Posted by Dash Treyhorn at 10:17 pm ET 24 Comments

What happened?

Cole Hamels got roughed up as the Phils lost their second in a row to the Braves to fall to 39-36.

Who did what?

Cole Hamels (4-5) took the loss, giving up seven runs in four innings. He allowed nine hits, two walks and struck out one.

Shane Victorino went 1 for 3 with a walk.

Jayson Werth went 0 for 2 with two walks and a run.

Greg Dobbs went 0 for 3 with an RBI.

Jair Jurrjens (6-6) went seven innings, giving up one run for the win. He allowed one hit, four walks while striking out six.

Martin Prado went 2 for 4 with a double (13) and two RBIs.

Chipper Jones went 2 for 4 with a double (13) and three RBIs.

Brian McCann went 2 for 5 with two RBIs.

Matt Diaz went 3 for 5 with a homer (4) and 2 RBIs.

What does this mean?

Jimmy Rollins isn’t hitting.

Cole Hamels isn’t pitching.

And the Phillies aren’t winning.

What’s next for our heroes?

In the series finale, J.A. Happ (5-0, 3-0) takes on Javier Vasquez (5-7, 3.04).

Bonus baseball!

On Sunday, I took a trip to scenic Cooperstown, New York to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame. I’m ashamed to say that it was my first trip to Baseball Mecca, and I can safely say that it won’t be my last. They were showcasing the Phils and their 2008 World Series run that weekend, so I saw a lot of Phillies fans on the premises, which made me forget that I was in Mets and Yankees.

It was great to see Blanton’s home run bat, Werth’s spikes and Bruntlett’s winter-cap. (Unfortunately, his beard wasn’t on display.) I even got to sit on some seats of the old Connie Mack Stadium. Very cool. However, the coolest part of the weekend was running into a Phils’ fan who was adorned in one of The Fightins dot com’s finests – The Matt Stairs tee. I had literally just parked and got out of my car, and this guy was the first person I see. I shot him a “I like that shirt, man” and went on my way.

So, Fightins dot com reader/patron/cool guy, it was nice to meet you.

Had Bruntlett’s beard been on display it would have gotten stolen. Displaying something of that great value requires security that the Baseball HOF just can’t offer.

  2. 85 says:

Thanks for the HOF story, Dash. Anything other than discussion of tonight’s game is much appreciated.

Honestly, though… what in the hell are these guys doing?

  3. Tug Haines says:

*presses heels of palms against face and makes loud fart noise*

  4. Nicci says:

    WHAT THE FUCCCCCCCCCCCCK Phillies!!!

we need our original team back ASAP!

  5. Heese says:

Going into tonight’s game, lefties were hitting .323 off of Jurrjens. So naturally the Phillies load up on lefties and crank out 1 hit over 7. Fantastic. They are going to strikeout so much against Vazquez tomorrow.

  6. Whoa, whoa, WHOA! EVERYBODY RELAX!!!!!!

    Rodrigo Lopez is starting Friday!

  7. Um, complain about the offense, sure. But Cole Hamels was embarrassing tonight. Anyone tired of seeing him prance around the mound and whine? No?

  8. @85 Sure thing. These recaps are tough to do when the Phillies keep finding ways to lose.

  9. Fink says:

Cole has always sounded like a wuss with his effeminate voice. Now he is pitching like one.

  10. mike says:

How many wastes of roster spots does this team have? Third string catcher…check. two failed SF Giants middle relievers…check. A backup catcher who is only still here because he is a “blue collar, hard worker, some more typical philadelphia bullshit and is a better author than he is catcher”…check. A starter who is 46 years old…check. An ace who sucks currently…check. A leadoff hitter who is a downgrade to desi relaford…check. Other than that and our sudden lack of heart and hustle we are in great shape. Not to mention the whole Brad Lidge sucks and JC is now off his “GNC Store bought supplement”

  11. Gonzo says:

it’s easy to beat up on Bruntlett, Bako and Taschner. But these guys don;t even play more than once a week. It’s the starting lineup and rotation that has been shitting the bed.

  12. gabrielle says:

    mike, that is a long, checked-off list…

seriously, something needs to happen soon. i can’t stand to watch us lose again.

