That was a helluva run, boys. Harry woulda been proud.

I know you’re depressed this morning (like I am).  But just remember — if you’re a fan of a particular baseball team, and you devote entirely too much time and energy into following your favorite squad (like I do), you may never witness a run quite like the run the Phillies have been on for the past year and a half.  Yeah, I know you wanted that second straight World Series trophy (and subsequent bragging rights for the next year), but when it came down to it, the Yankees had three solid starters take the mound for two starts each, and we had Cliff Lee.  It’s disappointing, sure, but in a short series like this, sometimes things just don’t go your way.  The Yankees were better in the key spots all series long, and just outlasted us for six games.  No use complaining about it.

In a way, this year was more fun last.  There’s a certain confidence you get after your team wins the World Series.  In 2008, a lot of people were just waiting for something bad to happen, like they knew that Philadelphia couldn’t possibly win a championship.  This year?  Complete 180°.  No matter the situation, no matter how many runs we were down or who was up at the plate, you kinda expected the team to win.  And that, folks, is a good fucking feeling.

It would’ve been pretty sweet to take down those Yankees — especially if we could have come back from a 3-1 series deficit — but alas, it wasn’t meant to be.  But we made Harry the K proud.  And that run by the Phillies this year kept his memory alive.  Any time I see some highlights of 2009 or recall a particular game, the first thing I’ll think about is that HK patch.

Thanks, Phillies.  And thanks to every single one of you who stopped by The Fightins in 2009.  We ain’t going nowhere.

I’ll leave you with this, a post-game quote from Jayson Werth brought to us by the Twitter feed of John R. Finger:

I still fucking love this team.

  • http://www.4daysrest.com 4daysrest.com

I think meech shares a sentiment that a lot of us have felt throughout this entire year. Well said.

  • Pat

    this really,really,really hurts

  • Stu

I could not have said it better myself meech. I STILL fucking love this team. More heart, more character, and less douchebags, than any other playoff team. The Yankees may have been a better team but everyone on that team needs to keep there head held high, it was an AWESOME run. Now i just wish i could make up for all the sleep i missed watching them kick the bag out of Colorado and LA.

  • PhillyCuban

    Amen

    Also, fuck SEPTA

  • Leon Black

get in dat ass next year

  • Nikita Sixx

“Thanks, Phillies. And thanks to every single one of you who stopped by The Fightins in 2009.”

And thanks to you for this forum. I agree with you about the shift in confidence, and it is a good effing feeling as opposed to the depression and bitterness I experience today.

  • Eman11

I feel proud to have a team like the phils tht go out there and compete everyday. and its only gonna get better. The fuure looks bright within our farm. I STILL LOVE THIS TEAM is a feeling agreed byall fans im sure. Thanks phils.

  • Luis A. Rosado

What a run and what a gritty, fisty, gutsy team. HK must be proud of these guys. Go Phightins from now till the end of time.

  • Jennifer

Right on, Meech! I’m sad that they lost, but, even more than that, I’m sad that I won’t see this team play every day. 97 days is going to seem like an eternity.

And thanks to Meech and the rest of the Fightins’ for all the top-notch Phillies coverage. You guys rock.

  • Here Come Da Judge

only 97 days til cole shows up unprepared again. wish we could have gotten to see jimmy wearing that jacket down broad

  • Mike

If Jayson and Chase had their way, spring training would start on Monday. Fortunately they have three months for recovery.

  • Johnny Hats

I just wanted to say thanks to you guys at TheFightin’s.com, I discovered the site earlier in the season and I found myself checking it several times each day. It was a great way to experience a great season that just came up a little short. Keep up the great work boys! I’ll keep on reading! I also just want to echo everyone else’s thoughts….I still love this team and I’m still damn proud of them. Here’s a good quote that sums it up…..

“It’s been nice and the quality of this team is not diminished because this season won’t end in a party. You just have to remember that the party has lasted two years and that’s pretty good.” – Bob Ford, Philadelphia Inquirer

  • James Fayleez

“Cole, joo need to get jo head out of joo ass.”

  • Leon Black

There is nothing worse in life than hearing Joe Bucks voice when you know your fav team is about to lose the WS a la like the eagles championship game loses…

  • Mr. Bryan

Thanks Phils, and thanks to the Fightins staff this year. You do a great job.

  • http://nerdcast.org dUb-iLL

Great Season, I have a feeling these guys will be back again next year. Hopefully all the pieces can fall into place when it matters. This year just didn’t happen, but it was a lot of fun and was absolutely unforgettable.

Phills in 2010! (That’s the year, not a number of games)

    is it april yet?

  • Minty Fresh

    Thanks Phillies. Thanks Fightins.

    World Series re-match next year?

  • http://www.itsakingthing.com Brian

It’s a King Thing and the Phillies in 2010

  • Chase Mutley

I give all the credit in the world to the Yankees. No bitching about payroll or any of that nonsense. They have a great team and are more than deserving of being World Series Champions. However, at the end of the day, there were 25 guys that are responsible for their success just like there are 25 guys that were responsible for our 2008 Championship. There are 25 guys in New York who have a lot to be proud of this morning. As fans, all we can do is root for is our 25 guys. It’s great when the team you pull for has great success but it’s not what defines you and it’s not what defines a city. Small men define themselves by the success of others. For us fans, this is about entertainment and escape and I can’t think of another team that I would rather pull for. Jimmy, Shane, Ryan, Chase, Werth, Cooch, Hamels, Cliff Lee — I EFFING LOVE THIS TEAM.

At the end of the day, your life is exactly the same if your baseball team wins or loses. Your job is the same, your happiness, your sadness, your wife, your husband, all of it is exactly the same. It’s a great feeling to know that the team you follow, that you invest your time and money into, is a cast of characters like the ones we have and not some unlikable, steroid chomping, purple-lipped mercenaries.

So, in the words, of Tanner Boyle:

“Hey Yankees… you can take your apology and your trophy and shove ‘em straight up your ass!”

    Go Phils!

  • embiscuit

    dear fightins,
you and the phils both won the world series of my heart!

  • Little Jimmy Norton

    Very well written Meech.

The HK patch should be a permanent part of the Phillies uniform, and his jacket and shoes should remain in the dugout for all seasons.

  • jessem

you guys have been great all season, thanks!

  • OD

That quote for Jayson Werth is exactly the reason why this city has embraced this team the way it has. Meech, I love your stuff, but its those guys that make your site possible. They have driven this city to be more passionate fans. Its easy for us to invest insane amounts of time to watching, discussing, and reading about them – not to mention the money we spend to go see them. And because we are so passionate about the team, we need sites like this to keep things light, and to give us our daily Phils fix.

As someone up there said – this team is easy to root for. I’d hate to be a yankees fan, as the pure baseball enthusiast that I am. I could never enjoy it the same way if I looked up and down the line up and saw 15 million dollar player after 15 million dollar player that we plucked off the department store shelf and plugged into a “we actually give a fuck about each other” feel good story.

In the end, this team has given us more than many of us dreamed of after following this organization for decades. Hopefully they continue to value that, and build on it.

I am still an eagles fan… a flyers fan.. a sixers fan… but I could give a shit about what they do this year, for the most part. I will be here, on the fightins site every day, because this is a baseball town now, and I’d rather have spring training baseball and hot stove topics in my life, from a winning organization and a classy group of guys, than watch the sixers try to run a girls basketball offense or the eagles setting us up for another “competitive” season.

  • Capt Murdock

and I love you Meech! Thanks to you for everything you’ve done this year.

    XOXOXOXO
    -Cap’n

  • wiggs

Thanks Meech, definitely echoing my thoughts as well. Nothing to be sorry about for this season, it was a great run. After all of those years of truly bad baseball, it’s amazing to see where this team has risen to. Let’s get ready for another shot next year!

  • Ed Letts

Thank you, Phillies! What a great year. Helluva run. Jayson Werth said it all. 97 days to Spring training. If anyone out there is getting down on this team…do all of us true fans a favor and shut your mouth! Back to back WS showings was a dream come true. Go Phils!!!!!!!!!!

  • Minty Fresh

Please continue to give us daily write ups/stories/articles Fightins! I’m not sure what to do with myself at work now…

  • Kathleen D.

I love this website and I LOVE THE PHILLIES!!!!!!!! We can’t complain too much. This team has done more in the past two years than most teams will do in a lifetime. Thanks for the great post. And Werth is right Spring training isn’t that far away.

  • LEEisGOD

MAN, i dont know what was more heartbreaking…

watching the yankees celebrate…or seeing charlie get interviewed in the club house and it looked like he was crying…unless he just had a runny nose…

    =[

but, our boys weren’t themselves this world series.
they didn’t play like the Phillies we all saw this season

    it was a sad run

but we love you…and see you in Spring Training <3

  • Pasadena_Phan

Awesome Meech, you and the folks @ the Fightin’s are the best!
We love our Phillies win or lose!
    HK & Whitey are smiling…
“We’ll be back next year, Harry”
    “No question, Whitey!”

    RIP HK

  • Brian

RIP Harry (and Whitey)….what fun they would have both had with the last 3 yrs…at least Harry got to see the boys bring one home last year…
    -
Thanks for this website-always fun to follow the team this way…until next year….

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

One thing I know for sure – no one will ever dare say the Yankees only beat the Phillies. We are bearing witness to one damn good team, folks. With the run they’ve put together over the past 3 years, they are without a doubt one of the top 5, if not top 3 teams of this decade (Yanks, Red Sox, Braves…)

meech & Co. – you guys straight up fucking rock. I can’t wait to see the shit you dig up between now and February to get me through the winter, and then into the 2010 season.

Fightins.com Readers – ya’ll are a great bunch. Thanks for adding 20 tons of fun to baseball ’09. Looking forward to getting through the next 97 days with you fine folks.

Here’s to a great 2009 season, and to a 2010 full of great comebacks, countless big blasts, and making the Mets our collective bitch. Cheers, my friends! Cheers!

  • Darcy’s Mole from Morrell Tav

    good job meech

  • http://philaflava.com Philaflava

This team makes me proud and there isn’t a better team to be a fan of. We can pass the buck but the bottom line is we didn’t hit when we needed to. If we don’t hit, we don’t score, period. We can 2nd guess Manuel or blame Lidge. We can curse at Howard for striking out but the reality is save for Lee, Utley and Ruiz the others just didn’t step up the way we needed them.

