Playoff Diary: Kyle Kendrick, Barista

This postseason has been quite taxing so far. The last three games against the Rockies were all close, and so were the first two against the Dodogers. Well: Hallelujah! Last night’s 11-0 win finally allowed all of us to relax an enjoy the sights and sounds of playoff baseball. For example, there was Kyle Kendrick, who apparently had to go get lattes for the coaches. Hey, whatever helps the team win. Kendrick actually had an okay year in the minors — still needs to work on that K:BB ratio — and when he was called up he wasn’t too shabby, either, so hopefully he’ll be back in the majors eventually and some other former Rookie of the Year fifth-place finisher will be fetching coffee. (Full credit to Jason Weitzel at Beerleaguer for noticing this.)

• Another day, another chance to bash Tommy Lasorda. He reminded us all on his Twitter account that he hates the Phillie Phanatic. This was pre-game; then he had to go watch the Phanatic celebrate all night as the Phillies lead kept growing larger and larger and larger. If Tommy’s at the game tonight, the Phanatic should — nay, must — dump a whole thing of Popcorn on his head.

Lasorda was apparently hanging all over the Philadelphia area yesteday, as he also made a stop at Geno’s and wrote, “I don’t always eat cheesesteaks, but when I do, I eat at Geno’s.” Hmm. Let’s go back to May 2006, when Lasorda listed his favorite restaurants on his blog. Now, I am an incredibly picky eater and have the palate of a five year old, but even I think this list is stupid. For example, his favorite restaurants in Washington, D.C.: The White House (where he’s apparently eaten) and ESPN Zone. He lists ESPN Zones (and Buca di Beppos) all over the country. This is like listing your favorite pizza place as Domino’s. What’s the point? I was also highly amused that his blog lists all his honorary doctorates on the sidebar. Do you think Lasorda is one of those people who makes you address him as “Doctor” even though he only has honorary degrees?

But I digress. Back over three years ago, Lasorda wrote this about one of his Philadelphia restaurants. I’ll blockquote this because it’s so great:

Pat’s – One word: PhillyCheeseSteaks!

Uhh, you can’t just cram things together and say it’s one word. And why capitalize the ‘S’? But I digress (again)! Sometime over the past three years, apparently, Lasorda has switched from Pat’s to Geno’s. What gives, Tommy?

The point is: I very much enjoyed Tommy Lasorda looking sad last night as the Phillies (and the Phanatic) destroyed the Dodgers.

• What else did I enjoy about the game last night? I liked one of the tags on this Dodgers fan’s Tumblr post about the game: “kuroda, i will chop off your balls.” I think the Phillies had already done that.

• Last year, I took my girlfriend to her first Phillies game pretty early in the year; it was awesome, because the Phillies rallied from 3-0 in the ninth to win. Anyway: Sometime in the game, Jayson Werth didn’t get a ball in center field. It wasn’t really one he could have gotten, but that didn’t stop some stupid fans around us from chanting, “Werth! Less! Werth! Less!” Well, now we have the opposite of that, the Werthwhile shirt. I couldn’t be happier.

• Let’s see what the Daily NewsDavid Murphy had to write in his lede for the 11-0 win.

IT WAS ON the team charter that Jayson Werth realized it would all be OK. In the wake of what could have been a punch-in-the-gut loss in Game 2, the Phillies could have inhabited the type of psychological realm that often leads to physical letdowns of the most gargantuan proportions.

Yes, the Phillies sure could have inhabited that type of psychological realm. Phew! It’s a good thing they stayed out of it, or who knows what would have happened?

• Hm. What else? Wait, what’s that? No, I don’t want to talk about how the Phillies could be going for a sweep tonight. Shush. Look, that could be fun, but Big Game Joe Blanton’s going to give them a 3-1 lead tonight, and that’s good enough for now. Let’s go Phillies!

Each day(-ish) during the postseason, Dan McQuade will write about the Phillies’ chance at a second straight World Series title. You can usually read his thoughts on baseball at Walkoff Walk. If he were going to tonight’s game, he might dump a bucket of popcorn on Tommy Lasorda’s head himself.

  • http://philadelphiawilldo.com/ dmac

Yes, I keep track of Tommy Lasorda blog posts about food from over three years ago. What?

  • http://www.twitter.com/underthebridge1 Walklett

    One word: TommyLasordaIsAJerkoff

  • miss bee

to be fair, we really should let him know that they opened a delfrisco’s here.

