Pending Tampon Removal, Oswalt a Phillie
Posted by at 8:06 am ET 244 Comments

According to Mark Berman of FOX 26 in Houston, the Phillies and Astros have agreed to a deal that will send Oswalt to the Phils. They now have to wait for Oswalt to approve the deal. Here’s hoping Rube didn’t completely mess this up.

  • Dubee Dubee Du

    Just hoping he’s healthy.

  • J.A. Happ

    I do not like this!

  • J.A. Happ

I GET NO RESPECT AROUND HERE EVEN THOUGH I HAVE DONE NOTHING BUT BE A BEASTLY WINNER SINCE I GOT HERE!!

  • beef

So Lee ain’t worth 9 for one but this old, injury prone midget will get 32 for 2?

    way to go, ruben.

and if Lee signs for less than 16 a year when he goes to the yanks or mets, then what?

  • Just.Anxious. Happ

I don’t see how this deal works out, I’m thinking about it a lot and I don’t see how they can do this. And I think too, I think I have a no-trade clause – I honestly remember something about one but I’m blanking on where it was, but yeah, I just don’t see how this works out.

    They can’t do this right?

  • Muscles

    atleast it’s not a bloody sock…. :?

  • 85

Second, Dube. If he’s healthy this is a typical Ed Wade fleecing.

  • Fightins Withdrawl Support Group

    God I missed you.

  • GTO

Thank God the site is back up. I have been crying myself to sleep for a week

  • Doug Glanville

Taking bets for when Rube flips Oswalt to Seattle for three crappy prospects.

  • Jordan

HOW FUCKING STUPID IS OUR GENERAL MANAGER?

  • Jordan

ANY ASSHOLE WHO HAS EVER PLAYED FANTASY BASEBALL COULD DO A BETTER JOB!

    here’s a great idea

    1. trade away our best pitcher from last year for prospects
    2. keep those shitty prospects and trade away our good prospects for a pitcher whose salary is twice as much.

now lets trade halladay for prospects and then use those prospects to get a shittier and more expensive pitcher.
YOU SUCK RUBEN!! YOU’RE NAMED AFTER A FUCKING SANDWICH.

  • Tommy Bunz

We basically traded 1 year of Lee and 5 years of Happ for the chance to overpay injury-prone Oswalt for 2 years and a bunch of scrubs.

At this point I’m not sure Amaro could manage Bull’s BBQ without fucking it up.

  • 85

How are people complaining about this? Realize that, if this deal happens, three of the last four trades in the entire league involving really great ace pitchers have involved the Phillies getting said ace. And the fourth involved the one we already had going to Texas. Rube’s trying to win, and if he pulled this off without taking any more than Happ off the big league roster, great job.

  • Jesus Werth

    OH SHIT

btw – might have to remove my image from the random pimpin’ header

  • Jordan

and how the hell is milt thomas getting fired any sort of news? i read that on espn like two weeks ago. this site is way behind. get your shit together.

  • Jordan

    85 is stupid.

he doesn’t understand that if we hadn’t traded lee to begin with we wouldn’t even have to give up happ. if he was really trying to win and he had a fucking brain, we would have halladay and lee at the top of our rotation.

  • http://www.baconandbiscuits.com Bacon And Biscuits

Good thing we are getting Oswalt. I was getting tired of our offense getting shutout. This should take care of that problem.

  • http://www.twitter.com/DingDong1003 John Kruk’s Lonely Nut

    Is this Jordan guy retarded?

  • PreserveJon

No need to relive the past. What’s done with Lee is done. Glad to see the site is back. Tell @petzrawr he should be ashamed of his photoshop ability. Missed you Meech!

  • 85

I am stupid. Jordan said so. I should develop a hard-on for JA Happ that has no basis in fact or common sense so that I might be less stupid.

  • beef

    methinks Jordan is joking

  • Jordan

ok, 85. lets forget about happ. lets just say he’s a piece of shit pitcher who won’t contribute at all to the phillies (which isn’t true, but whatever). oh and lets also forget about the prospects we might be sending them. who gives a shit? just prospects right? i mean up until last night dom brown was just a prospect, and he fucking sucks right? lets just look at salaries. we didn’t want to pay lee 8 mil for 1 season but we’ll pay oswalt 5 mil for 2 months?

  • http://twitter.com/tonyvolpe78 Ghost of Larry Anderson’s Liver

well look who finally paid the internet bill!

  • http://twitter.com/Gaze_NJ Gaze_NJ

Oswalt is going to get $5M for 2 months from Philadelphia. It’s likely that Houston will pay about half of that and almost half of the $16M owed next season. We’ll be getting Oswalt for well under market value. The dollars and cents shouldn’t be as much of a concern as who we are giving up.

But regardless, the Lee deal is done. If the alternative is to do nothing, then I’ll take Oswalt for Happ and a trio of mid tier prospects any day of the week.

  • Cola Classic

I feel like there’s an unwritten scientific rule that says too many aces on one team throws the balance of the universe off. They wouldn’t be aces then; just regular pitchers. Maybe there’s some mental factor in that you being known as an ace that can affect your performance?

I will not pick sides on whether this is good or bad just that Rube is doing what he thinks is best so I have faith in him. I will weigh in and say: Halladay>Lee

  • 85

Yeah Jordan, until last night Domonic Brown was just a prospect. He was also the guy they refused to include in any deal for Halladay, or any deal for Lee, or any deal for anyone else. Because he’s better than the guys they are willing to trade. The Phils are loaded with talent at the A level with not much at AA or AAA. You go right ahead and find me the team that turns good A-level prospects into good major leaguers at a 100% success rate. I’ll wait…

I’m not saying moving Lee was a great plan, but what the hell should Amaro do about it now aside from continue trying to make the team better?