We have some BIG question marks heading into 2010. Do we rely on Lidge again and pray he fixes his problems? I say we resign Park and Pedro again. Myers if he is willing to take less.

DEFINITELY we need to sign Beltre at 3B. Feliz is a great defensive player and possibly one of the best in the league but he is an offensive liability. We grab Adrian Beltre who is still in his prime and you’re looking at a possible 25-100 guy, which is what most of us thought Feliz might have been after his SF days.

We need another legit SP. Penny, Pineiro and maybe a 1-year deal for Sheets are nice options. A dream would be going after Halladay again. Can you imagine a rotation of Halladay-Lee-Hamels-Happ?

And even though Lidge is on the books my gut tells me he will never recover. What about Soriano as our new closer?

Either way we have to be proud of these guys. We got players locked in for a few more years and we’ll be back next year. We just need to address some issues.

  • KP

I just found this site this year.
like everybody else I’m sad but I’m proud.

    OD said it best:
“I’d hate to be a yankees fan, as the pure baseball enthusiast that I am. I could never enjoy it the same way if I looked up and down the line up and saw 15 million dollar player after 15 million dollar player that we plucked off the department store shelf and plugged into a “we actually give a fuck about each other” feel good story.”

And that’s EXACTLY what I’ll take away from this. WE still love our Phils. Do you think if the Yanks had LOST it would be the same story?
    I highly doubt it.

You can’t buy heart. From players OR fans alike.

I thank the boys for another great run and extending my time watching baseball.
Hopefully we can pick up some bullpen talent in the offseason.

Thanks again for a great site.
    Until next year.

  • Tim

Three division titles, two pennants, and a world series victory over a three-year period when the Phillies went 274-212 in the regular seasons and 20-12 in the post-season. Sure, we’re all disappointed that they lost the series, but anyone who is seriously unhappy or even angry with this team right now needs to reassess their fanhood. Can’t wait for spring training.

  • lovemesomewerth

love this site and love this team.

  • http://twitter.com/JayDashDog Jdashdog

Thanks Meech, Dash, Tug, Chamo, and everybody else. TheFightins is the tits and has helped get me through many a work day. While it’s sad that it’s over, it really was an amazing season. When you put a team this likeable on the field everyday, and back them up with a bunch of fans as passionate as we are, it doesn’t matter what anybody else thinks. It just kind of a weird “what do I do now?” feeling though. I can’t wait til Clearwater, because with this group of guys it seems like the magic will never end.

  • http://www.4daysrest.com 4daysrest.com

    97 days…

  • Joe D

I completely agree with the change in attitude. When Jimmy hit that ball last night there was no doubt in my mind that it was going out and that this team could very well scrap together 2 more runs to tie it. I never would have thought like that during all the down times this team has had in my 26 years of existence. These guys are special and incredibly likable. Gillick and Amaro have done a terrific job of molding a team that can be on the big stage year after year. Only some secondary parts need repairing. Damn what a team.

  • Camille

A great, great team. A great series. Am I bummed? Yes. Did I tell a fellow mom and Yankee fan here in NY to shove it up her a** this morning? Yes. But we are resilient. I cannot wait for April.

  • http://www.yankees.com RR

Well Philadlephia, it wasn’t your year. The Yankees prevailed, as I had hoped and predicted.

Keep your heads held high, Philadelphia. You guys have one hell of a ball club with a great deal of talent. You’ve been to the World Series in two consecutive years, with a .500 winning percentage. I think most teams would be happy to take that; the Yankees included.

The Phillies have a lot of young talent which will surely be there in 2010 and well beyond that. You’ll be contenders for years to come. You’ll iron out some wrinkles in the offseason, make adjustments where needed, and you’ll be right there with the best of them for the foreseeable future.

I will probably be the only “Yankee troll” on this blog to tell you the truth. Out of all the World Series the Yankees have been to in the last 15 years, this one scared us the most. Do you know what it’s like being a Yankee fan and watching Chase Utley and Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth and Raul Ibanez come to the plate? It’s damn scary. Anyone of those guys could have changed the game (or the Series for that matter) with a single swing of the bat This was a World Series for the ages and one of the best that I can remember.

I commend the Phillies fans. You guys are a great group of loyal, dedicated, and knowledgeable fans. As evidenced by the regulars on this site, you guys don’t give up and you don’t quit. Good for you. That’s all your team can ask from you. I’m sure you’ll be there next year too, ready for another run at the postseason.

Last but not least; I know HK meant a lot to your team and your city. He was a classic. Your team didn’t let him down. The Phillies provided him with a win in 2008, and gave him reason to smile in 2009. You know he’s watching down on this team and celebrating their run at and return to the World Series.

    Well done, Philadelphia. Well done.

    Truly Yours,

    RR – A Yankee Fan

  • http://philaflava.com Philaflava

In typical Philly fashion I’d like to say to RR, thanks for the kind words. Now go fuck yourself pal.

  • Nikita Sixx

#31 – “but, our boys weren’t themselves this world series.
they didn’t play like the Phillies we all saw this season”

Interesting you say that. I was just on a political site, one of the writers ran a WS thread to cheer on her beloved Yankees. And a blogger gloated that the “malocchio” s/he put on the Phils did its job.
So there’s another element of cheating that the biatches need – PEDs are not enough, they have to resort to witchcraft.

I guess that’s why the Roid freak had to paint the centaur mural on his wall, he made a deal with some cloven – hooved demon.

    “malocchio” = evil eye

  • LEEisGOD

All of us here on the West Coast who braved the peanut and lime pelting beaners at Dodger Stadium and the Apathetic Yuppies at Petco will be out in force next year.

Go Phillies! We live on to fight another day!

  • Watrick

It sounds like a funeral in here, or the last day of school. Yeah, it’s been fun, but now the hot stoves and rumor mills start up. Who are we getting to fortify the bullpen? Do we need another big arm in the rotation? Come on, let’s start thinking about tomorrow today, and not in that sore loser bitching and moaning kind of way. Last year, when we won, what did the front office do? They looked for weaknesses to address. They didn’t rest on their laurels, and neither should we as fans. Stand up, spit to the side, wipe your mouth, and let’s get going.

  • http://pabaseball.blogspot.com GM-Carson

Excellent post Meech, I share those same thoughts with you. Growing up the Phils sucked the majority of our lives, with only little reprieves every handful of seasons. Now they’re contenders every year and that doesn’t look to change. This group of guys are easy to root for and love. Can’t wait for 2010!

  • will.H

the first picture of this post is all you need to know about their legacy.

the second screen shot of this post is all you need to know about their future.

The Phillies have nothing to be ashamed of. They showed they are better than 27 other teams. (28, if you really want to count the Mets as a baseball team).

See you in 97 days. I’ll be the one with the camera and the mission.

  • Valerie

    Love this team…love this site.

Thanks Meech, Dash, Tug, Chris, HDYSR, DMac, and Chamo. You guys made the season even more enjoyable.

  • Jennjersnap

Just want to chime in and reiterate what everyone has already said. Love my Phillies, love this site, and can’t wait till next year. I don’t even remember how I found The Fightins, but I am so glad I did. It’s funny how a website can bring a smile to your face everyday and I hope you keep it up in the off season! It’s nice to know there are others out there just as phanatical as I am about our team and I love hearing from everybody.

Win or lose, I am and always will be, a proud Phillies fan! 97 days my friends……(gives me time to collect every Birdland shirt for next year)

  • Watrick

I believe, since it is the next day, that’s it’s down to 96.

  • JaysonVooyrhees

Roger Kahn once wrote “You may glory in a team triumphant, but you fall in love with a team in defeat.”

I don’t think this quote has ever been better applied in my life than with this 2009 team. Can’t wait for ’10. :)

  • Erin

That’s why we love them so much. They love to play and it shows. We aren’t Phillies fans because it’s easy…because it hasn’t always been this easy.

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

@RR – I’ve enjoyed your banter throughout this series. You definitely showed some class. See you again down the road. This is a matchup that most definitely could happen again.

  • Pedro Martinez’s smile

    Great baseball.

  • Watrick

Yeah, RR, I concur with my colleagues. Classy dude, informed opinions, and an obvious love for the game. I love talking baseball with people that share those qualities, no matter what team they root for (even my cousins who are Mets fans…. sometimes.)

I’m not totally sure if I’m more bummed that the Phillies lost, or that they aren’t playing anymore. I kind of remember this feeling last year, the day after they won. There was part of me that just like, “Ok, I devoted all this time, energy, and devotion. It paid off. Now what?” I can’t say I feel any different from that sentiment this year.

  • theKrisheim
  • Billig

I know, no matter what, Harry is proud of this team, and believe me guys, he’ll be watching us for a long time come.

    Cheers to Werth’s comment. I can’t wait.

  • j_romes

    The Fightins community rocks.

I love this team, b/c (and this may be corny but I think it’s true) they’ve actually given me those “High Hopes” that Harry always had.

Sure I’m depressed. But if I had to put a finger on my overall feeling, it’s gratitude to this team for, over the past two years, melting the cynical Philly sports fan core and replacing it with belief in success rather than certain failure.

  • KP

RR sounds like I did to all the Rays fans last year..haha.

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

@Watrick – I echo your sentiments exactly. I’m content with how the season ended (as content as I can be, of course), but I just felt like I didn’t want the season to end. Really, from April ’08 until now, it’s been like one long double-season. I wanted it to continue. After the game ended last night, I just wanted to hold on to it, to savor it a little more.

I listened to the whole post game show on 1210 last night, and that seemed like a fitting end. They finished the broadcast with a highlight reel montage that went from April ’09, in through the playoffs and the Series. It was amazing to relive the whole season like that.

Good stuff. Man, I love baseball, and I love this team.

  • http://www.thedarksides.com nqa_victorino

Great season. I love this site, and the Phillies, and I for one can’t wait to see the performance we get next year. Our boys have tasted the sweet victory, and now they’ve tasted the bitter defeat. Let’s hope to hell that they hate that bitter taste, and work their asses off to gargle in the essence of another World Series victory in 2010 to get that nasty shit out of their mouths..

Until then. THANK YOU Fightins! THANK YOU Phillies!

  • http://www.yankees.com RR

I felt bad the way I barnstormed in here and acted like an ass a week or two ago. That’s not how I am and not how I wanted to come off. My apologies to all of you.

