July 21 Game Recap: Cardinals 5, Phillies 1
Posted by at 11:27 pm ET 377 Comments

Joe Blanton allowed four runs in seven plus innings, and the offense was held in check again, as the Phillies dropped their third game in a row to the St. Louis Cardinals to drop to 48-45 on the season.

While the game didn’t end until Greg Dobbs flied out in the top of the ninth inning, it was over long before that, due to a serious of curious moves from Charlie Manuel that has become a disturbing trend as of late.

It was in the top of the seventh inning, the score was tied at one apiece, and Carlos Ruiz worked a walk off St. Louis starter Jamie Garcia to load the bases. Joe Blanton, who had allowed one run over six innings, was due up. And with two outs, Charlie made the curious decision of letting his pitcher hit instead of opting for a pinch-hitter.

Blanton struck out on three pitches.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Cardinals needed only one pitch to make Charlie regret his mistake, when Matt Holliday hit the first offering of the inning over the left field wall to give the Cards the lead, which they would not relinquish.

It was an outcome that everyone saw coming, and quite frankly, one that the Phillies deserved.

Despite how well Blanton was pitching at that point in the game, a pinch hitter would have significantly increased the team’s chances of taking the lead. Of course, this speaks to the much larger issue of how much Charlie does not trust his bench or his bullpen.

But all that aside, the Phillies were in position to take the lead, and they failed to even put themselves in a position to take advantage. The Cardinals jumped on that missed opportunity and never looked back, as they added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth, also off Blanton, who was inexplicably sent out to start the inning.

And like I said on Twitter: The “L” shouldn’t be charged to Joe Blanton, but to Charlie Manuel.

Might as well be a season recap.

  • Billig

Why Blanton was allowed to hit is beyond me.

  • J

Worst managing of the entire year tonight. I’m still sitting here stumped. The fact that they made the mistake of not taking him out of the game not just once, but twice is something I will NEVER understand.

  • James Anthony Happ

    UNBE-LEE-VABLE

  • 85

Same thing he did to Blanton in the Sunday start in Pittsburgh. Joe had pitched well, but Charlie left him out there an inning too long, and crack-crack-crack and a bloop off Contreras later and it was yet another loss.

Looking more and more like it’s just not going to happen this year… hate saying that.

  • Wayne

If we had Cliff Lee, Chollie would have pinch hit for Blanton in the 7th

  • MOAB

u-g-l-y, you ain’t got no alibi! you ugly! hey! hey! you ugly!

  • will.H

nah Wayne if we had half a bullpen he’d have pinch hit for blanton. 2 outs bases loaded top of 7 with the bases loaded. meh

  • bigmyc

Chicken or the egg? Cholly > the team or the team > Cholly?

Maybe it’s time the phans really let these guys know what a “boo” sounds like. There ought to be an organized “booing” during the introductions next time they are at home. No epithets, no “yer mom’s..”, not even words. Just a solid, drenching “boo.”

Of course, delay this indefinitely if they begin winning a little by the time they get back to CBP.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

The whole pinch hitting for Blanton should be a non-issue.

The Phillies scored ONE RUN again.

  • Andrea

But Victorino doesn’t want us to boo. We have to “get behind them” and “give them support”. We “can’t forget what they’ve done the past few years”. Don’t want to be those “front-runners”, ya know.

  • will.H

does anyone else treat the phillies like your job. It’s aggrivating but we have no choice.. we keep coming back because we need the fix/money. As much as I love the phils, 2010 is terribly nostalgic. Brings me back to the old days when a regular season walkoff was my World Series.

  • Bozo

Ross Gload has played 105 carer games in the OF and has made a very small amount of errors(18 total for his career at all positions). He’s barely had any playing time and who knows, maybe he steps up and gets a hit. I’d rather have him in the lineup than Ben Francisco. Or another option would be try to have Gload play 2nd or 3rd.

Small sample sizes etc but here

Gload has a .360 batting average in 7 starts this season

2 outs with RISP – .333 with 7RBI this season

In 277 career at-bats vs lefties he is hitting .300 with 3HR and 41RBI

Someone needs to be given a chance to step up, only Ryan Howard is doing any damage offensively(and I agree with Sarge that Howard should be hitting 3rd)

  • Tyson

Cot dammit Cholly. As Fat Blanton stepped to the plate with the GAME TIED AT 1 AND BASES LOADED WITH 2 OUT, I was seriously hoping it was an overplayed diversion… until the lumberjack took a hack at that first pitch.