  • http://www.scrappleplusiggs.blogspot.com Civil Negligence

I think he’s still mad cause the Phantic recently lost more weight than him.

  • Brian

Lasorda is a true moron in every sense of the word

  • http://thefightins.com/ Tug Haines

    Jon Lovitz’s Lasorda > Tommy Lasorda’s Lasorda

  • Harry Kalas Murder Conspiracy Theory

The best was when Stuttering John asked Lasorda if he gave back the money that SlimFast gave him.

  • Heathcliff Slocumb

@dmac – I was at that 9th inning comeback game last year too, with my sister. It still stands as one of the most memorable games I’ve been to. Chris Snelling HR, Pat Burrel HR, Geoff Jenkins gets to first on a K + past ball/WP, and then runs through the stop sign at third and was definitely OUT at home…for the win.

Good stuff. Thanks for reminding me of that comeback gem!

  • bigmyc

Ya know what I like about those in charge of this blog site?; You guys can take a joke and allow independant thought, usually no matter how off center it may seem.

    Just wanted to utter that.

Congrats on not being uptight pinheads. (cough, cough, Igglesblog, cough, cough).

  • http://thefightins.com/ Tug Haines

    According to Chad Durbin (@ShowcaseU):

“I pulled Cliff Lee’s finger and gold coins filled his shorts.”

  • Fightins Newbie

I noticed Kyle delivering those drinks, and knew there would be a screenshot today…well done!

  • Minty Fresh

still want that shot of Lasorda checking his watch….

  • phillygirl

Quote from a Dodgers fan: “Even when we get Howard out, he still gets an RBI.”

  • Minty Fresh

anyone catch Myers walk by Lee in the dugout last night after Lee’s night was finished? seemed very cold…no high five, nothin.

might be time to send Myers elsewhere….he’s no happy camper now.

  • Fightins Newbie

@Minty..I think Myers is outta here any way you look at it…I think this is a contract year for him anyway. Between that, his antics over the years, his probable demand for a high salary, and with Drabek, Bastardo, Kendrick waiting in the wings…..its pretty obvious he is likely to be set free.

  • Minty Fresh

@ Fightins…i agree completely. but i mean RIGHT NOW…i don’t want a cancer in the clubhouse. there has to be white trash convention we can send him to, all expenses paid of course.

  • http://pabaseball.blogspot.com gm-carson

Karma is finally paying me back. I just got 4 free tickets to tonight’s game in section 133. They’re $125 face value…and I got them for free!!!

  • stinkbug

mlb advanced media removed the video of the guy cooling you off and punching you out.
    http://www.thefightins.com/meechone/mets-fan-gets-ktfo-by-a-phillies-fan-in-citi-field/

THAT IS SO WRONG i was just going to show it to someone.

  • http://www.3cornerblog.blogspot.com OutlawPete

    Live Game Blog?

  • Tartan69

@Minty Fresh – I noticed the same thing. I’d chalk it up to cluelessness as much as coldness. Either way, he’s gone unless he agrees to a low base pay and a bullpen spot. Probably not going to happen.

  • Shawn

@gm-carson. You don’t need four tickets, do you? Come on…I’ll be your friend.

  • Eric

I need the kids with their fancy iphones to upload the fun chants from last night’s game.

  • dlhunter

But seriously where did you all sit last night?

  • Watrick

Jason Stark exposes the true greatness of Ryan Howard, once again: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs/2009/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=4576108
Just a little over 2/3′s of the way down-when talking about 2007.

  • BigMiles

I’m watching the Yanks/Angels game right now and I’m so unbelievably and completely annoyed at how many Yankees fans there are out in LA at the game.

So I’m going to say this slowly and with the realization that we need to win two more games before I worry about this: If anyone deliberately sells their Phillies world series tickets to someone who is a fan of the opposing team, I will find you and burn down your house. And piss on the ashes.

  • http://www.3cornerblog.blogspot.com OutlawPete

    @ Biggie Miles:

forgot about that game. have it on now. are they sure they are playing in LA (of A?)? Way too many yankmes fans

  • Pete

Buco Di Beppo ? !! ?! One of Lasordas favorite places. What a Douche Bag

  • Rex Banner

Best quote from Larry Anderson on the radio last night:

“J. Martin doesn’t like the call. And neither does Russell Martin.

  • Watrick

Rex-when they started making fun of his name-that was hilarious.