Let’s face it, when a team wins the World Series, it suddenly attracts a group of bandwagon fans. I’m sure there will be plenty this winter who buy their first Yankee hat or their first A-Rod jersey. Likewise, I’m sure it happened in Philadelphia last year. I incorrectly assumed that many of you on here fell into that category, simply because your Phillies won in 2008. I admit, I was dead wrong. Over the last few weeks, I have seen your dedication and your love for your team, and I admire it. I read several posts from you guys about how you were there through thick and thin, good and bad teams, etc. That is very admirable. I went to CBP for one of the games, and to be quite honest, I was impressed.

Yes, I do bleed pinstripe blue, but as Watrick stated above, regardless of what hat or jersey you wear, my love for the game comes first, as I suspect it does for many of you.

I would love to see this World Series matchup again in 2010. But before we get to that point, we’ll get to a 3 game series from June 15th – 17th; may the best team win…

  • James Fayleez

Look at all the love RR is getting now. I would like to think that I was the first one to embrace him, but who wants to embrace a Yankees fan?

The better team won and everything he said was pretty much on point – but yes, he should still fuck off.

  • emoyer

there’s no reason to be upset. the phillies have had more success over the past 3 years than 29 other teams. they do it with class and resolve. next year will be so much fun.

  • Ozzie Virgil’s Beard

It truly has been another unforgettable year filled with amazing highs and unsettling lows. No moment was lower than that of April 13th but this Phillies team showed right then and there in Washington D.C. what it meant to be resilient. And I’ll be damned if that resiliency didn’t stretch into the frigid temperatures of Denver in the NLDS, the sizzling heat of Los Angeles in the NLCS, and the chilly autumn nights in November at CBP for the World Series. Yes, this team fell short of the ultimate goal. But the way this team battles night in and night out, it’s difficult not to fall for the approach they take in playing the game the right way. To the Yankees’ credit, they outplayed the Phillies. They made the Phillies (as well as the Twins and Angels) do some things they hadn’t done all year and there’s something to be said for that.

As soon as Shaner grounded out to end the ballgame, I immediately started thinking of the 2010 season and the potential it holds. This team has the makeup to get back again and earn some redemption in the Fall Classic. We are in the midst of the Golden Years for a new generation of Phillies fans and we all need to revel in this time as fans. The promise of the 2010 season is not far off and I personally can’t wait for it to get underway.

  • Brandon

Wearing my phils gear proudly today. Great run, and its only just begun. Can’t wait for next year.

  • j_romes

I second Fayleez. It’s like that scene in Stepbrothers where Will Ferrell tries to hug his brother at the end. Fuck off, RR. But only b/c you seem like a real fan and you’re making it impossible to hate on you. Congrats, good win, we’ll see you next year. And fuck off.

  • bigmyc

Ya know what? I’m pretty competitve and I have invested a lot of energy into this team but how exactly does this “really hurt?”

We did it all last year. What a season. What a Parade. What a party.
Ok, odds were long at repeating this year…who didn’t know this?

After those last two Colorado games and that comeback game for the ages in Philly vs. the Dodgers, we all got our money’s worth once more. Truthfully, I don’t see how a Parade was gonna happen anyway with the way the Fightins’ had to fight through the injury bug and how two of their main men couldn’t find the handle this year.

These guys’ll be back. They’ll be back strong. Kyle Drabek; step right up, son. Nothing to be low about….we got ours and we’ll try again next year. Maybe we get the chance to even it up with New York.

  • Watrick

I don’t get the “fuck off” thing for RR. I look at it this way-we’re just such amazing fans, we’re being congratulated the day after our team lost to their team. What does that say about us? It says we’re pretty damn cool. I can’t say that for every person that calls into sports complaint radio in this town, but as a niche group here at the Fightins, I think it’s something to hang your hat on.

  • DP

    +1 Great job everyone.

One last time until ST. Let’s go Phillies (clap, clap…clap, clap, clap)!

  • jessem

I’m really excited to see what Happ blow up next year.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKpEYMHAaOw Joe Pa

It was a good run, I love this team and this site. With a little luck we will be back in the fall classic for many years to come.

  • Chase Mutley

    @Watrick.

I work in North Jersey and 90% of my co-workers are Yankees fans. They’ve all stopped in my office at one point to say “Good game” or something equally as trite. I’ve responded with “Fuck off” to most of them. They’re still my co-workers and still my friends. It’s just something off-the-cuff to say. Philly sports fans are so gun shy about their reputation that they take the extreme opposite in proving the detractors wrong.

This thread is everything good about Philadelphia sports. No one is wrong for saying “Fuck off” to a Yankees fan. It’s just casual and light hearted. I’m sure no one really wishes bad vibes on the guy and most of us appreciate that he is a cool baseball fan.

  • Sarge loves ribs

    RR ok in my book

  • The Killers Zs

RR- thank you for being so classy and real baseball fan. I sincerely hope you enjoy this magical time.

I am heart-broken that they did not win but I can’t say devastated. When I think back on this entire season and the come from behind wins – twice – in the post season, it was all just so sweet. I love this team.

I went to the Hall of Fame’s Phillies weekend this year and it was full of Phillies fans and the vibe was just so tremendous. It is the same at CBP – which even the nasty Fox announcer tools proclaimed the best ball park in the country.

Thank you for this site which I have been stalking for a year and finally started posting about two months ago. It has been a lifeline.

  • Mand(i)

    @jessem- suck it

@everyone else- thanks for making this season hilarious with all your posts and comments. even if we lost heartbreakers throughout the season we could come here and vent with our fellow fans or get a good laugh. these posts are pretty damn funny and the company is good too. there is no better time to be a philly fan. they are on a great run for this city and for any city for that matter. can’t wait to do it again next year. it’s been fun!

p.s. did anyone read about padilla getting shot in the leg by a shooting instructor in nicaragua?

  • Watrick

@ Chase, I was thinking of it almost as a way of throwing it back in their face that they beat us, and we’re so amazing, they’re almost apologizing for beating us. I understand the fuck off thing, in a way, but I’d rather throw this little tid bit in their face.

  • TC

hey thefightins.com was still my spot for phils related hilarity last offseason. no one died (except for maybe padilla?) ST is right around the corner.

  • Brian

If we did not have last year, this would have been a hell of alot worse, that is for sure…

  • illafifth

“Last but not least; I know HK meant a lot to your team and your city. He was a classic. Your team didn’t let him down. The Phillies provided him with a win in 2008, and gave him reason to smile in 2009. You know he’s watching down on this team and celebrating their run at and return to the World Series.”

Dag, that got me a bit filled up just now! Wish I could have seen Jimmy rocking HK’s gear down Broad this year as well, but the mental image of it is still pretty great. Thanks for the sentiments, RR.

  • A-ROD

I think HHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH brings up a key point. Stop bitchin about “buying” the title. There is not a salary cap in baseball. Maybe your shit-ass owner should pony up some money and invest in some better players, like the kind that can actually win.

Congrats on beating Tampa Bay in 2008. hahahahahahahahaha

Oh, and Maury just called. New York is Pedro’s daddy.

  • http://www.defendbroadstreet.wordpress.com Matt

Hard to be too disappointed after 3 division titles, 2 pennants, and 1 World Series in a 3 year span, but I’m still saddened by the loss. It’s not over though, not by a long shot. We’ve got all our big guys coming back and we can add another piece or two this offseason. Thank you, Phillies. And thank you, Fightins.com. I still got love for ya.

  • Lynniemac

Wasn’t going to come here today – wasn’t going to read the interweb at all, but I did and meech goes and makes me misty. Dammit, you jerk.

Thanks to this site, everyone (minus the trolls) on it, and all my love blog peeps. Ninety-seven days is going to be soooooooooooooooo very long.

    The Yankees couldn’t.

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

Glad to see ya on here, Lynnie. 97 days is a long time, but we’ll all get through this together.

Plus, it’s better than the 127 days Mets fans had to wait….mwahahaha

  • Dan

Well said, meech. And I freaking love me some Jayson Werth. Totally cheered me up.

  • Sherry W

    We’ll be back, you fuckers!

  • Gaze

    @A-Rod
Let’s not act as though the reason Yankee payroll is so high is because the Steinbrenner’s open their own wallets to pay. The Yankees as a club, profit because of their exorbitant ticket prices and their ridiculous television deal with the YES network. If Steinbrenner bought the Royals or the Marlins, he wouldn’t fare nearly as well. His success is directly related to the much higher than average income of people living within the city limits. While you praise the man for buying up every free agent, remember, the ticket money is coming out of your pocket… not his. I love baseball, but if Bill Giles and Dave Montgomery came to me and said “For $2,000 a ticket, we’ll go out and buy you the top 3 free agents,” I’d have to decline.

“Buying a Championship” is completely legal in Major League Baseball and likely will be for some time. Learn to embrace it rather than deny it, Yankees fans… Afterall $800M of your tax dollars and your average $510 lower level ticket are what’s paying for these players.

I did shed a tear last night because I’m a girl but the Phillies had a great season and while it’s disappointing to lose in the WS, they’re an amazing team. I have no doubt they’ll be back next year.

  • OD

@ ARoid… solid drop in there monty.

It’s I spend half the comments today reading about the appreciation of some classy fans, and then there’s you… It would have been fun beating up on you in 2008, unfortunately, you didn’t have a team that was even good enough to finish second place in your division. Don’t know how you can trash the Rays, considering, you didn’t beat them, but… then again I’m sure this discussion has been had on here ad nausea. Leave it to a troll to ruin a good thread.

97 days… 15 weeks… and hopefully a few more steps in the right direction toward a golden age of Philly baseball.

  • Marky from Morrell Tavern

If Cole and Lidge were right we would of won the WS.

  • OD

    @ Marky

there are a ton of whatifs you could play throughout the series. The phillies played, what I thought, was the sloppiest of all their playoff series. From pitch selection, to defensive miscues, it just wasn’t their sharpest series.

But that said, its still about the team that plays best and gets to 4 wins first, and you can’t take that away from the Yanks. You can play the what if game, but in the end, we have the talent on the roster to continue to get there and have another chance to win another title. We just have to hope we play a bit better next year when we get there.

  • Nikita Sixx

#44: “Out of all the World Series the Yankees have been to in the last 15 years, this one scared us the most.”

    No shit.

David Wells told us as much when he wrote a column on how Chase had to be killed.

I’m in the James Fayleez camp, I believe it is the solemn duty of every Philly fan to tell the Yankees to flip off after they beat us.

