyrdek would call “an internet sensation”

  • sue

I was right behind them when it all happened. Sitting in the HC section with my son. It was moving how all the fans around were yelling down to whomever caught the ball after Emily threw it over. They were yelling and waving there hands to throw it back. I am really glad that they got all this attention and especially a ball signed by Jason. It made my night.

  • http://whodoesheplayfor.wordpress.com/ photographerN

And HERE is my follow-up on this story.

  • Big R

Classic!!!! talk about overnight celebrity! Go Phils

  • Babbajaba

Adorable, what a good sport (the daddy). God Bless him!
