Moyer continues his pity party…

moyermiserable

Well it looks like Grand Pappy Moyer still isn’t too happy with his bullpen assignment, even after throwing six scoreless innings in relief the night before. Here you see Jamie sitting indian style looking all zen like in the bullpen with his chin on his hands in a “woe is me” type manner, continuing his dour and sour routine.

Or maybe I am looking at this completely wrong and the fact is Moyer is just too old and can’t see the game going on when he is sitting on one of those chairs in the back of the pen. That or Jamie just doesn’t take kindly to Tyler Walker sweating profusely.

  • Mr. Bryan

I didn’t want to bring this up in the other post, and rain on all the excitement over Lee, but that behavior is shameful. Uts just gave your team a two run lead, and you sit there like you’re waiting for a bus.

  • http://twitter.com/JayDashDog Jdashdog

Maybe he is waiting for a bus….the casino bus to AC so he can play the slots with the other old folk.

But seriously, Jamie did NOTHING after Chase’s homer. Just sat there wallowing in his own misery and soiled Depends.

  • http://www.thefightins.com meech.one

That’s what meech.two looks like when I tell him he can’t get a new wrestling figure.

  • Mas

Does anyone else secretly wish the filming of “The Pen” went on long enough to witness this?

  • Jamie has Foam Fingers

I completely agree with the Tyler Walker statement. He sweats way more than he has to. I think he has a mister back there.

  • http://www.cranekickchronicles.com Crane Kick

He keeps that act up and he’s gonna need a caseload of Prep H for his keister bumps.

  • Boothe

    What a bitch ass…

  • ill

wow, I am surprised at how fast everyone has turned on him. I think he has a legitimate gripe, especially after going out and pitching 6 scoreless innings, which will be a rare, long relief appearance that only happened because of the rain. I am hoping this lights a fire under him and he is just plotting his return when Pedro falters or blows out his hip. I would definitely want to be in the dugout with the rest of the team rather than out in the pen. He doesn’t fit in with that group.

  • ill

Also, as a guy that enjoys good seats at a ballgame, there are few places worse than the bullpen to watch a game. Seriously, look how far away from the action he is. That is just a terrible view and he didn’t get to high five Utley when he crossed the plate. I would be pissed, too. That’s like taking away someone’s seat behind the dugout and putting them out in Ashburn Alley with the commoners. Harumpff!

  • http://www.thefightins.com meech.one

It’s not like I turned on him, ill, he’s just acting like a fucking baby.

How does a 46-year old man who has been in the league for 20-some odd years think he had a “deal” with Ruben Amaro where he wouldn’t go to the pen. ESPECIALLY when he has the highest ERA among ML starters and plays for a team who’s trying to win a World Series.

Suck it up, Jamie. Go hang out with Shawn Andrews if you wanna be a pussy.

  • zhuzhu

Man and I thought I was a stereotypical Phillies fan, but you guys put me to shame. How quick you all are to forget how well this guy pitched last year. Would you guys say the same about hamels if he got put in the bullpen and acted the same way as jamie, especially since he hasn’t done much better this year. Jamie is almost 47 years old, and has more career wins than the entire rotation put together, not including pedro. If Jamie wants to pout and mope about the bullpen, but still comes out and pitches like he did on Tuesday, let him. He’s earned it.

  • ericvsthem

kinda curious why he wasn’t in the dugout last night as he was unavailable to pitch? or the clubhouse, for that matter?

  • CarlosBeltransexual

Oh, stop. Moyer could act like Chan Ho Park, say something along the lines of “I’ll do whatever it takes to help this team, I believe I’m good enough to come back and start.” or something, rather than crying about it and pretending he had some imaginary deal where he gets to be a starter forever and ever.

  • http://www.thefightins.com meech.one

@zhuzhu: Big difference, man. Jamie is on his way out of the league and Cole is basically just starting.

Just curious, you think Brad Lidge should have carte blanche to blow every save this year based on what he did last year? There comes a point (like, towards the end of August) where you have to focus on what is best for the team heading into the playoffs.

