Pat Burrell’s induction into the University of Miami Hall of Fame

Before Pat Burrell was a #1 draft pick for the Phillies back in the ’98 amateur draft, he was breaking records and winning Golden Spikes and College World Series MVP awards for the University of Miami. Then in 2008, 10 years after his college career ended, Pat was honored for his collegiate efforts by being inducted into the prestigious sports hall of fame located down there in Coral Gables, Florida. 

So why am I bringing all this up now?  I’m glad you asked.

The fine folks who man the umsportshalloffame YouTube account have been tirelessly uploading various intro videos and induction speeches from years past.  Lucky for us, one of the players they just added was Pat Burrell.

First up is his introduction video, and after the jump you can check out his speech.  I have to warn you though, the University of Miami’s sound engineers didn’t too such a good job with the volume, so you’ll more than likely have to turn it all the way up then place your ear to the speakers.

    Still miss the guy. They left out one key accomplishment from his time at UM though. He bedded 25 times more women than Wilt Chamberlain while he was there.

    Don’t quote me on this, but I believe you have to be retired from crushing pussies for at least 4 years before you’re eligible for the crushing pussy HOF. So the only way Pat is getting in there is posthumously.

    This guy ain’t so bad for a college commentator. He gots a good baseball voice.

    For the record, I always root for the college teams in these games, because it’s hysterical when they win. And I love how everyone gets all scared that their team is in trouble when they lose to a college team.

    Here’s cheering for an FSU comeback, and a sprightly “stick it up your ass” to anyone who chooses to give me shit. Have a terrific evening.

    @Matt – I’m not as much annoyed about him announcing the name wrong as I am that Happ insists his name be pronounced “Jay” when it is spelled as the individual letters “J – A”

    That’s stupid and pretentious and sounds like a little kid. If you want people to say Jay, spell Jay.

    Or at least send the commentators pronunciation keys. That’s what I did at my college graduation – wrote a pronunciation key on my name card so the guy announcing everyone wouldn’t fuck it up. It got better though, because the guy was confused as shit about what was written on the card.

    Not really. Sabermetrics are all about prediction, they’re not infallible, just very, very accurate. 95% of the time, if xFIP says your 2.89 ERA is a fluke, then it’s a fluke. Then again, if Happ is in that 5%, I know I, as well all the other stat-minded philly fans, won’t exactly be complaining.

    Haha. I hope Happ doesn’t think SABR friendly people all hate him and think his whole season was luck. That’s not it at all. It’s just that there’s no way he’s an under 3 ERA pitcher – that 2009 performance is not sustainable for him. Put all his components together and he’s a solid fourth starter. What team doesn’t need a solid fourth starter? I like Happ, obviously, and I hope he is one of those rare guys who overcomes his components. It’s just exceedingly unlikely.
