Marco Scutaro catches the Phillies napping; steals second on a walk
Posted by at 11:05 pm ET 38 Comments

I’d like to think of myself as a fairly level-headed Phillies fan.  I completely understand that there is always the possibility of a team like the Toronto Blue Jays heading into The Bank and pulling off the unexpected sweep — this type of thing just happens during a 162-game season.  Does it hurt worse because former Phillies Scott Rolen and Rod Barajas were instrumental contributors to that sweep?  Of course it does.

But do you wanna know what’s even worse than that?  When your team is just flat-out lazy.

Case in point: Joe Blanton walks Marco Scutaro to start the third inning.  While jogging to first, the Blue Jays leadoff man notices Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley yukking it up in the field.  Realizing the middle of the Phillies infield is too engrossed in conversation to actually make a play at second, Scutaro strolls right past first base and darts to second before Jimmy and Chase could finish their discussion.  Have a look-see:

This is a really awesome play, as shitty as it was. I love watching him check out every single infielder, followed by his glance at Blanton to see what he was doing, where the ball was. Heads-up play. This guy should be a Phillie.

    boo

Didn’t he score in that inning? Which means that had he not, we could’ve watched more extra innings? Or, you know, prevented other stupid plays like this and actually win a game in 9?

  • PhiPhan5648

Was a decent play by Scutaro… he earned that base, and the PHILLIES earned today’s loss. Sad, but true. When Little League shit like this goes down, it really should be a smack upside their collective heads, to get back into the fucking game.

  • http://www.thefightins.com How do you spell retard?

    .gifted

Ahhh, I see what ya did there.

That play is just damned embarrassing. In a way, though, it sums up the series: The Phillies have been caught napping all week.

On a side note, I see that Scutaro’s ideas haven’t yet switched to the new energy-saving 60-watt bulbs.

  • PhiPhan5648

@Chams. Good point. That Son of a Bitch, he’s killing the Planet!

  • http://www.twitter.com/underthebridge1 Walklett

I used to love doing this in Little League.

  • Gaze

If something similar happened in any other walk of life, someone would be fired.

I have two games this weekend and I assure you I will have my “boos” ready. The free pass is officially over.

  • PhiPhan5648

    @Walklett, So did I.

@Gaze, make sure you get the rest of your seating section into it as well.

  • Gaze

Section 145, row 4… Look for the guy Booing in a Rauuuuul T tomorrow.

  • PhiPhan5648

Will do… hopefully the PHILS will put on a whooping, and I won’t have to look for you Booing.

  • Gonzo

When I played in little leaguefor NEO, Max Meyers perfected this method of stealing after a walk. Had to call time out after every walk. I played against Scott Hunter, who was drafted by the Mets. He was traded to the Dodgers for Brett Butler, yet never made it to the majors.

  • http://phillieslongdrive.wordpress.com/ Tug Haines

Brett Butler is a member of the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Athletic Hall of Fame, along with Greg Legg.

  • Jocksniffer

    Embarrassing… but God-damn, do I love pie.

  • Greg

Maybe all Phillies fans should start wearing the opposing team’s gear to the ballpark in hopes that the Phillies will think they are on the road.

  • will.H

seems when the phils are losing, their mind gets stuck on offense and their defense has started to lack.

  • Phucking Disgrace

their offense doesn’t seem to be doing enough once they start losing either…if this play and the “double” scott rolen took from mayberry did not happen, we would have won this game in 9 innings.

  • Phucking Disgrace

which in itself would seem like a mini-miracle these days

  • will.H

well im not going to argue that the offense has been dynamic, but they did come back twice in the same game. the pitching didnt hold up, eveyrtime they got a lead or tied it, the very next inning the pitching let the jays gain ground or take the lead.

  • SteveJeltz’sGerryCurl

I bet Barajas falls in the shower today, and breaks his leg. Rolen will also announce that he’s going through with the sex change that Bo told him to get years ago.

If the Phils play this bad against the O’s, it’s going to totally ruin my weekend.

  • Shawn

I am sure that JRoll and Ut were talking strategy while that prick was stealing second. Right?

  • Tim

I hate to see it come from an opposing team, but that is really an awesome play, and I’ve got to hand it to Scutaro. It reminded me of when Werth caught the Dodgers napping and stole home. Scutaro busted his ass and had a great series. Watching the Blue Jays hustle and create plays reminded me of those bygone days of how the Phils used to play, oh, about a week or two again. Of course, I’m sure the Phils will get back into that type of play, that’s just the kind of team they are. I’d also love to see the Blue Jays keep playing hard like this and knock off those stupid Red Sox and Yankees with their horrid fan bases.

that’s much lazier than a links post

  • http://pabaseball.blogspot.com gm-carson

Scutaro is now a favorite non-Phillie of mine. That was an awesome play.

  • Gonzo

Scutaro is a scrappy ball player. He ranks up there with the Ecksteins of the league.

  • Jay

Why didn’t everyone at CBP boo the crap out of the Phils for this???????? If this was last year we would still be booing right now.

  • Shaggy

“Scutaro ranks up there with the Ecksteins of the league.” The David Eckstein who has played for four teams in the past 3 years? Is that a compliment? David Eckstein is not good, but because of one postseason, the media thinks he’s fantastic. Hey, did you know Darin Erstad was a punter? That makes him a good baseball player, right?

  • http://www.thefightins.com meech.one

Shaggy, I think it was a joke.

  • PhiPhan5648

@Gonzo: NEO? NEO? BOOOOOOOOO! Crispin Bitches!

  • Jese

this is from a Jays fan. Scutaro has been doing aggressive base running all year, but to catch the world champs asleep like that, sorry Phiilies fans, but that is down right embarrassing to see them give up a stolen base like that. Heads up baseball by Scutaro.

  • http://www.bluejayhunter.com Ian

Great job on the animated gif, guys! Now I can relive this play over and over and over. The Jays commentators were also stunned by the play – they said it was like nothing they had ever seen before. I didn’t even know it was possible. Maybe the Phils will try it against the Jays next week in Toronto!

  • http://phillieslongdrive.wordpress.com/ Tug Haines

    @Jese

this is from a Phils fan. 30 other people posted comments before you, all saying what you just came cheerleading in here to say. Not very heads-up commenting by Jese.

Scutaro’s nickname during his Oakland days was, I shit you not, The Magical Man-Elf. Mostly for his knack of clutch hitting, which was also just about the only time he did any hitting out there. Having a hell of a year for the Jays, though; would love to see him make the All-Star Game on general principles.

  • http://www.phoulballz.com Jay Ballz

This is the worst mental slacking I’ve ever seen in a major league game. The Phils should be ashamed.

  • Glenn Reimche

Right Shaggy, Eckstein is no good. He just happened to play the toughest defensive position and hit .293 in 152 games in 2002 on a team that coincidentally won the World Series. By fluke he hit .292 in 2006 and was the World Series MVP on a team that through pure luck took out the Tigers in 5 games. It’s only through the craziest luck and complete lack of skill that he’s an all-star career .293 hitter with a .979 fielding percentage.

  • Gnic

    David Eckstein Career Stats
    AVG .283
    OPS .709
    HR 33

Those are terrible numbers. The myth that Eckstein was a great player must die.

  • Jordan

I’m not even gonna say that david eckstein is a bad player, but why the fuck do people always bring his name up when they talk about “tough, hard-working players that hustle.” really? you can’t name any “scrappy” player better than david eckstein? how about chase utley? i guess what people really mean is a “scrappy player with shitty numbers”