Right now, the best thing for the team is Jamie Moyer not starting and Brad Lidge being limited to the amount of opportunities he has to come in and fuck up a game. Now you can either be a man and accept that, or sit in the bullpen by yourself and throw a pity party.

  • Eric

I think a big part of it is taking him away from the rest of the team and sticking him in the bullpen. He’s the kind of guy who likes hanging over the gate and watching the game…he doesn’t want to watch from center field. Considering he just pitched 6 innings 2 nights ago and probably won’t pitch for another week, why should he still hang out there. He should just chill in the dugout for the next few games. It’s not a far walk to the pen in indeed he needs to go out to warm up.

  • http://twitter.com/JayDashDog Jdashdog

@zhuzhu, aside from the WS Moyer sucked in the playoffs. I’m convinced that if we faced Boston (or pretty much any team with a little more age and experience than TB) Jamie wouldn’t have escaped with a ND there either and probably wouldn’t have gotten this gift of a contract and assumed he had the right to be a starter forever.

  • SD

Awesome tag, love the frown face

  • http://www.TheFightins.com Dash Treyhorn

@zhuzhu I wouldn’t call you, or the other commenters, a stereotypical Phillies fan. I’d just call you “a baseball fan.”

That having been said, I think there is far too much emphasis put on the past accomplishments of players. Whether it’s Moyer or anyone else, the 2009 baseball season is all about the 2009 baseball season. What Moyer did for the Phils last year was fantastic, and no one is disputing that. The issue at hand is that he just hasn’t been that good in 2009. At times, he’s been great, but more often than not, he’s been bad. And when you’re trying to win the World Series for the second straight season, you first have to win the division. And to do that, you need to put the best players out on the field. And right now, Jamie Moyer doesn’t make the cut.

The same can be said for Brad Lidge and Cole Hamels. They were reasons 1 and 1a as to why the Phillies won it all last season, and they aren’t getting a free pass from the fans, and nor should they.

Truthfully, I’ve got no problem with Jamie being upset about it. Is he conducting himself appropriately? Maybe, maybe not. But I think that most folks, when put in that same situation, would react the same way. It’s not just that he was taken out of the rotation, it’s that his job, his livelihood, was taken away from him, and that’s a bitter pill to swallow, especially after 20 years in The Show.

  • themajor

I dunno Iam not upset about moyer being the way he is. maybe its because I just don’t care. but look at it this way. How would you guys feel that after 25 years of doing what you loved and have lived you life realizing that it is most likely over. Id be pretty fucking bummed. Its like the day before you graduate and realize fuck I need to get a real job that day sucks so much. I mean yeah most of us dealt with it but getting crazy drunk, but I am sure there were alot of people who got pretty bummed realizing that its over. give him a few weeks and send him some cheese to go with his wine. no really hes a wine person

  • will.H

    greg dobbs

  • will.H

damn it the major, now i look like an idiot

  • http://pabaseball.blogspot.com gm-carson

Corey and I were watching the game together last night and I saw him in the corner of the bullpen all by himself and said, “Look, there’s Moyer pouting”.

  • ill

I wasn’t directing it at you, meech. This whole thing just reminds me of when Jimmy called the fans frontrunners, only this isn’t something directed at us. Jamie has shown nothing ut class up to this point, but it just feels like a ton of fans are just going sour on him while I think he is still capable of helping us as more than just a bullpen hand.

  • BigMiles

I don’t really think it’s a big deal. He can do whatever he wants as long as he performs well, IMO. If he would have gone out the other night and got lit up and then pouted about it then you have a problem, but that isn’t what happened.

There is a big difference between being upset and being a cancer and throwing your teammates under the bus compared to someone who is just pissed off. Jamie is the latter. I guarantee you he is still helping out Happ, Hamels, etc. I think, quite frankly, he just does not have the “good soldier” attitude left him in at his age and with his experience. If that is upsetting for you I guess you have the right to be annoyed but I just see it as a non-issue as long as it doesn’t affect his on-field performance.