  • Lynniemac

Also hilarious was when Franzke stopped mid-sentence to listen to the chants, then reported “they’re saying “you took steroids”" while laughing.

  • http://www.majorleaguejerk.com Gonzo

Franzke: Do you know what the J means on Martin’s jersey?
    L.A.: I have a couple ideas…
    (Franzke LOLs)

  • will.H

gm-carson ill give you a ZJ for one of those tickets

  • http://www.cranekickchronicles.com Crane Kick

    Great now I’m hungry again

  • dlhunter

    are we live blogging?

  • Lynniemac

TBS shows a sign that says “Thanks, Cleveland”…
    LA, laughing: They’re thanking Cleveland!
Franzke, also laughing: Cleveland really DOES rock.

  • http://www.3cornerblog.blogspot.com OutlawPete

no live blog? come on guys

  • mr_cee

no live blog is like a day without making Manny look like dogshit

  • Brandon

This is the only story they’ll talk about with the phillies. And they have to make the dodgers sound better in it. With everytime sager talks, i want to beat the snot out of him more.

  • J Dubs

    26 outs to go.

  • MoyerIsMyHero

I sure hope the ‘You Took Steroids” chant starts with Manny’s first at-bat.

  • J Dubs

FIRST PITCH HIT FOR THE PHILLIES. Great start!

  • Lynniemac

    Oops, there’s goes Wolfie’s no-hitter.

  • Pasadena_Phan

Sweet! J-Roll gets on right out of the gate!

  • Lynniemac

@Moyer: I hope it started when Manny ran out to left.

  • J Dubs

YOU WANT EVIDENCE ON HOW FAR THAT FUCKING PITCHTRAX IS OFF? THERE IT IS.

  • J Dubs

    BIG BROWN DOES IT AGAIN!

  • Brandon

That man is going nuts in the postseason

  • Lynniemac

But, but, but… Lefties can’t hit off Wolf….And, and, and Wolf has only given up one homer to a lefthander…

  • MoyerIsMyHero

Hell Yeah, Ryan! Tied with Gehrig!

  • Pasadena_Phan

    Unreal! Go Big Piece!

  • MoyerIsMyHero

    BTW: Fuck yeah, Angels!!!!

  • J Dubs

Wow. The Angels actually know how to win a game. That’s… satisfactory. lol

  • J Dubs

    Manny looks pissed.

  • dlhunter

and larry anderson mentions every possible name russell martin could go by….

  • http://www.3cornerblog.blogspot.com OutlawPete

I don’t want to be “that gut” but now that it looks like we will win the pennant, I kinda want the Yanks to win. Before I only cared about our series but now I’m thinkin Yanks-Phils WS

  • http://www.3cornerblog.blogspot.com OutlawPete

    that guy* haha

  • mr_cee

obviously a case of roid rage setting in

  • dlhunter

    @outlaw
now that’s what i call thinking with your stomach! (rim shot)

  • mr_cee

pretty generous with the strike zone wouldn’t you say?

  • MoyerIsMyHero

@Pete, not sure I agree. Part of me wants to totally give the finger to what FOX, MLB, ESPN, etc, want and let it be a Phillies/Angels WS.

Plus, after this series, do you really want to watch a whole WS of FOX broadcasters fellating the Yankees.

  • Lynniemac

If it’s Phils/Yankees, I will have to stop talking to my father for the duration. He hasn’t gotten over 1950, and I don’t want to hear about it anymore.

  • MoyerIsMyHero

If you could guarantee that we would beat them, I could maybe get behind it. But (God forbid) losing to the Yankees would be unbearable. I’d rather just avoid that possibility all together.

  • http://www.3cornerblog.blogspot.com OutlawPete

    @ Moyer

I really don’t care about the non-attention from the networks anymore. Matter of fact I’ve come to enjoy it. We’ll keep flying under the radar and win another championship. I don’t care if we get recognized for it because the Philly area and those scattered throughout the world will come together and celebrate just the same.

  • Brandon

Completely agree with Moyer. The big networks don’t want fightins/angels. And the announcers talk alot about the dodgers being royal, but the with the yankees, it would be nonstop.

  • MoyerIsMyHero

Yeah, I guess it isn’t that bad, but when it comes down to it, I don’t know any Angels fans. Ergo, I could live with losing to them. On the other hand, I know plenty of Yankees fans, and I can’t stand the thought of losing to them.

  • mr_cee

Yankees fans are Mets fans in drag.