  • A-ROD

Gaze…ain’t like Philadelphia is some poverty-stricken cowtown. You’re paying Howard $15 million this year and Utley $11 Million this year, jus to name a few.

so you are going to tell me that if Philadelphia could afford A-Rod, they would pass? And what would happen if the phillies got Halladay or the likes? Philly tickets prices would drop? Securing cliff lee and Pedro mid season isn’t exactly a homegrown effort either.

  • Schmitter22

This loss hurts, but I’m still so proud of the team. I have never loved a team the way I love this one.

Thanks for putting together such a great site. I discovered it through the 700 Level and look forward to reading it each day.

To the true, classy Yankees fans, congratulations. Your team executed in areas where the Phillies did not.

As for comment #88…I’m so sick of hearing about how we “only beat the Rays.” Correct me if I’m wrong, but the Rays are in your division, and what were the Yankees doing last October? Watching the series from home. We could only beat the team we had to play, and clearly the Yankees couldn’t top the Rays last year, or it would have been your team in the World Series.

  • YankeesRule

Gaze, So how would you explain all the World Championships before Steinbrenner bought the team? Also, how are my tax dollars (living in NYC) paying for the Yankees payroll. If my next door neighbor pays 25,000 for a Yankee ticket, what does that have to do with me and my taxes? The Yankees Corporation makes money from tickets, food and beverages, paraphernalia, Yes Network and Advertising, old footage, etc. The Yankees spend the proportion of the money they earn to field a team that will continue to make money for them. The Yankees spend more money than anyone and pay penalties for it and have to give a large proportion to league profit sharing. The Yankees earn every dollar because people are willing to spend on them.

As far as trolls go, we have many Philly trolls on NY Dailynews and that’s how I ended up here. I think trolls make it more interesting. Who wants to agree with everyone all the time?

  • YankeesRule

#44: “Out of all the World Series the Yankees have been to in the last 15 years, this one scared us the most.”

Scared who?? Who’s us? I was more scared of the 1996 Braves with Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz. The Yankees were down 2 games to none, won game 3, and were losing 6-0 in game 4. I was more scared of the 2000 Mets also. The Yankees backed in to the playoffs that year and the Mets had Leiter and Hampton. They actually gave the Yankees a better World Series than this Phillies team did. The Yankees won 3 out of the 4 games by 1 run and the last game by 2 runs.

  • YankeesRule

    Heathcliff Slocumb,

By the way, Mets fans have to wait about 330 days. Their season was over in May when Delgado, Beltran, and Reyes went out.

  • A-ROD

wow, the Yanks didn’t make the playoffs in 2008. They’ve missed the playoffs once in the last 15 years. They’ve won the World Series 5 times in that time span. it took you 28 years to win your 2nd world series, and god knows how long to win the first. You went home as first place losers this year. And if the Yanks did make it in 2008, you’d still be looking for your 2nd title. Eat it. I expect to see the Phillies in 2037, 28 years from now. ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

  • A-ROD

YANKEES = 1ST PLACE WORLD CHAMPIONS

    PHILLIES = 1ST PLACE LOSERS

  • Chase Mutley

Jesus, do you faggots ever shut up?

  • Yeah I’m Werth It

Been lurking since April & counting on you to give me out loud laughs & keep me up-to-date on our beloved Phillies. I haven’t posted b/c I guess I never thought I had anything esp clever or enlightening to contribute. But today I felt the need to let you know I ditto everything said here back to April & esp today Meech (& everyone who posted, MINUS the trolls). Wow RR. I’ve lived in NYC for 13 yrs & tho I love the city, it has been my experience that you are an extremely rare Yankees fan. Never met one like you. Hear me, never. Ever. Sincerely. Please note: A-Rod above. That one is allllll too familiar.

You guys kick ass, as does our team. I’m proud of them & the org. My guy Werth said it, 97 days. May seem long now but it’ll be here in no time. The Wild Man may not have the best fashion sense but he speaks truth & patience (normally anyway, lol).

Shout out to Camille, I know your pain. I’ve been suffering the tortures of the damned since before the series began: emails of Phillies in skirts; Phillies w/balls in their faces (yeah they’re humorous folk); fotos of idiotic positions fr the season, etc. Today newspapers stuck on doors, Yankees clothing & cakes (fine – eat hearty & grow beastial); & general mouthiness. I’ve maintained thru it all until sadly today (around 1:15) I sank low . . . I ground my teeth to one guy,”Kiss my ass – 27 times, you monstrously overpaid, hormone addled, razor blade & car shill.” He laughed, I guess he can.

Later a co-worker asked why I disliked the Yankees: I deliberately watched post game to see how long it would take just one of the Yankees to mention that they even played another team for this World Series. It’s the class, sportsman thing to do. I waited until 1:10am and FINALLY Mariano Rivera uttered one brief sentence about the Phillies. He was the only one. I turned off the tv & couldn’t sleep.

As I remember last yr, the minute the mic was in front of Charlie Manuel on the field he said (obv I’m paraphrasing) “I’d like to congratulate the Tampa Bay Rays for a great series,” and he went further. He’s a man of class & he’s taught that team well. They all spoke that way that night.

I’m adopting a new ‘tude toward the minions of The Evil Empire in my office, “Only 96 days until spring training. Matsui’s contract is up. Your line-up averaged .202 in the series. See ya.”

I’m not sad or down b/c of The Fightins, so thanks. Keep the faith guys.

  • Yeah I’m Werth It

Chase I can answer that. No. They NEVER shut up.

    Never.

    Ever.

  • http://www.thedarksides.com nqa_victorino

Here it comes… I was waiting for the ass-hat wankees fanes to hit the site and gloat like a bunch of FUCK faces… Let’s talk about how great we are… 27 World Series. UGGH! What a joke. No passion. The majority of you assholes are completely numb to any of the thrill that comes will loving a team, cause you don’t really love the Yankees, you love the feeling of power that routing for a team that has been a perennial powerhouse year in and year out…

I say FUCK that. Most of you dicks hardly know baseball, you are in it to gloat about how many series you’ve won.

Well our Phils haven’t won many series. And our Phillies have over 10,000 losses. And we route for them harder every year, cause we love the idea that they play for us. That is something that you will NEVER understand, and that a tough world series loss can never take away from us!

Fuck You (A-ROD), Fuck You (YankeesRule), Fuck You (Any Other Wankees fan on this board), You’re Cool (RR). I’m out!

  • Luis A. Rosado

Wore my Phils shit today and got mocked for it. Fuck NY and the Phils are a real team, not a collection of overpaid mercenaries who disgrace the game of baseball. Lastly, I hope city hall burns to the ground and I hope there are massive riots at the Yankee parade. I can’t wait till I get out of this shithole of a city. Go Phils.

  • Gaze

Philadelphians on average make far less money than New Yorkers. I don’t think there’s any disputing that. The Yankees can afford free agents because their fans can afford the ticket prices that support the salaries of such free agents. It’s cyclical. The luxury tax and revenue sharing dollars they lose are minimal in terms of their gross revenue overseas (a market they exist in primarily because they can afford high priced overseas players) and domestic.

As for the stadium deal, look into it and you’ll see that The Yankees held the city and state of New York over a barrell on not only up-front capital, but also tax rights, energy costs, parking rights, transportation infrastructure costs, percentages of ticket and food revenue, etc. A deal like that wouldn’t go down in any other city in the world. It allowed the Yankees to maintain payroll flexibility despite taking on what should have been a massive expense. Is there anything wrong with that? No, I wish Philadelphia could have pulled it off! But let’s call a spade a spade.

The problem isn’t with the Yankees, but rather Major League Baseball. The Yankees are well within their right to buy up every free agent that hits the market. The problem is that it creates a cycle that perpetuates itself. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer. A weak economy only exasperates the problem. With the current system in place, as years go by you will see fewer and fewer small market teams able to sustain long term success. A flash in the pan from the Marlins or the Rockies will happen once every few years, but it will blow up shortly afterward because they cannot afford the rising value of the talent they create. Years ago, the NFL owners sat down and agreed upon a salary cap because it created a more competitive atmosphere. MLB has made no such attempt.

This is an opinion I have regardless of who the Yankees beat. It’s a conversation I have with Yankee fan friends quite frequently. I’d hate to think that when Curt Flood filed a lawsuit in 1970 thus creating free agency, that this is what he had in mind for baseball.

  • Luis A. Rosado

    @nqa_victorino

    Ditto

  • Harry Kalas Murder Conspiracy Theory

Nights are gonna suck now with no Phils games. This is such a fun team to watch. These past couple years have been amazing, not to mention, the many thrills they’ve given us during this postseason.

See your crazy asses in March. Don’t forget we have some spring training fireworks between the Phils and Yanks coming up. People will be getting beaned, no questions asked.

  • Alexander

The problem I have with the Yankees is not their spending habits. They have the money, go for it. All teams wish they could, and some are close to it. The Phils are just as likely to buy a player or two, right? The real issue is the way the Yankees approach the process, which is like a vicious shopping spree on a rampage, leaving nothing behind for any other team. This is in fact the very reason they haven’t won a championship in several years; you can’t create chemistry by blindly buying the best.

As Phils phans, we should be extremely proud not only of our team but of the front office that has emerged over the past 10 years. We are smart about our moves, and we look for players that can mix well with the intangible bond that already exists. This is what makes the Phillies a special team, one to be admired.

  • YankeesRule

Hahahah “Phils are a real team and not a collection of overpaid mercenaries” The Phillies team salary is 111 million. Did you mention that when you beat the Colorado Rockies (72 million). How have the Yankees disgraced baseball?

Do New Yorkers ever shut up? Are you serious? A Philadelphia fan (aka booed Mike Schmidt, Santa Claus) asking if Yankee fans shut up.

What fireworks will there be in Spring Training? The “classy” Phillies beaned A-Rod 4 times. Yankees hit poor little Victorino’s finger on a bunt attempt that should have been called a strike.

  • Lynniemac

Don’t fans of a certain team have…oh, I don’t know…some kind of win they should be off celebrating?

  • YankeesRule

By the way, the Yankees share a division with the Red Sox, which basically means, the Yankees are willing (as are the Red Sox) to spend money just so the other one can’t get that guy. Mark Texeira wasn’t even in the Yankees plans. Boston was going to get him and he just fell into the Yankees laps.
Alexander, oh and they just won a championship yesterday with that “blind” buying. They’ve had the basically the same players (except for Texeira), it was just in the playoffs those players were batting .100 with no rbi’s. This year they hit and tomorrow is the parade.