  • will.H

i dont think jamie is out of line for his newly somber personality, but hes never really been upbeat to begin with. I can see how he rubs fans the wrong way these days. In reality, he could really just be reserving himself from showing his frustrating and in doing so seems like a pouty baby. Its so hard to tell. One thing is for sure, everytime hes on the mound he’ll try his best to show Ruben and Charlie they made a mistake. In a way, im glad hes sulking.. if he was upbeat about his demotion we’d scold him for being phoney. Hes being real i suppose, even if hes being a big hairy baby. what would you guys do if you got demoted? id be furiously headbutting shit, thats for sure

  • D. Whitmore

it was an example of classic chase when he tried to knock some sense into moyer with the hr ball.

  • will.H

d.whitmore, jamie thought the ball was mislead to the bullpen

  • Mr. Bryan

    Will, that was great.

  • Tartan69

What I don’t understand is that Moyer is allowing this to tarnish his legacy. He would be beloved in Philadelphia had he retired last year. Or even if he would have retired when they sent him to the pen.

But now, because he’s yet another jock who couldn’t figure out he was finished, he has turned a lot of the fanbase against him. And that’s just sad because he was a key part of making us the WFC.

  • muscles

    Clifton Phifer Lee

  • BigMiles

I disagree Tartan….I mean Phillies fans are pretty fickle but I would be fairly suprised if this is what we all remember about Moyer in 10 years. Seriously, that’s fucked up. I, for one, will remember him for pitching in two straight division clinchers and in a WS win (that should have been his win, fucking ump).

  • Paaaaaay-dro’s hair now

You have to think Tyler Walker has to take a shower right? Wrong.

  • Fightins Newbie

I am willing to give Jamie the benefit of the doubt with this. I feel he is such a competitor that this is how he handles it. I was the same way in little league. In his heart he is still a kid, but has to deal with an older mans limitations. This is simply how he is showing his frustration at this time. He will get over it.

  • Tartan69

@ BigMiles: I agree that it would be fucked up to remember him for that, but to say it won’t happen is naive. *I* won’t judge him solely for this, but you can’t disagree that the minds of Philly fans tend to work this way. For instance, what comes to mind when I mention Ricky Watters? Not his three straight seasons of 1000+ yards rushing and general above-average productivity for the Birds…but his “for who, for what” comment.

  • jimmy james

What the hell? Okay, so the guy’s a little depressed… who among us wouldn’t be if you were a starter and just got sent to the ‘pen?

He’s saying the right things (“let’s just concentrate on the game”) and not being a prick about it. Let’s not throw the guy under the bus just yet.

  • Tom

he shouldnt be upset cause hes been playing a GAME for 20 years while other people have REAL jobs and arent paid millions to play a GAME. he should also realize that pedro at least deserves a chance and jamie was performing the most inconsistently out of any of the other four starters and he only pitches good against the marlins nats and dbacks or any other inexperienced team.

plus hes 47 so he should retire

  • stevejeltz’sgerrycurl

I don’t think that the fans are turning on him. He got a pretty big round of applause when he left the game the other night. Being as he turned in a pretty good performance, I would hope that he realizes that this is where he can help the team the most. He’s been a GOOD (not great) pitcher for a long time, and most definitely deserves some respect, but stats don’t lie. It’s not fair to the rest of the team to trott his ass out there every five days so he can get lit up. That’s the price you pay for pitching for a team that’s in championship contention. You’ll be alright, Pops.

  • Jennifer

If Jamie wants to pout, I have no problem with it. He’s not letting it affect his performance and he’s not talking about it (except for that first statement). I think it’s understandable.

  • Harry

“Man and I thought I was a stereotypical Phillies fan, but you guys put me to shame. How quick you all are to forget how well this guy pitched last year.”

People like yourself piss me off. Who gives a FUCK what he did LAST year. He is sucking THIS year, and thats all that matters.

  • Harry

@zhuzhu I wouldn’t call you, or the other commenters, a stereotypical Phillies fan. I’d just call you “an idiot.”

  • Harry

“If Jamie wants to pout, I have no problem with it. He’s not letting it affect his performance and he’s not talking about it (except for that first statement). I think it’s understandable.”