  • http://www.3cornerblog.blogspot.com OutlawPete

Then we don’t lose to them

  • Lynniemac

    Excellent solution, Pete.

  • Mike P

I could get into a Phils-Yanks series. Mostly because I think the Phils would beat the ever living daylights out of the Yanks.

  • mr_cee

Having to live with the possibility of meeting up with the Yanks and then, God forbid lose, would be most uncomfortable.

  • mr_cee

But beating them would be the greatest of rewards.

  • J Dubs

I got sidetracked on that walk to Kemp. How many balls were total bullshit?

  • MoyerIsMyHero

Oh, no doubt that we’d most likely kick their bitchasses all over the Mid-Atlantic. We took 2 of 3 from them this year – at Yankee Stadium! I guess I’m just weak-stomached when it comes to the possiblity of losing to evil franchises.

  • http://www.twitter.com/kamala77 kamala77

Well there goes joe’s perfect game…

  • mr_cee

    roughly 75%

  • Lynniemac

    SHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANE

  • http://www.twitter.com/kamala77 kamala77

    SHANE!!!!! Nice catch NQA!!

  • mr_cee

that was just a little to damn close!

  • MoyerIsMyHero

Yeah, too close. Now I really feel like we need some more runs.

Also, the steroid chant is a little disorganized tonight.

  • J Dubs

C’mon CBP. Chant in unison. I can barely make out what you’re saying.

  • dlhunter

If only people knew which section everyone was in last night!

  • http://www.majorleaguejerk.com Gonzo
  • J Dubs

    THERE WE GO!

  • mr_cee

must be the avacadoes messing them up

  • MoyerIsMyHero

Notice how the TBS announcers mention the fans are ‘serenading’ Manny but won’t report what they are saying. Just like they kept referring to his 50-day “absence” (or occasionally ‘suspension’), but never said what it was for.

  • Lynniemac

I was at the grocery store the other day and saw a whole display of avocados. I refused to buy any.

  • chase.me

T-Mac: “Have you seen those ‘Cadillac-time’ T-shirts they have now?
Sarge: “I’m not getting any residuals on those. And no, I haven’t.”

  • http://www.4daysrest.com 4daysrest.com

    GAME RECAP:

    FUCK YEAH JIMMY

  • Tartan69

Yes I also will eagerly be awaiting Franzke’s call to be posted on the Fightins tomorrow. Apparently it had something to do with madness.

They call them World Fucking Champions for a reason…

  • Mand

and who would have thought the phils bullpen gave up 0 runs tonight. dodgers gave up 3. kiss my ass mlb and tbs. maybe now they’ll stop blowing the dodgers bullpen.

  • maxL

    Hoorah!

  • maxL

    OH MAN I’M GOOD.

  • Mand(i)

i was gonna go for it but i figured noone was here so it would be not as exciting. congrats tho haha

  • http://www.4daysrest.com 4daysrest.com

    PANAFUCKINMANIA!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Nell

Franzke’s call was flipping amazing…he flipped out and started screaming at the top of his lungs. I will never listen to the TV announcers again after listening to the radio guys tonight.

  • dlhunter

Like 5 minutes after the game was over Franzke just yelled “MADNESS! THIS IS MADNESS!”

  • Ray

there’s a nice “mothafucka” at the end of the highlight clip on phillies.com

  • TheOtherJim

…and a big FUCK YOU to Ron “Well, see, the Dodgers only need 6 more outs instead of 9 because Broxton is lights out” Darling. How about you pay your taxes and shut the fuck up, you ex-Met douche-nozzle.

  • dlhunter

Still waiting for mlb.com to make the radio archive available.

  • Darkwing Duck

Decided on a whim to listen to the radio broadcast tonight. No need to do ANYTHING different next time. Franzke made you long for the days when baseball on the radio was the only way. Goosebumps doesn’t even BEGIN to describe it.

  • http://www.3cornerblog.blogspot.com OutlawPete
  • dlhunter

And yea, that’s Ryan Howard dropping the “You did it, mothafucka!” to Jimmy.

  • will.H

    pledge your alleee-gunzz

  • Phylan
  • dlhunter

You’ve made my night, phylan. I can now masturbate and go to bed.

    Only sorta kidding.

  • J Dubs

You’re not going to bed, are you dl?

  • werththewait

    Thank you Phylan.

He did go nuts. Great call, great game.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have ourselves a very special ballclub this season.