  • A-ROD

    Wow, just wow.

I think Yankee fans need to get over themselves. Winning 27 WS, big deal.
I’ll take my 2 WS and be damn glad about that.
Not trashing other teams/fans. Waste of life.

  • YankeesRule

    A-Rod, lol!!!! How you doinnnn!

  • Phil ‘er up

Can’t wait to take this WS loss out on that other team from NY next year. What a year for the phils! For some reason, one of my best memories is Vic getting thrown out of that game against the Marlins from the outfield. Predictions for our “other” sports teams between now and opening day ’10:

Eagles: Will be coming off another underachieving 10-6 season, winning a wild-card game and getting smoked again by the Saints in the divisionals. Andy Reid will take the blame for not having his team ready. If they get lucky they’ll lose another NFC champ game.

Flyers: Will be in a dog fight with the Capitols for the third seed in the upcoming playoffs, where we will eventually bow down the Pengins yet again. The Pengins are our daddy.

Sixers: Spiffy new (old?) uniforms with the same old (new?) result…a 6/7 seed headed into the playoffs for a date with LeShaq. They will inspire us with their effort, but fall short.

Boy I sound like a typical philly fan. Have I learned nothing from our Fightins? Let me revise this based on the new feelin the phils have instilled in me:

    Eagles: SUPER BOWL FUCKING CHAMPIONS

Flyers: #1 seed preparing to become STANLEY CUP FUCKING CHAMPIONS

    Sixers: #1 seed and…sorry. I’m just laughing too hard…

  • YankeesRule

Katherine, it’s not about the 27 world championships, it’s about being the DEFENDING CHAMPIONS!!! How you doinnnn

  • jabas mom in jail

i would like to agree with whoever made the comment about the yanks not thanking the phils for anything or congratulating them on a terrific ws. That shows absolutely no class from an organization which basically(hard for me to say) the face of baseball. this team is so much fun to watch and be a part of. it brought a city together for the 2nd straight year and put philadelphia back on the map. My hats go off to the yank fans i guess, except for the ones who are from new jersy and still tell everyone there from new york. i realize you need a team to root for but come on man be honest when someone asks you where your from be proud of the north dirty jerz!!!!!

  • Katherine

    lol Phil ‘er up !

  • Katherine

Yeah, well the Yankees should be honored to have played the DEFENDING CHAMPIONS of 2008.

  • A-ROD

i hate shane victornio. i want to slap the face off of his head. his stupid shit-eating smirk, his stupid accent, his attitude, his short, tiny little legs. nothing made me happier to see him hit into the game ending play last night. f him.

  • YankeesRule

Phil’er, up: you guys have been getting destroyed by the Mets too the last few years, who are you lying to??? You beat up on the minor league mets last year and the both years before it was the Nats and Marlins that made the Mets lose. Don’t you think after this season and world series that the Mets are going break the bank this year?

  • EEB

I have not been able to bring myself to watch ESPN or go to any other sports – related websites today, but I HAD to come to the fightins, because I knew you were all feeling the same way I am. And I was right. We LOVE our team, we got outplayed by the Yankees (regardless of how much anyone was paid), and we can’t wait for next season. Meanwhile, how are we going to entertain ourselves for the next 96 days…

@Lynniemac I was wondering the same thing…you beat us. Congrats. Go celebrate and enjoy it. The last thing I wanted to do last year was get all up in a Ray’s fan’s face. Just saying.

  • Gaze

Last 3 yearscombined, Phillies record versus Mets: 31-23. Hardly getting destroyed. Check your facts.

  • Katherine

If you can say you hate Shane Victorino than I can say I hate A-Rod. Which I do. A lot.

But really now everyone who CARES? Can’t we all just coexist. It’s baseball, its supposed to be something good.

  • YankeesRule

Gaze, get rid of this season because you can’t be serious including that. Why don’t you include 2006 then too? Very selective on your part.

  • A-ROD

i guess none of you saw CC Sabathia, Jorge Posada, Joe Girardi, Andy Pettitte, Jerry Hairston Jr or Derek Jeter congratulate the Phillies? Guess what…post game interviews took place on more than one station; including YES Network, MLB Network, Fox NY, and others. Just because the local Fox affiliate in Philadelphia doesn’t show these comments being made, it doesn’t mean they weren’t said.

and really, do you have nothing better to bitch about? that’s really sad and pathetic.

  • A-ROD

    I’m doinnnnn good YankeesRule.

    How you doinnnnnnn?

    Hey, Philly, how you doinnnnnn?

Guess your HIGH HOPES are LONG GONE, huh? hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  • Gaze

You said “last few years.” I assumed you were referring to the year when the Phillies made the playoffs and said that the Phillies did nothing to help themselves versus the Mets. Throwing out 2009, it’s 19-17. Still a winning record. Adding in 2006, it’s 27-28. Still not “getting destroyed.” Again, check your facts.

  • Katherine

I don’t know who is bitching hear because I certainly have nothing to bitch about. At least nothing related to this website.

  • Cole’s taking a nap

Wow, I guess Yankee fans are so obnoxious and disgusting that they can’t even stand each other. Or else they wouldn’t be coming in here to talk to Phillies fans when they should be enjoying a championship with fellow fans..?

  • YankeesRule

    Gaze, if you want to include 2006 it’s 28-26 Mets. Take out 2006 and 2009 and it’s Phillies 12-6 in 2007 and Met’s 11-7 in 2008.

  • YankeesRule

Cole, I came here because your fellow Philly fans have been coming to NY Dailynews for years now.

  • YankeesRule

RockDog, I haven’t even gloated. I’m just responding to what some of these guys are saying about the Yankees. Stop coming here to thank the Phillies fans. They are calling A-Rod Aroid and Jeter the biggest loser, etc. etc. Please! We’re all sports fans and none of what I say is personal. It’s called a pasttime for a reason. You think I go home and hope Phillie players die or fans die??? Now that’s sick.

137: “i guess, except for the ones who are from new jersey and still tell everyone they’re from New York.”
    spot on.

If you’re not from the 5 boroughs, REAL NYers think you’re just a puke. In their minds, NNJ-ites are as much NYers as we are.

that is a delicious, irrefutable irony. And a real joy to my heart. Thank you joba’s mom in jail, for bringing a smile to my lips today.

  • Katherine

If you feel as if you haven’t gloated…why must you point out you haven’t gloated…?

So who’s all going to Opening Day 2010 at Nationals Park? My friend and I will be there.

Does this hurt? Yes, it does. Today I had the unfortunate task of having to walk around Rowan University and see Yankees jerseys, shirts, jackets and hats all over campus (yes, some people displayed their Phillies red loud and proud). It was a disgusting site. But there is no reason whatsoever to be pessimistic, other than not preparing ourselves for a Game 7 tonight. This team is all coming back, with the exception of a few, most likely Pedro and Brett. I disagree with a lot of people about Feliz. He’s solid defensively and I’ll tolerate his .260 batting average for his glove any day of the week.

What this team should do is make a run at Mark Loretta. He can fill in for Utley and Feliz if, God forbid, got hurt. You need to get some guys who can come off the bench and get you a hit. That’s what hurt them this year. You also need another starter. Your rotation for next year is Lee, Hamels, Blanton and Happ. A fifth starter would be nice. I like Myers and would have no problem bringing him back but I don’t see that happening. Another arm for the bullpen would be another nice addition.

All in all, there’s a lot to look forward to next year. A whole year with Lee, Hamels and Lidge back to their old selves and a bolstered up bench means this team should run with the NL East and NL with relative ease.

  • Cole’s taking a nap

YankeesRule – Just make sure nothing happens to our trophy while you guys hang on to it for us. We’ll be right back and we don’t want it all messed up. Thanks.

  • YankeesRule

Nikita. who the fuck are you talking about? It’s an IP ADDRESS you stupid fucks. It doesn’t mean you live there. A lot of NYC people drive to Jersey to work, just like you drive to Cherry Hill and vice-versa. You guys must have creamed your pants with that one. Get a napkin and dry yourselves off. Do I have to go home tonight and type something from my house??? Has it really gotten to this point.

  • nqa_victorino

Well at least we all learned that there are very, very few good sports \ good baseball fans in NY. Everyone criticizes Philly for being unruly, and the epitome of bad form.

I think that the majority of our fans in Philly really try our best to not adhere to the stereotypes that get thrown onto our proud sports town by the national media.

Oh there are a few bad eggs in Philly, but I must say that they aren’t posting to this blog. It appears that the same decorum can not be expected from the majority of the neaderthals that reside a little bit north of us.

We are all passionate about our teams and our baseball. I have to say that New York really dissapointed me during this series. The cheap jabs by the Post (Ahem… TABLOID). And the majority of the posts to this blog by Wankees fans was really idiotic.

I always though New York meant culture, and that it was supposedly the best city on Earth.

Gotta say… I’m not feeling that. Fuck New York, and all the morons that reside there.

Great post man. In a lot of ways this team meant more to me than the 08 squad. This core group of Phillies are resilient and only get better and more mature, take a look at 07 making the playoffs then in 08 they win the World Series and in 09 they take on the corporate conglomerate that is the Yankees and I’ll be goddamed if they don’t come out with something to prove in 2010. Not to slight the 08 Ray’s but this years AL representative was a much, much tougher opponent, and for the most part it was a grudge match. I can’t wait for next year man. Oh and as for my 09 wishlist:

    1. resign Scott Eyre
    2. Bench improvements
    3. Solid #2 OR a dedicated Cole Hamels (I still have faith in him)
    4. A stronger bat from 3B (Garret Atkins-ish)
    5. If reasonable bring Chan Ho back

  • YankeesRule

Katherine, Rockdog was apologizing for the Yankee fans that are gloating. I’m not one of them. I’m actually in the middle of proving my residency right now. It turns out that people from New Jersey can’t be Yankee fans. Those people have to skip the season because they don’t have a team. So all the people that moved from the Bronx to Rockland Cty, NY or all the Staten Islanders that moved to Marlboro, NJ have to stop watching baseball.

  • A-ROD

the exact reason i’m here is because you loser philadelphia fans come to our sites and do the same shit. go to the more popular yankee blogs and newspaper sites and read the dumbass comments that you people leave there.