Unless something changes, and quick, we’re looking at a sub-.500 team.

  • J

@ will.H: I think of the Phils as one of those TV shows that used to be awesome but went downhill as the seasons went on. And now it sucks so much but for some reason you can’t look away and you feel obligated to keep watching because it was once so good.

  • Bozo

And Gload barely strikes out to add onto that. 190 SO in 1,638 PA and only like 4 this year.

  • http://twitter.com/freddie_the_k Freddie the K

    Booooooooooooooooooooooo!
Can’t win too many games if score one run.
Can’t win games if your pitching staff falls apart mid-game. Regardless of who is at fault.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

J just described Family Guy to me. SPOT-ON definition…….

  • CarlosBeltransexual

What a recap! Of all the reliable, consistent pinch-hitters, I’m amazed that Charlie left Blanton hit. Fuck this miserable, worthless bench.

  • Dubee Dubee Du

Cliff Lee would have pinch hit for Blanton.
Cliff Lee would have hit a grand salami.
Cliff Lee would have stayed in as the set up man.
Cliff Lee would have stayed in to close.
Cliff Lee would have been the star of the game. Cliff Lee would have creampied Cliff Lee.
Cliff Lee would start at 2nd base and bat third in games he’s not pitching.
    Stay Cliff Lee my friend.

  • Stewie Griffin

When I’m done with this poor excuse of a female parental unit I’m coming for you TonyisDynamic!
    TonyisDynamic indeed!

  • Jupiter’s Rings

Hey remember when Stay Puft hit a home run in the 08 WFS and when the reporters asked him what happened he said “I just closed my eyes and swung”? Someone tell Charlie that’ll probably never happen again.

  • PhillyPhanInChi

Anyone who says the Phillies are a bad team is a joke. They’re a great team that’s playing about as poorly as they can play. I feel like this whole season is needed though. These guys need to go through this to remember what it’s like to suck ass. It will separate the men from the boys this year and come next season everyone will know who’s going to quit, and who’s going to fight. Halladay, Hamels, Polonco, Howard and Ruiz are all out there fighting. Rollins is being Rollins, Utz is injured and Shane, Werth and Ibanez are all question marks.

I’m actually going to say that Blanton is fighting too. Tonight wasn’t his fault other than him not telling Cholly to pull him, and for that reason alone, he’s fighting. Moyer is a gamer. Contreras works harder than it looks. I really think Lidge has come a long way too. Jury is still out on Madson and we haven’t seen enough of Durbin or Herndon really.

I like this team. I like this teams chances. I just like them more when they’re all in sync….

  • Phils Phan

    @ Dubee Dubee Du:

[Cliff Lee would have creampied Cliff Lee.]

    Dirty.

  • Bozo

I think Herndon has potential, but he isn’t MLB ready.

BY THE WAY EVERYONE, THANKS FOR READING ALL MY RESEARCH ON ROSS GLOAD THAT TOOK ME AROUND 10 MINUTES TO COMPILE!

  • Bozo

Oliver Perez is pitching for the Mets in the Bottom of the 12th. D-Backs with 2 on no out

  • Greenman!

    did we trade Werth yet?

  • Brandon

@Bozo, You know no one reads anything more than 6 lines…

But you did make good points. Gload has done well enough to earn more chances

  • Bozo

Haha, probably Brandon. There were a few Walls of Text I skipped in the past few threads xD.

Oliver Perez escaped a bases loaded jam so they are going to the 13th.

  • Greenman!

not trying to hate on Werth but the team needs a serious shake up, he is the only phool worth trading that hasn’t been hurt and is slumping terribly. I know he will be ZOMG awesome again but we need something to rid this stagnant pool of poop.

  • del

I am afraid to trade Werth. You look at the crap we got for Lee, what was given up for Halladay. I can only imagine what he will snag for Werth.

IMHO Charlie has gotten too much of a pass this season. Although that crap he pulled tonight might have been his way of telling the FO…hey you guys gave me shit for a bench…again.

  • Italian Chef

    BERTOLLI!