Can I assume you’d gladly give up Halladay for one glimpse of Kyle Drabek in red pinstripes?

  • http://bonerowner.com crazy4swayze

i’m really surprised at the lack of excitement. oswalt is a significant upgrade on happ. if houston is picking up some of next year’s tab and we’re not picking up the 2012 option…then what isn’t fantastic about getting a great pitcher in exchange for ja happ and some blueclaws? would i prefer they had just kept lee? yes. but they didn’t…and this deal would improve the team as it currently stands.

  • Uncle Charlie’s hands

I hear Houston is great place for single people. *cough* Jay *cough*

  • Doug Glanville

Hey meech, what’s wrong with the RSS feed?

  • 85

@crazy4swayze: I feel the same way re the lack of excitement. I sure as hell hope the fanbase isn’t turning into entitled twits like Sox or Yanks fans.

  • Jordan

    trade halladay for drabek!!!!!!

  • Crocks

I thought Lee was to get 10 mil for this season. If they’re paying Oswalt 5 mil then that’s significantly less.
Reason I’m sayin is, people keep acting like making this Oswalt deal would be like the Phils admitting they f’d up with Lee. I still think the owners give Rube a number for total payroll each year that he just can’t exceed.

  • http://twitter.com/j_tee_r Jdashdog

Why don’t you guys just shut the fuck up and bask in the glory of Dom Brown?

  • http://www.the700level.com Matt P.

Great to have you fine gentlemen back.

  • Brian

At least they are making some deal…the status quo is not likely to get this bunch far in the playoffs assuming they make it at all…sure the last week has been great, but overall this season has been erratic at best

  • http://twitter.com/j_tee_r Jdashdog

Yoooo what happened to the like buttons?

  • spacecoyote

Wow, you guys are fucking downers, for reals. Dom Brown and Roy Oswalt are in red pinstripes – be excited!

  • http://twitter.com/j_tee_r Jdashdog

@crazy @85, I think some of the lack of excitement can be attributed to Oswalt’s seeming unwillingness to want to come here.

  • beef

9:04am: The Astros will receive three players for Oswalt, tweets Rosenthal, while also paying a “very significant” part of his salary. Happ will be one of the three.

the salary part makes me feel better about this. which is dumb, it isn’t my money

  • 85

I think the whole bit about him not wanting to come to Philly has been overblown. The only place where I can remember hearing he did want to go was St. Louis. He wanted to be traded, presumably somewhere he’d win. And he wanted to make his money. I wouldn’t put too much stock in the rest; if the trade happens he’s going be happy about it.

  • Bryan

What is his hesitation about coming to Philly? Is he one of those “CBP is a band box” idiots?

  • Jordan

    I EAT COCK

  • http://bonerowner.com crazy4swayze

    @jdash, 85

yeah, i’ve always heard he prefers the south/midwest. that’s fine, people are allowed to prefer whatever they want. i’ve never heard him say “i would never play for a team on either coast”, i think that’s just the conclusion people have drawn. i believe houston actually has a larger population than philadelphia (4th largest city vs 5th largest city in the states from what i recall) so the idea that “he couldn’t handle it here” seems silly to me.

  • http://twitter.com/Gaze_NJ Gaze_NJ

Minute Maid Park currently ranks 12th and CBP is 10th in HRs allowed… not a major difference. CBP being labeled a band box simply isn’t as true as most people make it out to be.

  • Shawn James

I should go to the blueclaws game tonight just to say goodbye to some of these players… and it is thirsty thrusday anyway… DOLLAR BEERS BITCHES.

Yeah I have a drinking problem… what of it?

  • Crocks

People say “it isn’t my money” a lot but if your team overpays player A and then can’t afford player B, well that sucks balls. So people should care how their team fills it’s payroll.
I think it’s great for THIS YEAR if we get Oswalt, but for the next two years I’m not sold on him really. I mean it’s nice if the Astros are paying part of his salary, but the back issues he’s had could make him vs. Happ a wash down the road…

  • Tyson

If the trade happens, it’ll be because he approved it, so his ass better be happy to play for a contender. Houston is garbage and has no chance of winning within the next 3 years. If he wants any chance at playing for a championship (and that’s what all athletes strive for, isn’t it?), he’ll come to Philly.

I don’t really like the deal, and I’d rather they kept the roster the same to allow for more flexibility next year, but hey, this team is primed to win now, and thats what Rubes is trying to do.

You can’t deny that Rubes has been aggressive and has tried to help this team win since he became GM. The Phillies are always included in some of the biggest trade talks, and whether or not they happen, its exciting to know that our GM will do whatever it takes to find the talent to make the Phillies the best team in the league.

  • James Anthony Happ

    Seriously!??????

  • James Anthony Happ

I can pitch here for peanuts for 5 more years, at least! And you guys are gonna trade me? Good luck trying to resign my buddy Werth in the offseason –or getting some much-needed bullpen help– with whatever money there’s left after this trade (none!).

  • http://twitter.com/killadelfia KILLADELFIA

Doc, Hollywood, Oswalt, Dom Brown, Joey the Blant. Not a bad rotation.

  • C

Suddenly the pitching is looking overwhelmingly righthanded.

