What happened?
The Phillies took game one of the double header behind an offensive outburst and a solid start from Joe Blanton, while the Marlins shut them out to hand Jamie Moyer his first career loss in Florida in game two.
Who did what? (Game 1)
Joe Blanton (W, 11-7) tossed seven scoreless innings in game one, allowing only two hits and two walks, while striking out nine.
Jimmy Rollins went 1 for 5 with an RBI.
Shane Victorino went 2 for 3 with two runs and a stolen base (24).
Chase Utley went 1 for 4 with a run.
Ryan Howard went 2 for 5 with three RBIs.
Jayson Werth went 1 for 3 with two RBIs.
Raul Ibanez went 1 for 5 with a homer (32) and an RBI.
Miguel Cairo went 2 for 5 with a double (2) and an RBI.
Paul Bako went 1 for 4 with a run.
Oh no.
Could it be?
I think it is.
Yes, my friends.
EVERYBODY HITS!
In honor of this momentous occasion, here is a video of the littlest big fan in all of Philadelphia.
Josh Johnson (L, 15-5) gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out ten.
Chris Coghlan went 2 for 5 with a run.
Hanley Ramirez went 1 for 4 with a double (40) and a run.
Dan Uggla went 1 for 3 with two RBIs.
Who did what? (Game 2)
Jamie Moyer (L, 12-10) allowed three runs on nine hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out five.
Chase Utley went 2 for 4 with a double (28).
Anibal Sanchez (W, 3-7) pitched eight shutout innings, allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out seven.
Hanley Ramirez went 2 for 4 with a double (41) and an RBI.
Dan Uggla went 1 for 4 with a homer (30) and an RBI.
Cody Ross went 1 for 4 with a homer (23) and an RBI.
Leo Nunez (S, 24) pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn the save.
What does this mean?
With just over a week remaining in the regular season, the Philadelphia Phillies are getting ever closer to clinching the National League east title for the third year in a row. Despite getting shutout in game two of the double-dip with the Florida Marlins, the Phillies took one step closer to realizing that goal once again, as they split the double header against the Fish.
The Phillies cruised to an easy win in game one, as Joe Blanton K’ed nine over seven shutout innings to lead the Phillies past the Fish. The offense tagged Josh Johnson for four runs in five innings, with the big blow coming in the top of the fifth, when Jayson Werth lifted a two-out, two-run single to center field to plate Shane Victorino and Chase Utley.
They would add on five more runs in the top of the eighth, courtesy a solo shot from Raul Ibanez, a sac fly from Jimmy Rollins, and a two run single from Ryan Howard that capped the scoring for the Phillies.
The Marlins put three on the board in the bottom of the frame, but it was too little, too late, as the Phillies had all but wrapped up game one of the double-dip.
Game two proved to beĀ different story altogether, as the offense was shut down by Anibal Sanchez, who allowed only four base runners over eight shutout innings en route to the win and the split. He allowed two hits, both to Chase Utley, who was also the only the second (and last) Phillie to reach second base when he doubled to lead off the seventh inning.
Jamie Moyer, who has never lost a game in Florida, was tagged for the loss, but certainly not for lack of effort. He was solid over seven innings, allowing one three runs and striking out five.
With the split against the Marlins, combined with Atlanta’s win over the Mets, the Phillies see their magic number drop to five games. The Fish stayed at eight games back, with the Braves picked up a half-game and are 7.5 back in the division.
What’s next for our heroes?
The Phillies and the Fish face off in Florida for the last time in 2009, with Cole Hamels (10-9, 4.07) taking on Rick VandenHurk (2-2, 4.24).

Jimmy actually reached third in the first inning. They just have to keep winning series so tomorrow is important, especially since Cole is starting.
Do you think it would kill the Mets to maybe just win a game against the Braves? I don’t think that’s asking for too much.
How big is Will?
YEEEEEEAHHHHHHHHH!
Nice, Gonzo. And now I have to go watch that video. Again.
BTW, I read your piece on Joe Morgan at MLJ, and I have one problem with your premise: in order for him to “realize that the entire time he spent NOT playing in Cincy, his biggest attribute at the plate was getting on base a lot despite his shitty batting average”, he would have to acknowledge there was a time when he didn’t play for Cincy.
I have to admit that I was so happy with beating Johnson and those pussies in the first game that the second game didn’t mean shit to me. I would certainly not be opposed to us beating their asses tomorrow, however. Time for Cole to put the finishing touches on his bid to be our #1 starter in the playoffs again.
That’s a good point Lynnie. He never EVER talks about playing on other teams.
Anyone know when the repeats of the games come on?
Josh Johnson, Anibal Sanchez… I’d like you to meet Carl Pavano. Enjoy a similar career path.
anyone catch jimmy munching on a chaco taco during the game
It looked like some kind of nutrition bar or some shit.
“Man, that Anibal Sanchez sure has that “no-hit stuff” that you those scouts rave about. Sanchez was one of those rookies that tossed a no no and oh brother that sure brings back memories of Bud Smith and Jose Jimenez. They sure were some exciting young pitchers to watch! Watching that game last night reminded me of we had Eric Milton. What a pleasure it was to watch that guy go toe the rubber. When you watch these guys, it just goes to show you how good you have to be to throw one of those wacky things.”

I, for one, welcome your return Whitmore.
