Halladay Has A New Little Buddy: Kyle Kendrick
Posted by Tug Haines at 6:12 pm ET 37 Comments

It's Tempting To Call This One "Fail-Again's Island."

Kyle Kendrick wants that 5th spot, and he’s willing to drastically improve his work ethic to get it. Jim Salisbury says that while Kendrick would show up around 8am every morning in previous Spring Trainings, he has begun arriving at Bright House Field at quarter to six every morning this year.

I don’t know if it’s personal initiative on Kyle’s part or some kind of Dubee-sponsored Sturdy Wings program, but Kendrick has buddied up with the great Roy Halladay to pick up a few pointers on how to kick ass.

Kendrick, 25, has benefitted from his up-close look at Halladay’s legendary work ethic. Keeping up with Halladay means getting up pretty early – and getting to bed by 9 p.m.

“My work ethic has gotten a lot better, I think,” Kendrick said. “Before, I didn’t have a plan. Now I have a plan, thanks to Roy. He’s the hardest worker I’ve ever seen.”

I’m guessing he’s heard that old chestnut about success breeding success. You can’t improve yourself by hanging around a bunch of scrubs. It’s a good move on his part, I’m guessing that by simply grabbing his own destiny by the balls, he’s locked himself in for at least a spot in the bullpen.

Who am I kidding: initiative is never rewarded by management.

Me and the Doc have a special relationship… I don’t wanna get too graphic but I sucked his dick for drugs.

  2. Meg says:

I am especially excited about Kyle’s new facial hair. I think that more than the 4:30 wake up calls his new beard is gonna help him sink that change-up

  3. Sal Fasano's Beard says:

Everyone is calling Jamie Moyer a bitch… First J.C. now Kyle basically owning the 5th spot in the rotation.

  4. Tug Haines says:

I’m pretty sure we’re going to see Moyer pitching 5th in April because that appears to be the company line, but in May…

  5. Sal Fasano's Beard says:

I don’t know about that, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Moyer starts getting up a little earlier for work now that Kyle is.

  6. Matt says:

The reason Moyer gets started early is so he can get done early. The Senior Discount at Old Country Buffet is only from 2-4. Gotta save that 10%!

  7. Bobby D says:

that’s Tyler Walker on the left.

  8. will.H says:

gotta love a Role Models reference, #1. good work

  9. John K says:

Man, give me a break.. He doesn’t deserve one of those valuable roster spots juts b/c he is trying hard. Kyle Kendrick is not a very good pitcher. If this makes him better, fine, but I’m from Missouri so shoooooow meeeeee somethin’

  10. MOAB says:

    d’awwwwwwwww

  11. World Forking Champions '11 says:

LOL Photoshop of the decade right there.

Honestly though, I really hope Kendrick can get his act together and prove he can be a good pitcher…like we all used to think he was.

  12. Phylan says:

@John K he doesn’t need to be very good for the 5th starter slot, he just needs to be serviceable, which he could be if he develops enough command of his secondary stuff so that he can be effective when his sinker isn’t sinking. Oh yeah, and he has to get his sinker to sink. Of course, there are a million of these “I have a whole new approach! Turning over a new leaf! All new work ethic!” stories every spring training, so we’ll see if this is one of the legit ones, but it certainly can’t hurt shadowing the fucking Doc

  13. HummerX says:

Doc looks like Phil Mickleson there. im disturbed

  14. Tug Haines says:

Something tells me Jonas Grumby didn’t subject himself to grueling conditioning exercises at 5:45am every morning.

  15. will.H says:

even on a good day, moyer maxes out at 6IP. I mean, on this best day..

as much as I love Grampy, theres no reason to save his feelings. If he competes and beats out Kendrick for the 5th spot, let him have it.. but if Kyle starts with this attitude and finishes with it, he’ll be a decent pitcher. He’ll suprise people just like Moyer a few years back.. and he pitched in the THREE SPOT.

Look how far we’ve come when we can argue over the 5th spot in the rotation.

  16. Jeff Probst says:

His girl Stephanie got voted off the island last night and he will get voted off the Phillies squad. Her first husband lasted a few months. How long will Double K last.

  17. Sal Fasano's Beard says:

Why didn’t we keep pedro and have the 5th spot filled by a pedro/moyer combo?

  18. Adam Eaton says:

    Holy shit! BAWHAHAHAHAHAH!

  19. meerkat says:

I tip my cap to that photoshop art.

I’d be happy with 5 IPs from KK in the 5th spot each start..

  20. Lynniemac says:

This is definitely in the top 5 greatest Photoshop jobs ever.

  21. maria says:

What photoshop are you guys talking about? Clearly, just a candid shot.

  22. Blaise says:

Halladay kind of looks like Tom McCarthy in that picture

  23. bigmyc says:

Why am am I getting the impression that people either don’t take KK seriously or that they don’t want him around in the first place?

Just a feeling that I get.

  24. World Forking Champions '11 says:

Not me, I always liked Kendrick!

A lot of people just seem to have given up on him though, and pretty much expect him to suck forever.

As for me? I think that kid has some talents, and this may be the year when he can prove he had something besides luck a few years back.

  25. Heathcliff Slocumb says:

I support KK thru & thru

  26. Watrick says:

It’s all a big joke that they are playing on him. The Mets were actually involved, too. Just watch, they’ll tell him he’s going to make the team and be the 5th starter, and then Brett Myers is going to jump out from behind a plant and yelled “You’ve been Rednecked! Again!”

    Just watch.

  27. Watrick says:

    Calling Reuben Frank right now.

  28. Morandini Turned Three says:

If he’s got to be in bed by 9 he’ll never make it out of the 6th inning.

  29. Watrick says:

Oh well, he stole my thunder before I got on the air.

  30. Shane's beard says:

Roy’s growing his biceps and his arms.

  31. Bobby D says:

I feel like Kendrick can do the job. If he’s not just talking up his change up then he should now have the full complement of pitches that he needs to thrive in the 5th starter role. He’s never going to have dominant stuff but neither does Happ. I view them as being very similar. KK had an impressive run as a starter in 07 and with these supposed improvements, he should be able to recapture some of that success.

  32. World Forking Champions '11 says:

I don’t know, there was a time when we all thought Kendrick could even be as high as a #3 starter…but it seems like his ceiling is as a solid #5 guy at best.

  33. Michael says:

Eude Brito is a free agent. Why hasn’t Ruben snatched him up for the fifth spot yet? Until KK develops a gyroball, I’m not a believer.

  34. Joe D says:

Saw the feature on CSN this morning about Kendrick…yeah he has to be creeping Roy out at this point. Showing up the same time as him…growing a beard. He is going to run Roy out of town.

  35. Marky from Morrell Tavern says:

    moyer has to be jealous

  36. bigmyc says:

Joe D. (while laughing), somebody needs to stop KK before he scuttles the season.

  37. will.H says:

someone once bragged about knowing Eude Brito back in college. I didn’t know what to say.