  • http://www.twitter.com/undeadgonzo Gonzo

I don;t like this trade, I love it. This trade will put us on par with Atlanta’s rotation. Great move, Ruben. You’ve redeemed yourself.

  • 85

    @ C, that’s because Moyer’s left arm fell off.

  • phils43

awful deal. i hope ruben amaro drives into an embankment.

  • Big Stein

Way to trade your prospects and decent young pitching for a guy who is getting older and less effective. Seriously, well done.

  • http://www.twitter.com/undeadgonzo Gonzo

@Big Stein – You are sorely mistaken.

    Oswalt’s stats this year: 129 IP, 109 hits, 13 HR, 34 BB, 120 K, 3.42 ERA , 1.10 WHIP.

    He is terrific this year.

  • http://twitter.com/Gaze_NJ Gaze_NJ

    Older and less effective…

Oswalt currently has the highest K/9 rate of his career and the lowest Hits/9 rate of his career. Explain how he’s “less effective”

  • 85

But… but… win-loss record! Ace for a bad team! Amaro should jump of a bridge!

  • Eric

If Ruben does actually trade for Oswalt, I will be taking a hiatus from here and 700level. I commend guys like 85 and Gaze for showing basic level intelligence and trying to explain to this stupid fucking city why this is a good move. You guys have more patience than I. Keep up the good work.

  • James Anthony Happ

    They want Singleton, too.

    Overpaying, perhaps??

  • Adam

If Jonathon Singleton is involved in this trade, I will forever hate Ruben Amaro.

  • James Anthony Happ

    Give them Gillies instead!

  • Tyson

Let me state the obvious: this sets up the 2011 rotation to be Halladay, Oswalt, Hamels, Blanton and Lee!

  • Curt Schilling

I used to think that the Cliff Lee trade was the stupidest thing Rube’s ever done. But now I am beginning to doubt that…

  • The Dude

People need to realize that it isn’t necessarily RAJ’s fault that he had to deal Lee for prospects in order to acquire Halladay. If you want to blame someone for the tight pursestrings despite being a large market contender, blame the collective minority owners who refuse to allow a higher payroll and still treat the team like a small market cellar-dweller in order to protect their investment. As it’s been said numerous times, the past is past. We don’t have Lee anymore. Anyway, Halladay guaranteed for four seasons is FAR greater than Lee for possibly only one more (not to mention cheaper. A superior pitcher for less money is a no-brainer, people). Furthermore, Class A prospects have a far way to travel to become big leaguers, and RAJ is doing what he needs to do to get a championship squad on the field again. Good deal in my opinion in getting Oswalt, and let’s not forget that Happ is coming off a bad injury and may not be as effective as he once was, at least for awhile. RAJ gets much more flak than he deserves, but it’s to be expected since he is the face of the front office.

  • James Anthony Happ

Replenishing the farm system by depleting it.

    It’s the way to go!

  • Tyson

    I’m all for this trade.

Look at it this way: we’re 3.5 games out of 1st place at this point. Our starting rotation is somewhat shaky beyond Halladay and Hamels (Blanton’s been better, but he’s still liable to get hammered every once and awhile).

In my opinion, Oswalt is definitely going to contribute to making up those 3.5 games throughout the rest of the season, especially with 6 HUGE September games vs the Braves.

This deal is a good one as long as Ruben doesn’t overpay for him with prospects.

  • Uncle Charlie’s hands

I heard a 1b man is tearing up the ball in Reading.

  • Mike P

This is a good move for the regular season, a GREAT move for October. If the Phils make the playoffs, teams will be shitting themselves when they see who they’re facing every day. Great move by Amaro. Hopefully they can hold on to Cosart, Colvin, and Singleton, though if they get as much cash as we’re seeing in the reports, I’d be OK with one of those guys departing.

  • Phils Phan

    Don’t like the trade.

  • Eric

    Phils Phan fucking kill yourself.

85 – where did you just get your JD from?

  • spacecoyote

You’d think J.A. Happ was Tim Lincecum judging by the reaction on here.

  • Eric

Here’s how I convinced people that we need Oswalt:

WHEN the Phillies make the World Series this year, it’s at home. If things are set up well, we have Roy game 1 and Cole game 2. Awesome.

Who the fuck pitches game 3 on the road in New York? I am going to love some of these answers.

  • 85

Eric – got the JD from Pitt Law.

  • http://twitter.com/j_tee_r Jdashdog

@Eric, you are fucking right. There is nobody on the team right now I want pitching in a game three unless it’s Hamels…because Oswalt pitched game 2.

  • Phils Phan

    @ 85:

Staying out there or returning back here to practice?

    @ Eric:

Honestly, I never had a reason to dislike you. After that, I can see why folks here think you’re a douche. Eat a dick.

  • 85

Phan: Looking both places. All things being equal I’d love to come back east, but the cost of living here is great. It’ll depend on what the opportunities are.

  • James Anthony Happ

“Hearing Oswalt not a fan of Citizens Bk Pk, but he’s 4-0, 2.60 ERA in 4 starts-tied with Coors for best win pct at any current park.”
    -Stark

  • Eric

    Kill myself.

  • Lynniemac

“If Ruben does actually trade for Oswalt, I will be taking a hiatus from here and 700level.”

    Ruben: DO THIS DEAL NOW!!!!!!