  13. Harry says:

@Gonzo – are you kidding me? Bruntlett is this team’s go to right handed hitter off the bench.

  14. Jdashdog says:

Come on guys, obviously the Phillies aren’t going to be in first for the whole season – It wouldn’t be the Philly way. They have to play really badly for a long stretch and no where near resemble the squad we have all grown to love (with the exception of Taschner – nobody loves him), get 3 or 4 games back so they can resume the underdog status that they relish, get hot in mid-August, and make a late season charge. I remember at one point last year I had conceded that the Mets would win the division and Delgado might win MVP. It was pretty rough. I couldn’t sleep, eat, or even maintain an erection. Both my professional and personal life we suffering, so I went to the doctor about that last thing. After extensive weeks of testing and misdiagnosis the Phils suddenly began winning again and I got my chub back. Needless to say though, I haven’t felt so much as a tingle in my peepee as of late. Good day.

  15. Jon says:

Can Charlie PLEASE get Jimmy out of the leadoff hole. It’s killing us right now. Werth should be the leadoff man on this team. He was third on the team in OBP last year and hes third on the team again this year and his slugging percentage isnt high enough where you need him to hit 3, 4, or 5 to consistently drive in runs. Thats what Chase, Ryan, and Raul are for. Werth works deep into counts, fouls a lot of pitches off, is a threat on the basepaths, and does what a leadoff hitter needs to do…GET ON BASE! Leave Victorino in the 2 hole and bump Jimmy down to 6 or 7 where he belongs.

Ive also had it with Coste, Bako, Bruntlett, and Taschner. Get them the fuck out of here. Im starting to get really pissed at the way this team goes about its business. This isnt 2008 anymore fellas, WAKE THE FUCK UP

  16. Harry says:

I will say it again – Ruben Amaro is extremely dumb.

  17. Here Come Da Judge says:

paul bako, jack taschner, tyler walker. all fucking scrubs we signed shortly into the season/spring training and tehy’re playing roles on our team. these guys should be bagging groceries somewhere cause they fuckin suck. on a sidenote former phillies great bruce chen has the start tonight for the royals

  18. meech.one says:

I dunno about you guys, but I think we need at least one more catcher on this roster.

  19. Here Come Da Judge says:

trade drabek and carrasco for paulino. you never know when a catcher might go down and you’re left with only two on the roster

  20. D. Whitmore says:

Is Werth still considered the “emergency catcher”? Because that makes 4. 2 more and we have 6. The only other team with 6 “catchers”?. Yup, you guessed it, The Village People. So call up Marson and Hoover and make it happen Ruben.

    /shoots self in face

  21. Jon says:

Lets bring Lieberthal back so he can end ANOTHER inning. I swear that man ended an inning more than anyone in the history of baseball. I was at a game at home against the Rangers a few years ago when he came up with one out and no one on. I bet my friend $50 he would end the inning even though there was only one out. Sure enough he miraculously got on base after getting plunked and the next batter hit a can of corn out to center field. Well good old Mikey takes off like the gates just opened at Chruchill Downs, never once looking back, and gets doubled up at first to end the inning. Its sad but I think he would be an upgrade over what we have at “catcher” right now, and I use the term loosely with Coste and Bako back there because I dont think they even qualify.

  22. StotheJ says:

Werth has been playing great this season and, not to bring down Ruiz or Coste, I would love to see Werth behind the plate sometime. I imagine a spider with a catchers mask and sweet facial hair that would completely screw with any batter’s head. But yes, Jimmy should not be leading off, he has been downgraded to lower positions and done better at the plate every time. Charlie needs to mix things up and spark a fire under this team.

  23. gris yeeler says:

yeah, cole can play first base and davey lopes can pinch run

slotheJ, do you realize how many stolen bases the other team would have before jayson werth figures out his footwork. hes not a catcher, hes an emergency catcher which means he knows how to crouch down and maybe block a ball.

i agree with the shake it up theory, but not that shakey

  24. D. Whitmore says:

    @gris yeeler

he was a first round pick as a catcher a good one at that. Baseball Prospectus 1999 felt that Werth was a good catcher, noting that “he nailed 64 would-be base thieves, the second most in pro ball last year.

this isnt like asking carlos delgado (another top catching prospect at one time) to get back behind the dish.