No, woman. It may not affect his performance but it may be distracting to other players on the team. I don’t have a problem with him being upset, but you do it behind closed doors and not put it out there for everyone to see.

He is also putting himself ahead of the team. Maybe he thinks he is better than Pedro, but truth is, he isn’t. He sucks. They should have never re-signed him, he didn’t deserve that contract.

  • Cola Classic

I am glad that TheFightins.com can be a place where an extremely debatable topic (for example: the war in Iraq, the national healthcare system overhaul, and Jamie Moyer’s attitude about being put in the ‘pen) can be argued, counter-argued, and then towards the end everyone reaches the same conclusion… We love the Phillies. As I mentioned before, I am a big Moyer fan but I have faith that the management of the club is making the best decisions in order to win the next world series. Am I skeptical about Pedro? Yes, of course, but he’s got to be in there for a reason. If the opportunity doesn’t present itself to win the world series, then I say we criticize management for making the bad decisions. The players are just going out there to play the game, and it is their love of the game that makes them emotional about it – as in this case.

  • Gaze

What makes Philadelphia sports fans great is that they live in the present rather than living in the past. While Yankees fans and Steelers fans and Lakers fans, etc will bring their multiple championships up in conversation, Philadelphia fans focus their arguments on near present performance. That said, Jamie Moyer, Cole Hamels, Jimmy Rollins and anyone else who performs poorly DOES NOT get a free pass to act like a douche based on what they did in the past.

  • Harry

Gaze – i’m sure Philadelphia fans would bring thier recent wins up too if we actually had any.

  • http://genericshow.com GenericFanGroup

The truth is this is a regular season issue because once we get to the playoffs Jamie and Pedro will both be sitting out because The Phillies will rock a 4 man rotation of Lee, Hamels, Blanton and Happ.

  • Gonzo

It’s possible Jamie has just realized that his career is coming to an end. It can’t be easy for him.

  • JB

If being “sour and dour” doesn’t have an impact on Jamie’s performance on the field, he can “pout” for the rest of the season.

  • hmm?

I’m gonna agree that he’s just staying away from Walker… dude’s like a fountain of sweat.

  • Sonya SotoMoyer

i think all he wants is his own birdland T

  • j_romes

    can’t dispute the wise latina

  • BigMiles

Harry you gotta chill out man. It “may be distracting” to others? Cmon dude. This team has been on fire since the Jamie demotion so I really doubt anyone is distracted. And if he was putting himself ahead of the team he would have demanded a trade or a release so that he could pitch elsewhere.

“Who gives a FUCK what he did last year. He is sucking THIS year.” So I guess you would just move out Hamels as well, right Harry? As others have mentioned, its dumb to just give players extra chances over and over because of things they did in the past. But to just completely throw out all the positives of a player’s career here is stupid. I’m living in the moment with this Phils team but I’ll be damned if someone thinks it’s not ok for me to be nostalgic about last year’s team.

And real classy with the “No, woman.” comment, Harry. Stuff like that always makes people want to listen to what you have to say.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gabriellejuliet Gabrielle

when jroll wasn’t performing up to par, he didn’t bitch when he got benched. he knew he wasn’t contributing 100% and rode the pine quietly. moyer should do the same.

  • http://genericshow.com GenericFanGroup

The Birdland shirt should look like cover of About Schmidt with Moyer as the Nicolson character

    http://www.imdb.com/media/rm310419200/tt0257360

  • http://www.myspace.com/gabriellejuliet Gabrielle

    lol@generic i’d buy it.

  • Harry

Big Miles – you’re right, I initially over-reacted. It just pisses me off because Moyer is suppose to be this great guy who teaches the young guys how to act like a big leaguer and then he acts like a baby as soon as he is put in the pen.

“Who gives a FUCK what he did last year. He is sucking THIS year.” So I guess you would just move out Hamels as well, right Harry?

Are you actually comparing Cole Hamels to Jamie Moyer? I sure as hell hope not. Moyer is an old bum who has been one of the league worst starters this season.

Re: the woman comment, I stand my ground on that since they are the inferior gender.

  • PhilaDLJ

Jamie….you’re in the bullpen now. GET. THE FUCK. OVER IT.