  • ScottRuffcorn

I can’t blame Charlie for thinking he has a better shot with homerun Joe with the bases chucked than with anyone on his bench. This just goes to show they need help, bad! It’s more than Werth being a hole in the lineup. (you can also pretty much say that about Ibanez and Victorino as well, Rollins isn’t far behind) Who’s he going to put up there against a lefthander anyways with Francisco already in the game? Your only option is Ransom really. Personally I would fuck with that lineup even more, Werth trade or not. I’m not discouraged with Valdez, I’m actually starting to like him. He has his GIDP problem but is a hustler and has pretty good baseball instincts. Jimmy and Vic are not cutting the crap leading off. I can deal with Rollins not being your textbook leadoff man but that’s when he’s doing all his other shit he does like getting on base, causing trouble, popping a HR now and then. He’s not been doing any of that. I see it like this. And with Howard turning into a .300 guy he needs to hit 3rd. Also Victorino has been bullshit, but somehow has RBI #s, put him in the middle of the lineup, fuck it. Nothing else is working, try this.

    Valdez
    Polanco
    Howard
    Werth
    Victorino
    Ibanez
    Rollins
    Ruiz

  • wheels’ hairpiece

LaRussa’s been coaching circles aroung Charlie for the whole series…He used his entire bullpen lto try and win the Moyer game, he could have saved a couple of guys for last night.

@Bozo Are you fucking high? Ross Gload is the answer. GTFOOH

This team is out of excuses. The only guy missing from out starting line-up is Chase, and we’ve won the division with him on the DL before. The rest of the line-up are the same guys who started out on a tear to start the season. Looks like the message from sending Kendrick to AAA and the trade rumors surrounding Werth are having their desired effect, unless we’re talking about C____

As much as I was mad at Cholly for leaving big Joe in, I can’t blame him on this one. Let’s face it, we haven’t had much luck with the bench and we saw what happened when Contreras came in so he was damned if he did and damned if he didn’t.

But somehow, I just knew the first batter Blanton faced in the 7th was gonna be trouble.

first off fuck cliff lee, hes not on the team anymore, so just drop it. its the history channel at this point.

Second, we keep coming back to watch because love baseball. I think ive hit acceptance. I accept the team may not make the playoffs, but i still watch. I didnt make an angry sound last night the whole game, i just enjoyed a beer and watching baseball. This bad stretch will weed out the bandwagon jumpers, so take advantage of that by getting tickets while you can, because when they get ‘it” back, look out!

  • http://deleted JohnMatrix

in addition to my post above, lee wouldnt be making a difference this year, it would be another pitcher who would give up 1 or 2 runs and still lose. Also, same as Werth, they probably wouldnt have been able to afford him after this year anyway. They were able to lock doc up for 3 or 4 years.

  • BJ

woah hey now dont go signing me up for some cock….i just thought the website name switch contest would help ease the pain of the losing skid…but i havent felt this low as a fan in a while…they’ll bounce back though

  • wheels’ hairpiece

@Matrix Yeah we know, but now that the trade winds are swirling it seems like the National media just realized what an enormous mistake RAJ made in ignoring C____ L__ because his erection for Halladay re-routed the blood flow from his brain.

  • It’s all over folks

It is over. The bigger race is whether they can finish in 2nd and/or above .500

  • PhilsSuckMooseBalls

    STILL MUNCHIN’ ON SOME COCK!

  • http://deleted mich

Nicely said Matrix and Wheels’ Hairpiece. RAJ made a bonehead move with Lee that will taint (huh huh, I said taint) his sophmore year as GM. We’re really in same situation as a year ago in the sense we need a starter but only this season is dire at this point so the pressure is on big time.

Maybe Lee wouldn’t have made a difference given this shitty offensive slump but then again maybe he would have. Morale is in the shitter and it happened way before the slump. There’s something missing and not sure we’ll find out what it is this season. The pitchers are down with no offense and the offense down due to the up and down pitching with both starters and relief. All I know is Lee sure seemed to make a difference here and getting a new starter does the same, I’m all for it.

Call me crazy, but I still have faith they’ll turn it around and if not, there’s next year. It’ll just be a long ass off season.

Nothing anyone else isn’t saying but that’s my 2 cents.

  • bigmyc

    Moose balls…hahahaha…

Not cow balls. Now pig nuts. Moose balls. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

Get it? ‘Cause moose balls are big. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

That is some crazy creative shit.

  • Amanda’s Vajayjay

That’s pretty much all I want too.

  • Andy Reid

    ANYONE WANNA GO TO IHOP?

  • Joe Blanton

    I DO!