  • Bozo

If he gets here and he is a princess I’ll probably dislike him for a while. Obviously we’d all rather have kept Lee but as we were discussing in the recent thread, Ruben has a boss too and we don’t know more than a contract was offered and Lee was traded. I do think it’s stupid to trade Happ though. There’s still a pretty big chance Royswalt declines the trade and it wouldn’t surprise me if he does.

  • Tyson

Imagine what will happen the next time Oswalt pitches in Philly if he declines this trade?

  • Bozo

Maybe we should glue a bunch of batteries together to make some super big one the size of the mound and have the Phanatic throw it at him?

  • Phils Phan

    @ 85:

Best of luck and success to you. And remember–just because you’ll be a licensed attorney doesn’t mean you no longer can use the phrase “eat a dick”. If it did, I’d be in trouble.

  • PUSH-UP BRA

LEE IS BETTER THAN OSWALT!! REMEMBER THAT PEOPLE — ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT!!

  • Harry Schmeckle

    I hate Roy Oswalt — I hate anybody from Texas — they’re redneck a**holes.

  • 85

@ PhilsPhan: You’d be surprised how many times I ended up using that phrase on my bar essays.

  • MoyerIsMyHero

I really think reacting strongly either way to this trade is probably premature. This is definitely one of those deals where we won’t know if it was good or bad until we see how things play out. If Oswalt gets hurt a lot or slows down and whoever we trade turns out to be great, than it was bad. But if Oswalt can team up with Halladay and Hamels to shut down play-off opponents this year AND next, it was a good deal. It’s kind of silly to pretend you KNOW he’s going to suck or be great or whatever.

  • Harry Schmeckle

I don’t want any Texan on this team… Rednecks are not welcome in Philly!

  • What can brown do for you?

People, everyone knows Rube fucked up with the Lee fiasco. However, Lee is now a Ranger. We can’t have him. So my question is, what one of you would rather have Happ start a playoff game over Oswalt?

  • Bozo

Well we probably would have known if Happ got the start he deserved in the World Series instead of Pedro who was sick at the time.

  • http://twitter.com/Gaze_NJ Gaze_NJ

Happ spends half the season on the DL with arm issues, and yet people are concerned with getting a guy who every year throws 200+ innings and makes 30+ starts?

As for Singleton, the Phillies don’t have a leg to stand on in demanding they keep him. 1) Matt Rizzotti has shown just as much promise at a higher level. 2) Ryan Howard is blocking both of their ways for the foreseeable future. 3) He projects as a DH to most scouts. The Phils have no leverage and quite frankly he has little value to them. You’ll never see the Phils get a decent return on him.

  • wheels’ hairpiece

anybody else notice how other phillies’ sites are filled with geriatric sabermetric douchebags…

    WELCOME BACK FIGHTINS, LITERALLY

  • Tyson

    “I hate Roy Oswalt — I hate anybody from Texas — they’re redneck a**holes.”

“I don’t want any Texan on this team… Rednecks are not welcome in Philly!”

If that’s the case, how do you feel about Kyle Kendrick? Oh, by the way, your last name is Schmeckle.

  • Ozzie Virgil’s Beard

There’s only room for one Roy on this team as far as I’m concerned and he threw last night.

  • MoyerIsMyHero

And even if you think Ruben is stupid, the trade is with Houston; so ask yourself: Who is stupider, Ruben or Ed Wade?

  • Squints

What is with everyone saying that Roy Oswalt is soooo old? First of all he is younger than our savior (Roy Halladay). And the fact that you say that he’s out of his prime, his numbers this season are ridiculous (129 IP, 34 BB, 120 K, 3.42 ERA). Enough said. You guys need to cheer up and support this team and our GM for actually doing everything in their power to get this team to another WS.

  • Mike W

Well he’s going to give the OK to come here according to Stark.

  • What can brown do for you?

RoyO plans to accept, via Jayson Stark.

  • Bozo

    K. His new name is Royswalt. Remember, I came up with it bitches.

  • RicoBrogna

Since i still can’t get over Lee being traded for a bunch of nobodies I guess Oswalt can help me get over that fact. it’s sad that i can’t get over Lee especially since it’s the end of July but it still bugs me. So Oswalt will be a nice rebound if he accepts the trade here.

  • http://www.twitter.com/undeadgonzo Gonzo

Anyone know what Jayson Stark has to say on the matter?

  • RicoBrogna

Oh and welcome back Fightins website i thought it was the end of the world when i couldn’t access this wonderful website!

  • Bozo

Eh I don’t think it’s fair to call them nobodies just yet. Gillies has apparently been hurt most of the season.

  • Bozo

Oh and does anyone have a stream to the Nats/Braves game from the Nats telecast? Fuck the Braves telecast, it will probably be too annoying.

  • Harry Schmeckle

Keep Oswalt away — we know how narrowminded Texans are! They’re ubder conservative and typically very redneck-y!

P.S. Tyson is probably a white cracker punk!!

  • Tyson

    @Gonzo

Both Stark and Adam Rubin have said sources confirm that Oswalt will accept the deal, but nothing is official yet.

I welcome royswalt (thanks Bozo), let’s get back to running the NL East like we’re supposed to.

So it looks like Roy Jr. is ready to pull the string.

  • adbphilly

I hope Rueben doesnt involve Kyle Drabek in this deal. That would suck.

  • Bozo

Don’t be stupid Jess. Oswalt’s out pitch is his curveball(pulling the string is change-up)!

That sounded so much better before I typed it. Please forgive me.

  • Brandon

So they’re looking at Miguel Tejada and Willie Bloomquist why?

