What happened?
Jay Happ won his 10th game of the season as the Phillies beat the Mets to move to 70-50 on the season.
Who did what?
Jay Happ (W, 10-2) gave up one run on eight hits in seven innings. He walked two and struck out one.
Chase Utley went 2 for 4 with a homer (26) and two RBIs.
Jayson Werth went 2 for 5 with two doubles (22).
Raul Ibanez went 1 for 4 with a double (26) and a run.
Pedro Feliz went 1 for 3 with an RBI.
Brad Lidge (S, 24) struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to nail down the save.
Tim Redding (ND) pitched five shutout innings of one-hit ball. He walked three and struck out four.
Pat Misch (L, 0-1) gave up two runs in one-third of an inning to take the loss.
Jeff Francoeur went 1 for 4 with a double (20) and a run.
Omir Santos went 1 for 3 with an RBI.
What does this mean?
I said it before, and I’ll say it again: The 2009 National League Rookie of the year award is Jay Happ’s to lose. After leading the Phillies to another win, the fourth in his last four starts, he is now the owner of a 2.59 ERA, good enough for fourth in the National League.
Coming off a game in which the Phillies were outplayed by the sub-sub-par Mets, Younger James proved yet again to the be stopper. While he wasn’t as dominant as his recent starts, he was good enough to hold the Mets to one run over seven strong innings to set the stage for Ryan Madson and Brad Lidge.
The offense was less than spectacular for the second straight night against a pitcher that they should have knocked around, but a few key hits was more than enough to lead the Phillies to their 70th win of the season. They are a season high 20 games over .500, and with the Marlins falling to the Braves, The Fightins find themselves with a 6.5 game lead over the two teams.
What’s next for our heroes?
In game three of the series, Pedro Martinez (1-0, 4.50) makes his return to New York against Oliver Perez (3-3, 6.06)

muck the fets
happ > hamels????
happ, lee, blanton > hamels
and possibly old man combo > hamels
the hamburgler > ’09 hamels
he’ll come around
try to find that video of the guy slapping around the mets fan
with sarge’s amazing post-fight commentary
“Just coolin’ him off…oh my!”
thank jeebus Utley hit a clutch homer, it’s been a little while since that happened.
I think Pedro will be extra pumped to prove himselfagainst the Mets tomorrow against Oli Perez.
Granted Lidge has had his fair share of struggles all season, He looked great tonight and didn’t show off like a complete jackass such as K-Rod. Its embarrassing when he puts on his post Save antics. Muck the Fets is right….
Tim Redding has always pitched well against us. Before tonight, 12 starts, 5 wins, 1.14 WHIP and 3.35 ERA. Tonight, 5 innings, 1 hit, 3 BB, no runs. Luckily, the Phils always kick it up a notch against the bullpen.
Ollie Perez against the Phils: 13 starts, 71 innings, 56 hits, 54 walks!!!(That’s insane) 3.55 ERA and 1.54 WHIP.
The key player in this game is Jayson Werth. He will always be at bat with 1 or 2 men on base. He is hitting .306 against lefties this year with 11 HR and 35 RBI in just 151 at bats.
Now it’s Sunday, and I’m faced with my weekly dilemma:
Do I watch “The Charlie Manuel Show” and “Behind the Pinstripes,” or do I watch “Escándalo TV Extra?”
Did you know, with Utley’s latest hit to “Utley’s Corner”, that he now has I think 4 homers at Citi/Taxpayer stadium? That’s good for 2nd, just one behind 2-3 Metros that have 5 (!!!) total at the stadium. That means, he can possibly have more homers than any Mess player does at their fancy new stadium that no one goes to, but everyone helped pay for.
The game last night was great…was sittin right behind the guy with the orange “Utley’s Corner” sign…real cool dude from Philly area that took the trip up there like myself…he really does own that corner when he plays there…walkin around the stadium felt more like a home game with the sea of red that was there…and i swear there were more “Lets go Phillies” chants then “Lets go Mets”…awesome time
A lot more Phils phans this time around… good show. Happ = ROY.
