It seems as though the Phillies have switched their #1 priority in the Winter Meetings from acquiring Mark DeRosa to unloading the shitastic Adam Eaton. Here’s the scoop from Gerry Fraley via Ken Rosensquirrel’s blog:
Philadelphia is trying to give away underachieving right-hander Adam Eaton.
The Phillies will deal Eaton to any team that will take on $1 million of the $9 million he is due for the final guaranteed season of a three-year contract. The Phillies want nothing in return.
On top of the $8 million discount any team would recieve for Eaton’s services, the Phillies are also offering a mail-in $200,000 rebate. Sorry — no returns, exhanges, or refunds.

This is right up there with paying the Marlins to take Wes Helms off our hands.
Ouch, this is a hell of a blowout sale. Philly is willing to eat $8 million of his contract? That’s gonna hurt in the morning – but at least it’s a way to excise a cancer we need to remove.
Adam Eaton’s ridiculous contract makes him the richest chipmunk since Alvin.
Let Gillick pay him the one million to mow his lawn all summer.
True story: A week before we won the NL East my dad I and I went early to watch BP and after the Phils were finishing up some of the Braves came out and Adam Eaton went from Brave to Brave looking up to no good. My dad and I joked he was trying to broker his own deal for next year.
Wow. Just wow. Untypical move of the usually cheap Phils.
This is one of those rare occasions when I can actually understand how the NFL model of contracts make sense.