  • jack

dude drabeks has already been traded in the halladay deal and he just threw a no hitter in double-A

Beats me. Can’t be any better or worse than Dobbs/Valdez/Ransom. I’m growing a bit of a liking towards Valdez, he’s got an attitude and a rocket of an arm despite the DP’s.

  • Bozo

Sigh, Braves luck out on a ground-rule double after Lowe hit a batter. Runner probably woulda scored from first.

  • James Anthony Happ

If it’s me (Happ) + Gose + Worley and that bit*h Ed Wade sends some money on top of that, then I think it’s a very reasonable for the Phils.

    OMFG my withdrawal is diminishing.

  • adbphilly

    @ bozo

i know i was being sarcastic. Rueben had drabek coveted last year thats why we couldnt get halladay when the tradedeadline approached last year and we wound up with trading donald and carrasco for lee. Then all the sudden drabek was off rueben’s leash in the offseason and we got doc. good for drabek with the no-no. now we trade an o.k. performer this year in happ but did the job for us for an aging ace. and theres reporst now that rueben wants jose bautista from toronto, question mark

  • James Anthony Happ

    Will[y] Nieves!!

happ isn’t that young..he’s 27 going on 28 in october. this was a good deal.

Hoping it’s Happ, Gose, and Worley (instead of Singleton) at this point…

  • James Anthony Happ

If it’s Oswalt (without guaranteeing 2012 option) + $11M FOR Happ, Worley, Gose,

…then I think RAJ has healed all wounds from the Cliff Lee fiasco.

  • Bozo

No. If Oswalt gives up 1 run everyone is going to bitch about it(and by everyone I mean mostly the Philly.com and CSNPhilly.com commentators).

  • Bozo

So Hamels is our number 2 yeah? He sure as hell deserves it but there are already people putting Oswalt as the number 2 which is completely unfair to Cole.

  • James Anthony Happ

    H2O

    Halladay
    Hamels
    Oswalt

Plus, it’s always better to go R-L-R

  • Joe Blanton

Roy Oswalt’s coming from Houston?! I sure hope he can show me how to make some of that BBQ beef brisket

  • Bozo

Nats 4-3 in a rain delay.

  • PhillyPhanInChi

I still can’t understand why people are hung up on Cliff Lee. Dude was awesome. Owners told RAJ we can’t retain him.
    He’s gone.
He’s going to get 22ml for 4 or 5 years from the Yankees which is an offer we could and would never come close to matching since we’re looking for 3 year deals with established Vets.

This deal, if it’s what’s being reported, will be touted as a pure fleecing and sets us up with a starting 4 of Doc, Hamels, Oswalt and Blanton for the next 4 years. Can anyone out there tell me a better starting 4 in the NL?

Oh yeah, if it is 11ml we’re getting from Wade, then we’re only paying him 13ml for this and next and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Phillies pick up that option year. 2.3 years for fucking 29 mil people is a hell of a lot less than Lee.

  • James Anthony Happ

Remember 10 months ago, when we were saying how left-handed our rotation was?? (4 / 5 were lefties)

Oh man, things can change QUICKLY.

  • Bozo

Kendrick has serious potential still if he can find any form of consistency in his outings. Not just anyone shuts down potent line ups like the Yankees and other teams KK has had success against. He doesn’t need to throw a shutout and he obviously can’t continue to be blown up. He’d be just fine if he went 6-7 innings and only gave up 3-4 runs and if he got hit around once in a while I doubt anyone would be mad.

  • Nick

We get fucking Roy Oswalt and all you guys bitch about is how many fucking right handers we have in our rotation.

Shut the fuck up. Be happy about trading JA Happ at the peak of his value and getting the best #3 in baseball.

  • James Anthony Happ

Nobody’s bitching about the number of right handers. I was just pointing out how different the rotation was less than a year ago.

  • Nick

    Fair enough. Sry man.

  • http://www.twitter.com/swift5648 Swift

You guys can complain all you want; The Phillies just got themselves another Ace to add to their rotation. Yeah… we lost Lee, I get it. I’m one of the biggest sticklers on that deal, still. But there is no sense in bitching about it, while our team gets improved with a guy who’s been pretty much consistently one of the best pitchers in baseball. Did we lose Happ? Sure… but he’s been hurt most of the year, and who know’s; maybe he isn’t as good of a pitcher as we all hope.

Right now, the bats are hitting the ball, and with Oswalt in the Rotation, our team gets a whole lot better. Halladay, Hamels, Oswalt is a scary fucking rotation to contend with in the Playoffs.

  • James Anthony Happ

    I’m leaving tonight, anyway :(

  • ghost of Connie Mack

Would love to have Lee and I hope Oswalt works out as planned.

Phils ownership has been screwing this town around foooooooreeeeeever. Wouldn’t you like to grab those faceless minority owners collectively by the balls and squeeeeeeeeeeze?

  • Joe Blanton

Chances I pitch in the postseason this year?

  • James Anthony Happ

Zero, you fatass! We’re letting the Doc pitch on 3-days rest so go hit the gym in the meantime

  • PhillyPhanInChi

The other thing, if this goes down (trying to get oswaltomistic here) is that this helps our bullpen through the whole -addition by subtraction- thing. Another quality starter means our under worked and overpaid (Baez) bullpen won’t be called on.

@Bozo-I agree on KK. I think he needs one more solid year. I’m interested to see how he pitches today with the added pressure of a win streak and not wanting to fuck it up. The dude is just mental. Which is cool with me for a #5.

