Charlie Manuel Hints At The Possibility Of A Pat Burrell Return
Posted by meech.one at 8:36 am ET 17 Comments

UPDATE: It’s over. Just as I was about to hit ‘Publish’ on this post, Scott Lauber went ahead and ruined my day by reporting the Phillies have come to an agreement with Raul Ibanez on a 3-year deal worth around $30 million. The Pat Burrell era is officially over in Philadelphia.

*sniff, sniff*

***

As the Phillies frantically search for a Pat Burrell replacement, Charlie Manuel shared his thoughts about the subject with some reporters yesterday at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.

His opinion? BRING BACK THE BAT!!!

Well, he says the Phillies should at least think about it. (Thanks for the quotes, Paul Hagen)

“Our situation right now, we’re still trying to find what we’re going to do in leftfield and for a righthanded hitter. We need a righthanded bat, but we’re not talking about just any righthanded bat. We need a good righthanded bat. What Burrell brought to the table, he could hit 30 homers and had a high on-base percentage. And if you look at the runs that the guys scored after replacing him [as pinch-runners] he could score 100 runs a year. Any way you look at it, his production was still very big.”

“When I think of his good points versus his [negatives] speedwise, the more I look at it and I see what’s out there… I don’t see why we wouldn’t want him back,” the manager said. “I haven’t seen a guy that’s proven. We need somebody who can hit, who can put up some numbers for us.”

I’d like to believe in that little pea-brained head of mine that good ol’ Number 5 will be patrolling left field come Opening Night. I mean, if Manny Ramirez is having a hard time finding a suitor, can’t somebody convince Pat to re-sign for nice 2-year contract somewhere in the neighborhood of $17-18 million? Am I delusional?

Until then…

BRING BACK THE BAT!!!

  1. Matt says:

not any more. phils signed ibanez to a 3 year 30 million dollar deal.

  2. meech.one says:

Didn’t you read my goddamn update!? It wasn’t even an update either, I had it in the original post.

    Fuck Raul Ibanez.

  3. The Juggernaut says:

I guess the Phils weren’t going to spend 16-17 million a year who is slow, streaky, and you have to pull in the 7th for defense??? Don’t get me wrong I liked Pat but his asking price was obviously too high. He’s better suited for the DH now anyway, watching him run the bases was painful and you never know after he got his contract he might have just went back to old pat STRIKEOUT LOOKING. God that pissed me off.

  4. Matt says:

my bad dawg, fuck me. i read the first part, and knowing pat the bat was gone got the best of me. will you think less of me if i tell you i’m crying openly?

    forgive me, meech. please?

  5. meg says:

Bad move! And Ibanez is older too. Should have listened to Charlie and brought back the Bat!

  6. meech.one says:

Don’t mind me, Matt. I’m just a little upset, that’s all.

  7. Beth says:

I’m crying with you, Meech. This is a sad day. I have to go now because my tears are ruining the keyboard.

  8. Matt says:

i knew it was coming, but it’s still a sad day when the pat burrell era ends. i’ll miss pat the bat, and cheer him on for the remainder of his career.

  9. myers' admirers says:

I’ll miss Elvis, but definitely not his 1,273 career strikeouts

  10. Joe says:

When Pat eventually does go to another team i look forward to a “best of pat burrell post”

  11. Hey meech, didn’t see the Phils signed Ibanez, what’s wrong with you? … Kidding. Really, we’re all gonna mist Burrell, but even you must admit, he lost a little luster when he got hitched. Who doesn’t love seeing Pat the Bat wasted at the Bar around a flurry of whorish/hot females?

  12. K Dub says:

I think it’s worth at least $20 Million to keep that Party Animal womanizer in Philly. If he is traded he will be missed dearly. Sleep well sweet prince. no homo

  13. Lynniemac says:

To the person who said the Bat’s asking price was too high: did anyone ever say what his asking price was? I was under the impression it was more about years than money.

3 years/$30 million to someone who’s 4 years older and doesn’t have as much power. Did they ever even offer Pat a third year?

    I hate Ruben Amaro.

  14. JaysonWerthHisWeightInGold says:

Pfft… I broke this story at 8:22 in the comments section of the Contest Winners post.

Pat will be missed but the only downside I see with Ibanez is the fact that he’s a lefty. His BA over the last 3 years is an improvement over the Bat. I’ve gotta assume that he moves into the 2 spot in the lineup?

    1 J-Roll
    2 Ibanez
    3 Chutley
    4 Big Brown
    5 Jay Werth
    6 Phlyin Hawaiian
    7 Pete Happy
    8 Chooch
    9 (pitcher)

  15. joe says:

pete happy? i’ve never heard that one before. I just usually call feliz “Pedro Fellaz” or just “Fellaz”

reason #434,212,313 why i like pat better than ibanez: Pat has a nickname, Raul doesn’t.

  16. GP says:

    raul “edward james olmos” ibanez

  17. FreddiePickles says:

    Reporter:”How’s Raul’s English?”
Ibanez: “Pretty good, I was born in Miami.”
