Tommy Mendonca has had a whirlwind season. He’s been a member of 4 professional baseball organizations since the Winter Meetings last year. Originally drafted by the Texas Rangers, the Oakland Athletics selected him in the Rule 5 draft then released him the day before his birthday. He signed with the Camden Riversharks and played in 8 games before the Phillies plucked him up and placed him on the roster in Reading, presumably as organizational depth – I say this because the Phillies have a lot more time and money invested in Cody Asche and Maikel Franco as third basemen.

The Reading Fightin Phils aren’t having the best season. They are currently 12 games under .500. But Tommy Boy is having a great week at the plate. After a four hit night in Bowie last week,  Mendonca went 5 for 5 in yesterday’s win against the Akron Aeros and brought his average up almost 60 points to .313 (66 plate appearances).

(tip of the hat to @AnthonyBurkhart for his interesting and enjoyable article)

Fun fact: Tommy’s dad, Robert Mendonca, played one year of pro ball for Phillies’ former NYPL affiliate Batavia Clippers.