At your age, you’re lucky to be pitching in the Major Leagues. Hell, you’re lucky to be pitching. HELL, you’re lucky to be WALKING AND RUNNING.

Your body language and attitude sucks. You’re setting a bad example for kids and younger players (in other words, ALL players.)

Get out there and tell the people the right things. If you can’t have fun pitching out of the bullpen, then RETIRE.

Because the Fightins have FUN when they’re playing…even if they’re down 8-1.

If this is all a misunderstanding, then I apologize, but voice your opinion clearly.

We still need you. But we don’t need the sass or the sourpussness. Quit Albert Belle’n.

  • Jennifer

    @Harry
Wow, just wow. I think the other Phillies are professional enough that Jamie’s sitting quietly in the bullpen is not going to “distract” them.
(Sorry, I’m a few comments behind the discussion.)

    @GenericFanGroup
    Thank you. And I agree.

  • Gonzo

Jennifer, what are you cooking for dinner tonight? And I hope you got the laundry done.

    /Harry’d

  • http://genericshow.com GenericFanGroup

is Harry actually Howard Eskin?….no way he would be too busy talking about the Eagles to talk about the Phillies

  • NG

i feel bad for Moyer, but the dude is getting old and is kind of losing his grip…and i mean kind of as in starting to…he hasnt lost it yet, but its close to calling it quits for him.

i love him to death and i hate to see him go…but when you gotta go, you gotta go

i love you MOYER! keep doing your thing! you’ll get in there once in a while to prove yourself like you did tuesday night

  • Lynniemac

While I agree that Jamie’s coming to the conclusion that his career might be ending (and really, at 46 should it be a surprise?) is certainly something that could be depressing him, perhaps he should consider the following: he’s had a 23 year career (which, considering his fastball is slower than other pitchers’ changeups is saying something), he is a World F. Champion (in practically his backyard), through last year he has made over $68 million to play baseball, and he is currently making $6.5 million and is playing on a team that is leading the division (albeit in a role he wouldn’t choose).

If this IS his swansong, it’s not a particularly bad way to go out.

  • WB-Tony

Hey, if I got told I was getting demoted from a job I was doing for 20+ years for some guy just showing up on the job, I’d be pissed too. So as long as this is only a distraction for us, the fans, I could give two flying shits how he looks in the pen.

    @Gaze
No, most reasonable Steelers fans pride themselves on the fact that we are relevant year in, year out, as both the Eagles and Steelers have been. I guess I’m not in the right area of the state for the Eagles/Steelers hatred…

  • Lynniemac

@WB-Tony: I’d be pissed too, though I hope I’d have the class and professionalism not to pout about it. And I realize that Pedro is certainly not the Pedro of old anymore, but I don’t think I’d classify him as “some guy just showing up on the job” either.

  • WB-Tony

    @Lynniemac
Yeah, I know, and I really hope Pedro doesn’t end up “some guy just showing up on the job.” My point was that about 20% of people would pull a T.O. and blow things out of proportion, 40% would do what Jamie’s doing right now, and the other 20% would take it with class. I’m just not going to knock him for doing what he’s doing right now. If it continues through September, well, then my stance changes.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gabriellejuliet Gabrielle

    i wanna get /Harry’d.

  • WB-Tony

lol, forgive my math everyone, long day at work with no sleep.

  • TC

    70! Moyer’s age!

  • TC

brett myers took a demotion TO THE MINORS with class. and he doesn’t do much of anything with class. just sayin.

  • Cola Classic

I bet the last 20% couldn’t even do the math, right?

  • JB

Moyer has yet to do anything classless. He commented after his demotion, and has been relatively quiet since then. The only bitching I’ve seen is from fans who seem to believe they know exactly what he’s thinking/feeling based on the look on his face while he’s sitting in the pen/walking off the field/having a bowel movement/etc.

  • Gonzo

Gabrielle, my balls arent going to lick themselves.