  • Gaze

To copy from the last thread…
I have a few immediate post season thoughts:

    1. Pass on Feliz. Adrian Beltre is a free agent and chances are Garrett Atkins will be waived in lieu of being paid arbitration dollars. Look at one of them as an equal on defense, but way more upside at the plate.

    2. Sign Myers to an incentive laden deal on the cheap. Given the high price of the other options out there, throwing a few dollars at Myers and seeing if they stick to the wall is a very reasonable idea. He can work as either a starter or reliever.

    3. Dump Cairo, Bruntlett, Dobbs, and Stairs and start over. We need a potential every day infielder capable of actually getting a hit off the bench, and we need a 4/5th outfielder that can double as a pinch runner. Utility guys like Mark DeRosa and Chone Figgins come to mind. Marco Scutaro and Jerry Hairston Jr. are multi position options as well.

    4. Have Drabek groomed for a midseason call up. I can deal with a piecemeal rotation for the first few months next year using Myers, Moyer, Kendrick, Happ, Blanton, Hamels, and Lee but an injury or two makes a scary situation out of them. Have Drabek prepared for a late season push.

    5. Rebuild the bullpen. Oddly enough, the only guy that deserves to stay is the guy that might retire. Chan Ho Park may have priced himself out of town. Durbin & Condrey are at the end of their ropes. I’d like to see more opportunity given to young, hard throwing talent. Give more opportunity to guys like Escalona, Mathieson, and Savery to build a bullpen from within. Madson and Lidge remain and cross your fingers that the “every other year” streak Lidge has established holds true.

    6. Have a viable backup plan to Ruiz. Bako, Coste, and Hoover are not reliable options. Good teams mix and match catchers with offensive power with defensive specialists depending on matchups. Ruiz has to play too many games behind the plate because of our lack of other options. Migual Olivo should remain affordable if his option isn’t picked up.

    7. Michael Taylor or Dominic Brown need to be ready for the majors as a backup plan to Raul Ibanez. Assuming Ibanez has surgery in the offseason, his future is a complete shot in the dark. Considering the money we have committed to him, a free agent backup plan isn’t a viable option. But a .300 hitter who has some power is exactly what this team needs in the outfield and I think they have two potential candidates knocking on the doorstep.

  • jabas mom in jail

no problem nikkitta. but you know what, new york can take those fans. i relaize a lot of south jersy does root for philadelphia sports but than again when you ask them where their from they say NEW JERSY not philadelphia. thats where my argument stems from. no one thinks youre cooler and richer and are a baddass if u say your from new york. If you wanna be a new yorker so bad, become jewish and blow JZ theres nothing to it…..

  • Katherine

YankeesRule, I wouldn’t care if someone in Zimbabwe is a fan of whoever. Location doesn’t matter to me. I don’t want to fight over something idiotic. That’s stupid. I don’t want to fight at all. It’s unnecessary.

  • Cole’s taking a nap

Well I can only speak for myself, but I have never sought out a Yankees (or any other team for that matter) blog and instantly jumped right in and began talking smack. And I’m guessing its a safe bet to say the majority of us on here have never done that or even understood why others do. So save it.

  • Scott Erye deserves a cold beer

phils have to improve the bench and bullpen

  • Matt

Gaze I agree with you on a lot of your points, but I think Dobbs is important and still has life in his bat. I was thinking of going after someone along the Gary Sheffield-ish lines for a power bat/DH. Because if their was one thing this world series made glaringly obvious, is the lack of DH-edness the Phillies had. Also solid point about a backup to Ruiz, this is where we miss Marson but enjoy having Cliff pitch for us. I’m on board with Myers on the cheap

  • YankeesRule

nqa_victorino, The NY Post is the worst “newspaper” in America. Totally classless… Let me just say now. Your fuckin team is awesome! Utley owned CC and AJ. Werth is nasty, and every hustles their asses off. You have a shut down and I mean SHUT DOWN starter and JA Happ should have started. The Yankees won, they have 4 months to be happy and then it get’s taken away and everyone is the same again.

  • http://www.mets.com Hamels Camels

Face it boys; when the Yanks clinched, the city of Philadlephia was excited. Why? Because we wanted to play the best to prove we were the best. It was our shot to go through the Yankees and say “Fuck You” to the rest of the world. We failed. A lot of you are saying you’re proud of the team, and so on. I’m not. We lost the World Series. What the hell are you proud about? Do you know why the Yankees are so successful? Because they don’t settle for 2nd place, and what are we doing here? Settling for 2nd best. I’m pissed, upset, let down and generally frustrated.

Howard was the biggest disappointment in post season history. Seriously. Who has sucked more than him in the history of the postseason? I’m not proud of this clown, he didn’t do shit for Philly when it counted the most. And Hamels? F him. And Lidge? F him too. We should adopt the “nothing less than the best” philosophy that NY carries.

  • YankeesRule

Hamels Camels, exactly. You’ll never hear a Yankee or Met fan say well I’m proud of my team even if they lost. So what if they choked in the 2004 ALCS or 2007,2008 NL Division at least they played hard. NEVER EVER EVER! Those kinds of things should only be said to Little league kids or if you live in Minnesota of somewhere like that.

Just because the local Fox affiliate in Philadelphia doesn’t show these comments being made, it doesn’t mean they weren’t said. ”

A-Roid I LIVE in NYC. I watched those Yankee shill stations post-game. Didn’t see anyone but Rivera say a single syllable about the Phillies. Maybe that’s b/c I was flicking around to try and find someone – anyone, incl the esteemed Yankee’s mngr who didn’t say anything about the opposing team while he was on the field. It was as if the Yankees stood on two diff fields in two diff cities and played with themselves and then got to dance around in champagne for tv cameras. Kinda pervy really.

Top 10 highlights of the year:

    10. I still love our 1st win of the season. Scoring 4 runs on WALKS! Phils 12, Braves 11. Shoulda known from the start it was going to be a crazy season.

    9. OK…the dad catching the foul ball and it giving to his daughter was cool. Whatever happened to that ball?

    8. If Bruntlett had even batted .190 for the year, his triple play would have been at least #5. Alas it is here along with his .171.

    7. Fuck Riccardi. I take that back…can’t kick a man when he is down (and out). Do they give unemployment in Canada? Plus we got Clifton P. Lee.

    6. PEDRO! Even though the yanks are his daddy, we own him now. It was a great move by Ruben even though he stumbled a bit in the ws clincher.

    5. NL East 3 peat!

    4. Getting revenge on the Rocks. They were definitely better then the Dodgers.

    3. Insert Cliff Lee highlight here

    2. J-Roll NCLS game 4 walk-off double. Still get chills!

    1. National League *freaking champions (*fucking is reserved for taking it all).

Hamels Camels is a douche, you can be disappointed they lost and mad and upset but the Yankees were a better team. No, he is an ass rocket. If your city rallies around a team that makes it to the world series AGAIN a year after winning the whole damn thing and you aren’t proud of the teams and city’s accomplishments you might as well be a Yankees fan, because if all you want to do is root for a winner that can buy pieces and forgo any of the chemistry and positive attitudes this club and the people on it and around it create, you are quite simply a fucktard

I’m sooo proud of the Phillies!!! Of course, I’m disappointed they lost, but the Yankees played better. I ‘m more proud than upset.

What a great season, boys. Losing Harry Kalas was tough, but they played their hearts out everyday making the season incredible. Tons of great wins during the regular season, and I really enjoyed the postseason this year.

If you asked me 6-7 years ago if I thought the Phillies would be in back-to-back World Series, I would have thought that you were crazy. But those teams in the late 90s/early 00s made me appreciate this 2009 team so much more. This may sound crazy, but I would NEVER trade those days in the 90s/early 00s for 27 rings! Never. That’s what makes me a Phillies fan.

I’m just upset that baseball season is over, but I’m so proud of the Phightins! I can not wait for next season, and we’ll see what the future has to bring! GO PHILS!

Oh, and one more thing, Phillies fans: The Yankees may be the World Champions this year, but they will never be the wFc’s! Let’s get to 28 before NY does!!! :-)

Several times I got the “up and down, hostility” look and promptly responded to each with “the fuck you lookin’ at?” or “can i fuckin’ help ya with somethin’” – to which there was no response and several “turn and walk away.”

I was alone, and I’m not a particularly intimidating individual. They all try to act tough, but it’s a total front.

    Yankees Rule -

you know many of us Philadelphians have roots in NYC – I had a dear uncle in the Bronx and my granddad lived in Ozone Park back in the day before he made his way to Philly. I am happy for my friends who are Yankee fans – some of them are actually nice people!

Enjoy your day tomorrow, I’m sincere about that.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=193600171&ref=profile Ray

    A-Rod,

It’s consider good sportsmanship to at least acknowledge the other team after you beat them. Do hockey players have to line-up and shake hands after a series? No. But it’s the classy and right thing to do. After all, the Phillies were the defending champs and they did deserve a little credit from the current ones for getting as far as they did. All Girardi and his boys had to say was that the Phils had a great year and played a great series. That’s it. Simple. To the point.

Respect is a two way street. You complained earlier about how Phillies fans go to Yankees blogs and sites and leave comments there, so that’s why you came here. Good job contradicting yourself there. I hope you enjoy your parade tomorrow.

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

@YankeesRule – For the record, my anecdote about Yankee Stadium was all the way up in the left field nose bleeds in the old park. These folks I’m talking about looked like some hard-nosed badasses, but totally backed down. Definitely not the guys sitting in the swank seats with loads of cash. I really thought I was going to end up in a fight but didn’t even come close.

That being said, good day to you sir. I look forward to the banter that will accompany our teams’ matchups for years to come.

And, oh eyah, fuck off. That’s what I’m supposed to say, right?

    ;)

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

For what it’s worth, and from what I can tell in a quarter of an inch, Katherine does look pretty hot. Word up to hotties hittin’ up the Fightins. Bring your friends, K.

  • http://www.majorleaguejerk.com Gonzo

Katherine ain’t got shit on me.

    /Gabrielle

  • Katherine

    Hahahaha. Yikes.

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

This has the potential to turn into the most interesting thread ever, methinks.

  • Katherine

    It’s possible.

  • KP

    LOL. Good stuff.

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

    Hey Katherine……How you doin’, eh?

  • KP

HAHAHA Yankees rules makes his departure. And another one slides on in…..