  • Big Stein

    @Swift

He has not been one of the best pitchers in baseball for quite some time.

  • James Anthony Happ

Jonathan Villan is the 3rd prospect!

    WHO is this guy?

  • adbphilly

in all this pandamonium i have one thing to say. I miss chan ho park and his asian billy mays beard

  • http://www.twitter.com/swift5648 Swift

Happ, Villar, and Gose for Oswalt.

It’s a fucking steal. Love this move.

  • adbphilly

    wait is chan ho dead?

  • James Anthony Happ

    Fu*king steal!!!!!!!

I wasn’t big on this trade at first.. but if those are the guys we’re giving up, then I’m 100% for it.

Very sad to see myself go, but great win for the Phils. H2O mofos!

  • wheels’ hairpiece

I think Doc was offended last night that the ball hit him in the ass. He stared at it, like he was going to move it into Ryan’s glove with ESP. People are so intimidated by this guy, no one even asked him if he was OK. Q: Doc, you OK
    A: No, I’m Doc Halladay, who’s OK

Post-game conversation in the club house:
Doc: Hey rook, you cost me another shut out and you made me throw two extra pitches. It only happens once…
    Dom: Yessir, sorry Mr. Halladay

  • Shawn James

I really liked Gose to be honest =(.

But then again every blueclaw I like get’s traded.

  • http://www.twitter.com/swift5648 Swift

All reports, it’s a 100% done deal. Roy Oswalt will wear the red pinstripes.

  • Tommy Bunz

Re: everyone talking smack on Oswalt for being a Texan…..He only plays in texas. He is from Mississippi

  • http://www.firerubenamaro.net Phylan

This is unbelievably fucking stupid for the Astros. Highway robbery for the Phillies. Good lord.

  • James Anthony Happ

    Two Roys now.

    R-squared = 1.0

    Perfect fit!

  • Shawn James

Mississippi is def better then Texas in my book.

  • AFN

Stats and logic and whatever else aside, I’m sad to see Happ go. He had a poise that Kendrick will never manage to obtain.

  • http://www.firerubenamaro.net Phylan

Whenever someone tells me “GMs are smarter than they seem, it may not always seem like it, but they know more than some random fan” I’m going to cite this trade and the Dan Haren trade.

  • philajaime

This is a good deal. Not as good as keeping Lee would have been, but that’s the past.

If he pitches till he’s Moyer’s age, we’ll get 16 more decent years out of him.

  • http://www.firerubenamaro.net Phylan

    Two Roys now.

    R-squared = 1.0

    Perfect fit!

    I laughed

  • Tommy Bunz

Yeah I will honestly miss watching Happ pitch. He was all business. I fucking hate watching Kendrick pitch. I bet he watches himself in the mirror while he masturbates.

  • will.H

I Want To Go To The Playoffs With Roy Oswalt

  • Lynniemac

wheels’ hairpiece: Having heard Dom Brown give an interview, you are probably closer to reality with your script than you think.

  • Lynniemac

    will.H: +2010

  • James Anthony Happ

Basically, this was a Happ for Oswalt deal. Gose and Villar are nearly non-factors.

And I reallllyyyyy like Happ and I’m sad to see him go, but my brain is too rational to not realize that this is a great trade for us!

  • Roy Oswalt

Can’t wait to play for you guys. H2O

  • James Anthony Happ

    will.H: 2010 AND 2011

dude’s still here next year..and maybe 2012 (and relatively cheap cause the Stros are sending ELEVEN million bucks)

  • stinkbug

Dubee just took Happ aside for a chat in the outfield. 10 minutes ago via TweetDeck

Well, J.A. Happ is running on the warning track. Maybe no one told him… 22 minutes ago via TweetDeck

Those are from gelb. This is very sad.

  • James Anthony Happ

WILL HE PITCH IN DC TOMORROW?

  • Roy Oswalt

I had to go to Philly because Ruben Amaro Jr has some pretty f’d up pictures of Ed Wade and a couple of midgets down at Spring Training a few years ago.

  • D. Whitmore

There is the Ed Wade I know and love!

  • Shawn James

I wish the stros would send me 11 million bucks.

  • Cliff Lee

    :\

  • Bozo

Oh hey Phylan. Small request if you happen to have it, Franzke/Anderson/Radio calls on D-Brown stuff? I can imagine LA orgasming in the background thinking Brown’s double was a homerun then being like “aww damn”.

  • Shawn James

Ed Wade was out drinking and playing cards till 4am last night

  • http://www.twitter.com/swift5648 Swift

@Roy Oswalt, did RAJ tell you he got them from Scott Graham? Part of the collection that got him fired a while back.

  • Bozo

That sucks about Happ. I’ll be a fan of him and root for him wherever he plays.

  • James Anthony Happ

That is very sad, stinkbug. Poor guy

  • Roy Oswalt

RAJ did tell me he got them from Scott Graham. How did you know that? MMMM Phillies Graham Slam Ice Cream.

  • 85

Never change, Ed Wade. Never. Ever. Change.

  • epiphany1

I don’t like this trade. The guy has a bad back and has had several cortisone shots. These shots weaken the tendons. There is a healthy issue here that Ruben has ignored. Who knows how long he will be healthy. He maybe good for a month or two. But what happens in the postseason? Ruben should have pushed Kendrick instead of Happ. This sucks big time. Second big error by Ruben. The 1st was letting go of the Rangers new ace.

