I’m just a little anxious of the fact that Cole has been working on two pitches this spring, rather than trying to master one.
watrick, improving that curve would be like spraying perfume on a piece of crap. although i think you’re talking about his fastball which is true, a very underrated pitch at many levels of play.
It’s kinda weird to act like his curveball is a big huge problem or something. He had 1 fine and 2 great seasons prior to 2009 using it as the token third pitch – his fastball and changeup combination is so undeniably dominant that it was simply a way to switch things up on the hitter, and that was fine. I don’t mind him developing a cutter or improving his curve or whatever, since it certainly can’t hurt, but let’s not pretend we can blame his league average AHEM I MEAN TOTALLY TERRIBLE 2009 on his curveball.
The curve was certainly not the only reason for Cole’s ’09 problems, but it did indeed factor in there a bit.
At any rate I am very happy to see Cole took the right attitude this offseason, between mental preparation and working on some good new pitches that should hopefully help him be more dominant than ever before.
I hope to see both of them take their skirts off this year.