  • Katherine

LOL. I’m doin’ quite well, despite last night.

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

KP – I hear Katherine only goes for Phils fans.

Katherine – I can think of a few ways to put that in the past…

(that was simply left too wide open)

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

P.S. – Katherine clearly knows she’s hot. No way you put an avatar pic up on here otherwise.

Just like Gonzo wouldn’t have the pic if he didn’t love crazy fist pump guy.

    (Don’t ever change that, G)

  • Katherine

It really was left too open. And I suppose I do only go for Phils fans. And haha vanity.

  • KP

LOL nothing wrong with vanity. And everybody knows girls in glasses rock.
(No I’m not hitting on you too. I’m a girl. With glasses.) LOL

  • KP

I’m sure a lot of you are much younger then me. But I recall the last world series lost. And how DEVISTATING it was to lose THAT WAY.
    Two words.
    Wild.
    Thing.

I handled this well compared to that one.

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

Of course, by putting it in the past, I simply meant watching the ’08 WS DVD (with Heathcliff). Totally innocent in every way…

  • Katherine

Agreed about the girls with glasses! :)

  • Katherine

Ah, well the ’08 WS DVD could be fun.

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

I remember ’93, KP. That sucked way more than this.

Of course, we didn’t win the Series in ’92, which might have changed things. And I also think this one stung a little less because we were slowly confronted with the idea that it might not happen. Not shot in the heart with an improbable walkoff.

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

    psst…Heathcliff has the ’08 WS DVD…

  • Katherine

    Hmmmmmm, that’s good, because I don’t.

  • KP

Hell yeah it did. I was only 13. I remember that crack of the bat like it was a min ago. I was SURE in 08′ something would jinx us. It’s Philly. It almost HAD TO.
    Then it didn’t.

So this year I went in overconfident I think. Even yesterday I STILL was convinced something would happen.
Even though the logical part of me knew the Yankees would win. And living WITH a Yankees fan I kept getting htis drilled into me every two seconds.

I knew first inning when it took Pedro an hour to throw one very slow “fastball” that it was over.

  • j_romes

What. In the hell. Is going on in here? Careful, if Katherine and Heathcliff hook up, meech will want to start charging for this site.

What the hell is going on in here? I left a simple message earlier in the day for the fine fans of the Phillies (about baseball for Godsake), and now this looks like match.com or some shit.

    You bros better be careful. Maybe this Katherine woman is a Finklestein. Besides, she isn’t interested in any of you. This woman wants a Yankee fan who has been accepted by the Phillies fans. {enter: me}

Alright look, I was going to sit here and try to chime in on some of the points here made by both sides, but it’s not worth it. Some of you have accepted me, and some of you have told me to fuck off. For those of you who have accepted me, thank you. For those of you who have told me to fuck off, don’t read my posts and it will be just as good.

I see the company I have and I understand why I am guilty by association. Believe me, I get it. I’ve been to Yankee Stadium hundreds of times in my life and I know first hand that some of us are dicks. But on the other hand, a lot of us are intelligent, dedicated fans, just like all of you. Likewise, not everyone in Philadelphia throws crutches at Mark Grace and/or boos santa, right? Every crowd has a bad apple or two.

  • Katherine

lolol I was compared to Finklestein ew. :/

I’m not into that sort of thing, RR.

  • brunt force trauma

Stating the obvious here, but this was definitely a painful and disappointing end to a great season. We had the team we wanted opposing us and the chance for a repeat that would make a big statement, but things just didn’t come together when we needed them to. It was a fantastic season regardless, being able to leave no doubts about who is the powerhouse in the NL and being able to move forward with a team that looks only capable of getting better. We started off this season with a team that was destined to play great, and the front office made some amazing moves during the season to make us that much better.

To reflect on the Series a little more, I think it’s important not to brush off the Yankees now by complaining about their payroll, or whatever we can say to try and make it hurt a little less. This past week, the Yankees should have hated us and we should have hated them (let’s be honest, before this week I would say I hated them). But let’s face it, no matter how much you’re paying a group of guys, they’re going to have to fight to deliver on the field, and the Yankees did just that. And they did it better than we did, which is why they will be the defending champions next year. A few clutch hits going our way instead of theirs, or a few different decisions being made along the way and things might have been different, but the Yankees were the better team in this series and we have to swallow that.

So again, looking ahead, there seems no logical reason to think the Phillies won’t be contenders year in and year out for the immediate future. Some new faces that arrived here (Cliff Lee), we’ll cross our fingers and hope we can lock up for a few years more in this championship-caliber window. Pedro Martinez seems unlikely to be brought back, but despite a poor Game 6 outing being fresh in my mind, and despite the fact that I didn’t approve of the decision to bring him here in the first place, he proved me wrong. He gave this team a remarkable effort and wherever he may try and continue his career, I want him to be successful. As for the rest of this team, we all know that things will look almost entirely the same next year, and with a bad taste in their mouths to finally sour their recent fortunes, I fully expect them to come back hungrier and see a few of our struggling players light up once again.

There’s a lot more I could say about this team right now, but this overly long and somewhat disjointed “comment” will have to do for now.

  • BigMiles

Remember when someone above was like what is going to happen when the regulars show up and they are like wtf?

Welll….wtf. I guess at this point we should just add a partner site called thefistins.com for those looking for a hookup.

  • http://www.yankees.com RR

One final thought on the ’09 Phillies. I loved this team and they way they played. They didn’t lose for lack of trying, the Yankees just got the big hits and the big outs. I guess I thank them because they were a team that I expected to win instead of being a team I prayed didn’t lose. Even when they were down 4 in game 6, I still believed they had a chance. It was fun and it didn’t work out this year. Hopefully with a few additions and subtractions (I’m looking at you Eric Bruntlett), they’ll be right back in the WS next year. The Phils also need solid years from Cole Hamels and Brad Lidge, which was key to the championship in ’08.

And yeah, this site has been amazing the last couple of years. It just makes me so excited for ’10.

Funny how it was Cole Hamels that said he wanted to go down that parade “Year after year, after year.” And yet, if Cole showed up, maybe that could have happened…

  • http://www.superfantabulousblog.blogspot.com maria
  • Luis A. Rosado

    @Maria

    thanks

  • will.H

note to WIP, ban philly fans too. its almost a guilty pleasure to listen in from time to time. they’re such morons, especially in the morning. same assholes who would call in pre-WFC and say “chaaarie is dumb, fiiire him he doesnt know how to coach fiiire him.” quiet, middle aged grumpy dude.

  • Luis A. Rosado

what can you do with callers?

  • AK

Thank God the Yankees are completely off the front pages of both si.com and espn.com now…

  • http://www.thefightins.com meech.one

What the fuck happened here? I leave you kids alone for ONE NIGHT, and this is what goes on.

It’s not worth reading all that, right?

  • Kruks left nut

BE proud we will be back!finding this site was 2nd only to world series !just remember on thing,Cliff Lee does not put his dog in a back pack!!! COT DAM!!

  • DrukenDykstra

Are they finally going to let Harry have his suit back?

  • Katherine

I appear and the site goes to hell, sorry! o_o

  • KP

I can sum it up for you so you dont’ have to read it.
Everybody gets hot and heavy over a 4X4 avatar.
Everybody makes an attempt at hitting on Katherine.
    H wins.
    E mail is exchanged.
I instigate said 100 or so comments.
I made an attempt at talking about baseball comapring this loss to the 93′ loss which in my opinion was MUCH more painful.
Katherine didn’t remember that. She was probaby still in utero.
    I felt old.
    Shed a few tears.
And talk went back to e mail.
    End of story.

  • Minty Fresh

4X4 emo avatars are so hot right now.

  • D. Whitmore

dear katherine. facebook me. gotta see more than the .5x.5 picture

    /not wheeler’d but creeper’d

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

Your summary is only slightly off, KP. Ms. Katherine hath not sent me a message. Though I do still feel like a winner, so long as she didn’t go for the Yankees dude. It’s like WS vengeance, sort of…

I also think I was right when I said this has the potential to become one of the funnest threads on here (at least for me it has been).

My apologies, Mr. Meech. I promise it won’t happen again (…only if you write up that WS Chasing Henderson…)

  • KP

There’s still that option of making theFISTINS.com.
So it doens’t HAVE to happen here again.

Even if she doesn’t e mail you. I still think you won. And hopefully you will get your said email.

I’m sure she’ll be back today.
I’ll put in a good word for you.

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

Thanks KP, my new homie on thefightinsdotcom (not thefistins.com)

  • KP

HAHA. N/p. I got your back. We have 96 days left of this.

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

96 days ain’t nothin’ when you can spend it with your friends at the Fightins! Woot!

  • jessem

Interesting thread. I’m having fun reading all the NYY trolls on our philly sites peppered with the occasional half-page phillies love essays.

  • jabas mom in jail

i feel like werth and utley are in the batting cages like in happy gilmore getting pelted with fast balls in the face, “only 96 days till spring training.” hahahha

  • Luis A. Rosado

    To all the Yankee trolls,

Have fun at your canyon of douchebags parade. Fuck the city of New York, I can’t wait till I leave that shithole. 96 more days.

  • Luis A. Rosado

    *95

  • Watrick

Maybe there should be a count down on thefightins.com, called the Jason Werth Clock, or something for spring training.

  • Jon

So who expects Cole to really come into camp this year in better shape than ever? Do you expect him to buckle down and show real strides in 2010, or is he destined for another mediocre season. I really feel his success depends on his development of the curveball in the off-season, BUT, I wouldn’t be surprised if he learns the cutter from either Ryan Madson or Cliff Lee. A cutter would be a fine substitute and he might take to throwing it better than a sharper breaking ball.

  • CB

Adrian Beltre is priority number one.

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

Feel better about it all, folks. We were a victim of the system: http://joeposnanski.com/JoeBlog/2009/11/05/the-yankees-payroll/

As Joe says, it’s a beleaguered point, but it definitely makes you feel better to get this refreshing take on the non-salary-cap exploitation afforded to NYY

  • KP

It’s funny how you mention the payroll to a Yaknees fan how they make a string of excuses. They won becasue of this or that but NEVER the payroll.

As for Cole I don’t have many high hopes for next year, honestly. I actually think he will go down a steady decline season to season. :/

  • Watrick

If Cole works on his curve ball, or maybe another breaking ball, to change the hitters eye levels, he’ll be decent again. I think he should work on a slider, because he was getting rocked by left handed hitters, and if he can get a ball that fall off the shelf or something, breaking away from them, it would be real hard to pull that ball. Or, maybe talk to KK about that sinker.