  • ghost of Connie Mack

Do you think there’s a chance that Happ won’t pass a physical?

  • will.H

    james anthony happ

    time to change your name.

  • will.H

epiphany1, imagine how broken down Utley will be in 2012. He just plays too hard. Do you want to trade him?

  • Tyson

    Trade haters: stop hate’n!

How can you look at this and say it’s not a good move? Would you rather have Oswalt or Happ pitching game 3 of each playoff series?

The only downside of this trade has yet to be seen, which is what Ruben will have to do in 2011 regarding team salary. With Oswalt, they’ll have around $140M on the payroll, which is probably higher than they’d like.

However, Ruben HAS to be a spender considering the team is built to win NOW… not 3 years from now. Hell, let’s go after Lee again in free agency next year and lock up the 2011 World Series.

Folks, the Phillies best chance to win is now. Our time is now. We need to do things NOW.

All you haters will begin to feel better come September when we’re back on top of the NL East on our way to another pennant.

  • Mike W

Oswalt flying to DC tonight, getting the start tomorrow via Amy Nelson. Oh, and bonus coverage of Braves/Nats on MLB Network right now.

  • epiphany1

    @Will.H

Oswalt has this problem now. I know people who have had to have cortisone shots because of a bad back. The issue does not resolve itself with the shots and surgery sometimes doesn’t help. All I’m saying is that Ruben should have been more concerned with this issue.

  • will.H

epiphany1, if he can maintain his ace status as he’s done this season.. i dont care if he takes semen shots on his chest.

  • http://twitter.com/Gaze_NJ Gaze_NJ

I’m even willing to give Oswalt the benefit of the doubt and say that 99% of the “reluctancy” to go to Philadelphia was a product of media members grasping at straws.

  • will.H

what im saying is.. most pitchers are suffering from something. At 5 mil a year for 2 years.. did you expect him to be a 22 year old phenom?

  • Milt Thompson

Why do we even need pitching? In case anyone hasn’t noticed, we haven’t hit a solo HR since I got fired. You can’t win without solo shots!

  • ghost of Connie Mack

    @ Tyson

Philly.com reports that “ESPN is reporting the Phillies have asked the Astros to pay a “significant portion” of the $5 million Oswalt is due for the remainder of this season plus the $16 million Oswalt is due in 2011.”

If that’s the case, that will leave room for more salary or more dollars for the owners.

  • PhillyPhanInChi

This deal is a phenomenal steal man. We esentially got 1+ year of Oswalt for 10ml with an option to pick him up for 16. 2+ years of a verified ace at 26 mil. I’m sorry, but there is no way you can not like that. Even if it does mean giving up Happ. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the payroll push 150 next year if we get to the NLCS at least this year.

  • don

This is a huge win for the Phillies.

  • don

I take back some (not all) of the bad things I said about Amaro.

  • will.H

upon making this deal, did Ruben Amaro say to Ed Wade

    “O’Doyle Rules”

  • epiphany1

No. I’m just stating my opinion like everyone else.

  • http://www.firerubenamaro.net Phylan

    @Bozo

I posted the Franzke call for Dom’s first ML hit last night: http://www.tindeck.com/listen/mnpo

I didn’t get the other because the postgame show didn’t play it.

  • Mike W

    Fuck the Braves

  • http://www.goldenphila.com maria

I have to believe the Phillies are still paying Ed Wade. It’s hard to not like this deal. Happ was nice and all, but we got another Roy.

  • MoyerIsMyHero

I will miss Happ. But it sounds like a good deal.

  • philajaime

In 8 of his 12 losses with the Stros, he’s surrendered 3 runs or less. Phils would have won two or three of those.

  • James Anthony Happ

Oh wow. And now Ed Wade swapped with AA Gose for Brett Wallace.

    WTF is going on

    I. cannot. believe. it.

Wallace, the guy who originally got swapped for Taylor… remember…..

  • Lenny Dykstra Financial Whiz Kid

Oswalt’s got dick for style. He’s got no showmanship or personal pizazz. Its like watching a fucking pitching machine.

  • Big Stein

You guys wouldn’t like Oswalt if he was black. Your guys’ racism makes me sick.

  • Racist White Guy

He’s not black? Great, now I have to cancel my order for lower-cased t’s.

  • Dubee Dubee Du

Any reservations I had about this trade earlier have been resolved with only losing Happ and a couple of relatively minor prospects.

11 million other reasons come to mind too.

This is a no brainer. RAJ worked his ass off for this one.

Maria is right, Ed Wade must be working for the Phillies still.

Oswalt’s back problems are all behind him. ;)

  • Eric

Who wants to go to DC tomorrow? Can we have a sleepover at Phylans?

  • Bozo

It’s pretty hard to argue Oswalt’s back vs Happs elbow/forearm.

  • Bozo

That didn’t come out right I don’t think but I’ll hope you guys know what I meant.

  • Adamr14

    I want to like people’s comments….. but I can’t.

    FIX THIS DOMONIC BROWN!

  • Crocks

Another thing that was nice to hear about the trade came from Buster Olney a few minutes ago on ESPN. He heard from other GMs about the final trade: “Wow if we knew the Astros were gonna eat that much of Oswalt’s contract we would’ve offered a much better package!”
Well done RAJ… well done indeed

  • Cole Handsome

I’m glad that Brad Lidge convinced Roy Oswalt to come to Philly. I always assure people that if you overlook the blight, rude people, harsh winters, lousy schools, wage and property taxes, ineffective city government, high crime and traffic, Philadelphia is a wonderful place to be.