    /Harry’d

  • J-D

Jamie should just be happy he isn’t a Met

  • BigMiles

TC that isn’t necessarily accurate….I just got done reading J. Stark’s book about last year’s team and apparently the team made it quite clear to Myers that he was out of the rotation and he could choose to respond however he wanted to. He initially told them no way and then softened his stance when they said they would only keep him there for like 20 days (to keep tenure).

I still think your point stands, but Brett didn’t exactly accept the assignment graciously.

  • BigMiles

Personally I just think that the fact that there are almost 80 comments on this post shows that Phils fans in general have turned on Moyer since the beginning of the season and are looking for ways to critique him. Pedro has still yet to do anything to prove he is a significant upgrade over Moyer, but everyone sees to believe wholeheartedly that is the case. I’m not saying that he won’t eventually prove himself to be an upgrade….but I just think everyone has had it out for Jamie since he pitched poorly in April and May.

  • TC

regardless of how brett took it behind closed doors, we didn’t see this type reaction outwardly. he said the right things and acted correctly. granted jamie has flown off the handle. it just seems a little off for a guy of his character.

JB, jamie’s actions have been a little off. you gotta admit that much at least.

  • WB-Tony

    @Cola Classic
    Correct.

  • TC

whatever. i don’t care if jamie set the bullpen on fire and they had to use tyler walker’s sweat to put out the flames. drive the fish back to like 8 or 9 GB. then make the push for November. LET’S GO!!!!!

Cliff Lee is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.

  • JB

TC: Off, yes, of course. But so long as he continues to go out and do his job, and we don’t see him doing situps for CNN in his driveway, or starting locker room brawls with Matt Stairs, it really shouldn’t matter.

  • http://www.thefightins.com Chris

Wow this post went kinda crazy. Let me specify my take. I am not posting this and complaining. I just saw Moyer looking a little sad in the bullpen, or so I thought.

  • Jdashdog

Just don’t steal rubbers from the CVS on 18th and Chestnut. They WILL prosecute to the fullest extent of the law

  • jms

Why is everyone attacking Moyer? He’s always been stoic. Give the man a break. He’s been doing this job since 1986 and I’m sure his self-worth or whatever is in the gutter right now. He pitched 6 shut-out innings. Let him sulk in peace and have some respect.

  • BigMiles

@Watrick….I really have to resist not throwing my TV out the window nowadays when that commercial comes on. It’s the worst part about watching the Phils, not counting when Lidge is in or when Bruntlett bats.

  • RoboCop

@Fink I doubt it Fink.. most likely he was a starting pitcher twice and won both games in the World Series. He is a legendary Yankee-killer!

@negative Phillie fans.. Look at the guys record.. he does not deserve such disrespect.. Its good for him to sit, as witnessed by the 6 shutout innings, but lay off the guy.. every pitcher has less than good season now and again.. see it in the long perspective and be also glad that you have him to back up Pedro, cause he is gonna be whining about backaches and toothaches and stiff shoulder and sore arm etc etc.. we all know his yap.

@agist Phillie fans.. the jokes about Depends and laxatives are disgusting and only show how small you minds are.. grow up!

@RoboCop: Sorry I couldn’t understand what you were saying. Can you put your teeth back in, old man?

@RoboCop, English as a second language?

  • Kruks left nut

I pitched against Moyer in Perky Valley Twilight league 30 years ago he was always a little twarp
a couple of years ago i went to phillies dream week and they clocked me @86 mph ,and i had a lot of fun, maybe the little pussy should just have some fun.anyhow i am better looking and throw harder and probly fuck better, but , he’s a millonaire,so spot the asshole!

    @RoboCop:
“Look at the guys record.. he does not deserve such disrespect”

I’ve looked at the guy’s record. I suppose you will point out that he has the most wins this year. I would like to point out that he also has the most losses and his ERA and WHIP are the highest. If demoting him (temporarily – for I do believe it’s temporary because I’m not sure what anyone can realistically expect from Pedro) is disrespectful, what would showing him respect be? Allowing him to stay in the rotation regardless of performance simply because he’s been around so long? I suppose you’d demote J.A. Happ because he’s the youngest, despite the fact that his ERA is HALF of what Moyer’s is.

    That would be reverse ageism.