  • Watrick

Is this thread going to continue until it reaches 4 digits, or will there be something else posted on thefightins.com that might spur different debates. Maybe like a list of needs for the team to look at for next year?

I’m hoping we go after Mark Derosa. Bring the Penn guy back, let him start maybe once or twice a week between left field, third, and maybe spell Utley or Rollins in the middle. Nonetheless, we need bench help. I’m sorry, but Stairs might be on the way out. Love the guy, but Bako seemed to impress enough to keep a back up roll, and as a left handed bat off the bench. We have Dobbs that had an off year due to injuries and all, but I think he can come back. We need a solid right handed bat off the bench, and solid middle infield help off the bench. Derosa can do both, and much more. The garden Gnome was great last year (or, I guess it’s two years ago now….), and had an off year, but I think he would have benefited from more playing time (which he got the year before when Rollins went down.)

  • Paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay-dro’s soul glo hates Bradley mothafuckin Lights On Lidge

Don’t forget an insurance for Lidge Watrick

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

Friend-o-the-Fightins, Todd Zolecki has ya covered, Watrick:

    http://zozone.mlblogs.com/

  • Watrick

Oh yeah, we need more than that for the bullpen. I guess I was just thinking of something else to spur debate. If Air Eyre ain’t coming back, what do we have for a left handed arm out of the Pen? Happ needs to start, and JC had such an off year, I start to wonder about his future as well. I don’t know his age, but I know he didn’t succeed much before he got here, had two great years, and then there was last year. And yes, we most definitely need something behind Lidge. Rich Hofmann suggested bringing back Myers for a one year deal, to possible pitch out of the pen. This intrigues me. I think we can go after another good solid starter, bulk up the rotation, if we can.

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

Also, I’m not at all opposed to a 4 digit thread. In fact, I fully support it and urge our dear Fightins writers to take some well-deserved time off after back-to-back seasons of bonus coverage.

It can be a free-for-all for now. Sounds like fun to me.

  • Luis A. Rosado

DeRosa’s a solid, versatile player to have. Also, Beltre would be solid pickup who has a solid glove and, when healthy, can hit 20 to 25 homers and drive in 80 to 90 runs.

  • Luis A. Rosado

John Lackey would be a good addition as well to pitch behind Lee

  • Katherine

    Heathcliff–
Whattt? I thought I did send you an email. I guess not. Internet failure!

KP– In 93′ I was two! Hahaha.

  • Luis A. Rosado

Placido Polanco can also return to Philly. He can play third.

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

Katherine – appears it was actually a gmail failure and it went to my spam. Now that’s all fixed up. So cool.

Sorry ’bout that, but thanks for the heads-up.

  • Katherine

    I’m spam :(

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

Apparently gmail thinks so. Gmail & I often don’t agree on what is and is not spam — this is one of those cases.

Maybe your email address closely resembles that of one that sends messages about “Amazing Diet Pills” or whatever.

No worries. I have repremanded gmail for this infraction and I assure you it won’t happen again.

  • Katherine

    Hahahaha. I suppose so.

  • jessem

Lackey has a pretty big price tag does he not? I’d rather lock down Lee.

  • Luis A. Rosado

    @jessem

you do make a good point, I mean we’re not like the yankees who could buy both

  • Luis A. Rosado

    Lee’s a hell of a pitcher

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

Word is the Lee option has been picked up…now to try and keep em around a while…

That’s gonna be tough, but I think he’s totally worth it.

  • Steve Phillips’ Side Piece

Hell even I’m better looking than this Katherine girl.

  • Luis A. Rosado

Steve Phillips can’t keep it in his pants. What a sleazeball.

  • Luis A. Rosado

I’m glad ESPN fired his ass

  • http://twitter.com/JayDashDog Jdashdog

It’s like jail in here. Half of you have turned gay and for the other half, when one piece of ass shows up you all go nuts. I fapped to the avatar though – not gonna lie.

  • Jordan

i think katherine needs to bring some friends to the fightins.
its about time we gets some bitches up in here.

  • jessem

Having just graduated from Temple in August I can attest to the amount of distractions running around that campus.

Anyway, if we get anyone from the Angels I’d really like chone figgins. I have a good feeling about our starting pitching next year.

Hope they give chooch a raise too, he makes less than bruntlett!

  • Lynniemac

I hate to be the one to interject math here, but unless spring training starts on the 8th of February (which would be really early), there are more than 96 days.

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

Hey jessem – cherry & white! Woohoo!

I’m a Temple alum as well.

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

Lynniemac – why you gotta go & make us feel all stoopidz? Allz we did was believe in the Wizard, Jayson Werth…he HAS to be amazing at math….

And can I get a “Go to the mountain, son”? I’ve been hoping to see you on here all day, just to ask you for one of those.

  • Luis A. Rosado

    any good left-handers available?

  • http://www.majorleaguejerk.com Gonzo

Billy Wagner is a free agent.

  • Luis A. Rosado

    I’ll pass

  • Brian

Wagner screwed himself by leaving–missed out on the last 3 yrs while the Mets did nothing

  • Lynniemac

Heathcliff, I love me some J-Dub and hate me some math, but I couldn’t help but try to figure out if he was right or just pulling a number out of his ass. Meh. More time for you and Katherine to work things out, I guess.

It’s been too long a week for me and I lack the energy to be yelling anything, and I’m not sure what mountain they should go to anyway. Maybe they should just be preparing themselves for the run to Base Camp.

Oh, and I went to Temple, too. So fight, fight, fight for the cherry and the white….

  • Little Jimmy Norton

Just read on philly.com that Myers officially will not be back next year..

    http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/Phillies_wont_bring_Myers_back_next_season.html

  • stinkbug

thanks for the sad news little jimmy.

  • Lynniemac

    Well, that sucks.

  • http://www.majorleaguejerk.com Gonzo

Not really. He kinda sucked this year.

  • myers admirers

    noooooooooooo

  • http://www.majorleaguejerk.com Gonzo

It was a great run with Myers. He got a ring with us. He just lost a lot of weight and his fastball went with it.

  • Lynniemac

Unarguably, Gonzo. But I liked him, and I’m sad whenever a player I like goes (and I’m especially sad when a player who wants to be here goes). I may understand the move, but I don’t have to like it. But that’s baseball.

  • http://www.majorleaguejerk.com Gonzo

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    /Tug blows

  • Lynniemac

    You’re welcome.

  • mr_cee

Clifford Phifer is a done deal for at least next year.

Ditto on a payraise for Chooch……….he’s more than earned it.

Even though my son and I got to shake Matt Stairs’ hand after the Flyers/Panthers game a couple weekends ago and he was truly a cool guy to talk to for about 20 seconds…………I’m thinking it’s time for him to consider retirement.

A new and surgically improved Brett Myers for less money isn’t going to happen, so looking elsewhere or prepping some of the kids (Drabek?) will more than likely be the answer.

I really like Pedro’s glove at 3rd and he does seem to get the really clutch hits when you least expect him to but………….he just isn’t the consistent hitter we paid him to come here for. I too like the idea of going after DeRosa, he knows Ruben likes him already.

Dobbs can stay but he’s got to let his hair grow back in. He looks like a candidate for a fishing trip with Jack Nicholson and the boys.

And then there’s Cole. Do we chalk his comments up to immaturity or being a native surfer dude or being all up under Heidi’s thumb? I think the young man has way too much talent and promise to cut him loose or worse, trade him to the Mets, Braves, Marlins or Nats. I say the team brings in a retired drill sergeant to toughen his little baby powder covered ass up and we might end up with a semi-Cliff clone.

When you look at the rest of the team……..I can see the core group busting their asses daily this winter to grab what is rightfully theirs back from the Evil Empire.

Holy Mother of God I can’t wait for next year!

  • http://www.majorleaguejerk.com Gonzo

    big hugs to Lynniemac.

    /Facebook me, baby.

  • KP

    Oh geez. 2 in 93′. Lol. I was 13.

Glad the spam filter thing worked out. Please keep me updated on progress. As I can’t help but feel I’m a big part of this.

    I was there *tear*

  • http://www.majorleaguejerk.com Gonzo

KP, let me know when the police contact you. The over/under is 4 days. I’m taking the under. It’s gonna be a hoot.

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

Lynnie – I just wanted one for old-times sake. Word up to Temple alums….and I knew you were gonna take a shot at the Katherine thing…what’s a guy to do?

KP – you got it. haha

Gonzo – congrats on 500. That’s pretty effing monumental.

  • KP

    LOL, Police?!
Send crazy fist bump guy to protect me please.

  • KP

….I swear she said she was 18 officer.

  • Lynniemac

Heathcliff, not meant as a shot at all, so to atone: “GO TO THE MOUNTAIN, SON!”

    Gonzo, consider it done.

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

What’s all this business about the police?

And thanks Lynnie. I think “shot” was probably the wrong word. I meant something like a “shot,” but friendlier/joking kind of way. Either way, I had a feeling you’d mention and was amused when you did :)

2010 is a whole new mountain & deez boys gunna be ready to go to it!

  • Katherine

Oh my!!! All these Temple alums! :D

Sorry I don’t have many female friend fans of the Phillies. :(

  • KP

So uh…how’s the love connection going guys?

  • KM

    ….Wow Temple.

I went to Penn State. But I’m another female so that shouldn’t be held against me, right?

  • jupiter’s rings

finally got a chance to get to this site. sucks about the series, but i’m looking forward to the 2010 season more than any other one. i pretty much only skimmed this page (500+… sick), but has anyone mentioned John Mayberry Jr.? I’m stoked to see what he has next year. and Jamie Moyer? some sort of pitching coach? maybe in the minors?

  • Watrick

Speaking about Temple, 7 in a row?! Who do they think they are?! Oh man, I can’t wait for number 8! Al Golden just sealed my alumni contribution check. (being an artist for years didn’t do shit for their alumni couffers from me…)

  • Merrill

As a Phils fan living in eastern Maine, this site has been awesome for staying up to date on the Phils. You guys do a truly kick ass job. I too love this team. Great attitude, and great representatives for the Delaware Valley. I would like this team even if I were not a life long fan, because of the way the play on the field, and the way they conduct themselves off it.

The Phillies will be back next year, of that I am certain.