  • PhillyPhanInChi

All the Cliff Lee talk around this trade is making me feel like I need to read more about McNabb. If anyone saw the RAJ interview on MLB network you’d feel a whole helluva lot better about it. Fuck Passan and the announcer dude on ESPN who said they screwed up. Trading him was not the screwup you shitheads. It was what we got for him that was shit. And that’s because he HAD to come off the fuckin books.

    I feel better.

  • KruksLeftNut

So the Rube seems to have played his cards well, drew into a Roy-al Brown Flush and has the media gushing today.

Anyone else blacked out of LA/SD on MLBTV see Reynolds’ piece comparing Brown to Strawberry?
Three at bats and the boy has ‘em shootin wads imagining what he’ll do when he “grows into” his body (like the Strawman). Note to Dom: avoid the blow, kid.

Could the Oswalt swindle / Werth redundancy give The Rube enough extra coin to go head to head against the evil ones for Lee this winter?

  • Racist White Guy

Think J.A. will take part in Faith and Family Night? Moreover, can you ever imagine Philly having this? With a Christian band and all? God Bless Texas.

    http://houston.astros.mlb.com/hou/ticketing/faithandfamily.jsp?affiliateId=panel_hou_faithandfamily071410

  • PhillyPhanInChi

    @KLN

There is no way in hell we even come close. They wouldn’t offer him more than the Roy(s)-16ml and won’t offer more than 3 yrs. Lee is going to get 20+ml and 5 years.

If he did, for some reason, come to Phillies though and say he’d play for the same amount that the Roy(s) are getting, he’d be a god here for the rest of his life….

  • will.H

eric im dyin to go to DC tomorrow.. i just can’t pull it. I fucking love DC trips with all the philly knuckleheads

  • Greenman!

fucking tired of hearing about Cliff Lee, he’s gone and not coming back. Get over it, he found a new girl. He’s not going to answer your phone calls and he doesn’t want to see you.

  • Cliff Remember Me Lee

Happ and prospects? PROSPECTS?? From the depleted, then restocked, minor league system??? Exsqueeze me?

Does the unsigned Werth get traded for prospects to restock the minors???

Wait until Oswalt realizes he can’t ask for more money than Roy1, who signed for less than market value.

Me, Roy1, Hamels, and Happ would’ve looked pretty cot damn good, fellas.

  • Roy

yeah i mean i didn’t really want to come to philly but OH MY GOD would that ruben not stop crying and whining trying to convince me to come~! the guy is kinda pathetic being all “oh my god everyone hates me because i’m cole hamels bitch and i got rid of lee for some shitty farm bums” finally i just agreed to shut him up and because cheese steaks are ok and i mean, i’m getting old as shit and i like being on the DList so i figured it can’t be too awful.

  • Dubee Dubee Du

Okay so nobody gets more money than Roy1 and the Phillies can’t outbid the Evil Empire for Lee next year. Then what exactly would the Phillies rotation look like next year?

    Doc
    Cole
    Heavy B
    JA
    KK

Let it go already with the Cliff Lee thing.

  • Dubee Dubee Du

If RAJ doesn’t bring in Roy2 then there might have been room for the crying game you love playing up but the Phillies have most likely now the best rotation in baseball signed for the next 2 years.

Don’t look down cause your girlfriend might have a wienie.

  • KruksLeftNut

I’ll admit a jockrush, hells yes. I just want The Rube to be in a position to offer 18 Big for 3 years and if last summer and fall meant anything to him, he’ll ignore his agent and jump at it rather than take 20+ and live in that big bad city where most of the girls do have wienies.

Besides, Cole’s gonna need someone to keep it real with while The Roys have Men Who Stare at Goats contests and Tubby, well, just stares.

  • Mike P

    @KruksLeftNut

I don’t blame Cliff for going after the Benjamins. He hasn’t had a huge pay day yet (by MLB standards, anyway). He’s going shopping for 6-7 years for about $23M per year, and he’ll probably get it from the Yanks, BoSox, Mets, or some other ambitious team. It’s a tough pill for us to swallow, but I don’t blame him at all for setting his family up for 10 generations.

  • PhillyPhanInChi

    @ Mike P

Yeah, there is no way he gets less than a 110ml deal man. No way. It would be folk hero shit to see him take 16ml over 3, but, as much as I hate to admit this, he has just a good a chance at getting those rings with Boston and NYY as he does with Philly, so the money is outta the question on that one.

The best interview I heard though was Roy’s manager talking about when his best years were. He said that when Clemens and Petite were there with him that he fed off the other two and just went all beastly. He actually thought that during that time, RoyO was by far the better pitcher among the 3. If this is true, then it makes sense about RoyO talking about being apart of a trio with Doc and Cole. That makes my nuts tingle because it shows that he’s one super ass competitive fuck and I could see him and Doc really going at it while Cole does his thing out of the spotlight (which is where he really does his best work, when he’s not relied on as THE man.)

  • Good

Anyone going to the game in DC tonight?? I’ll be there. Section 203 Row E

  • Dubee Dubee Du

The game in DC is going to be a repeat of opening day with all the Phillies fans heading down for the Oswalt debut. Have a great time – I’ll be wearing my green with envy phillies jersey:)

  • susie from jesey

Oswalt was dismal. Is it too late to get the money back ? Oh yeah, and Happ too. Geez he was wretched.