  • Stickaforkin’em

I think Uncle Cholly made a managing error in keeping Fat Joe in with bases juiced in the 7th of a tied ball game, but given the offensive (literally and figuratively) numbers that this team has managed to put up, you might understand why he didn’t think he would get anything more out of a pinch hitter, and if they came up empty, he’d then have to go to the bull pen, which had been used a lot the night before and hasn’t been reliable either…

What this team can’t afford is to give up Werth’s RH bat…as up and down as its been this season…for another starter. To coin a phrase, IT’S THE OFFENSE, STUPID! This team is like -20 or so on HRs and well below their run production last year. How many games have they managed to score 2 or fewer runs this season? A TON! Doc is 10 and 8 with a 2.40 ERA…that is JUST STUPID…he should be 15and 3 with that ERA!!

Ladies and gentlemen, the problem with this team is NOT starting pitching. The number 1 problem is the lack of run production. The number 2 problem is the bull pen. We cannot afford to lose a 5 tool RH bat out of this line-up, even if he’s having an up and down season. Period.

They finally called me up, everybody stop worrying.

  • don

There are guys in AAA who aught to be plugged into the bullpen. Maybe they won’t be great, but who the fuck knows? The guys there now aren’t great either.

Crashburn Alley had a histogram of runs scored this year. 0-3 runs: 46 of the 94 games. (I don’t know if that includes yesterday) Fucking wonderful.

  • wheels’ hairpiece

@Jdash You know your profile pic makes you look like an eye-patched pirate krispy kreme donut eating mofo

  • bigmyc

J, your post made me sad….like Vanilla Sky.

  • wheels’ hairpiece

    welcome to the show Worley

Earlier Wednesday, the Phillies optioned right-hander Andrew Carpenter to Triple-A Lehigh and purchased the contract of right-hander Vance Worley from Double-A Reading. Carpenter pitched two innings and took the loss Tuesday, and Manuel said Worley provided bullpen insurance for a team running short of arms

  • bigmyc

    Stickinforksin’em,

Werth isn’t doing anything for this team beside helping to hold them down. He is gonna be gone anyhow. I mean, they signed Howard and have other players’ contracts coming up. They couldn’t keep Cliff Lee because of money, why should they seriously consider keeping Werth? Why not trade him for some value? Why not make some room for the Domonator?

Thing is; we can afford to lose a right handed power bat. What’s he giving us now?

  • Andy Reid

Bottom line is even if we don’t trade Werth we won’t be able to pay what he will be asking. He’s a good athlete and a good right handed bat money but in my humble opinion he doesn’t deserve Jason Bay money and Rube won’t pay him that. I would rather trade him for something, maybe Upton or some prospects from Tampa and let Domino Brown get a shot at the majors.

  • wheels’ hairpiece

There *IS* something better out there, actually:

  • CBPbitches

So we trade for a pitcher and the Phillies will suddenly start putting runs on the board.. They don’t score runs for Halladay. They don’t score runs for Hamels. They don’t score runs for Moyer. They don’t score runs for Kendrick. They don’t score runs for Blanton. The don’t score runs for the bullpen. But, maybe if we get a new pitcher, they’ll suddenly start scoring runs. Makes perfect sense to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111!11!!!

  • Mark Snivley

Heyyyyyyyyy guys, why dont they call me up, me and my boy dj can carry us to the playoffs

  • Bozo

@Wheels hairpiece- No, I’m not, BUT he has made the most out of the oppurtunities he has had to start, Francisco sucks, Werth hasn’t done shit, Gload has played over 100 career games in the outfield, and I don’t think it would be too insane to try him at an infield position other than 1st base if you don’t want to put him in the OF.

The Phillies aren’t hitting right now and something should be tried before it’s too late. Bench Werth a few games? Bench Victorino? Bench Ibanez? Try Gload at 2nd or 3rd? Gload deserves more playing time than he is getting and definitely deserves more than Dobbs. Charlie just seems too loyal to the same guys over and over again.

  • Bozo

I know we all feel the same and come up with ideas that may be good or bad but I think we can all agree we are tired of watching such lifeless offense from everyone but Howard.

  • wheels’ hairpiece

@Bozo Have you seen what Miguel Cairo is doing this year with the Cardinals?

  • wheels’ hairpiece

    i meant the reds…

  • http://deleted JohnMatrix

What about cody ransom, maybe squeeze him in somwhere to

  • Bozo

I’m not sure if you’re trying to insuate he has bad numbers(which he doesn’t) or you’re saying the Phillies should have kept him.

A bench player with those numbers can change a team.

  • Bozo

Ransom is getting nothing but offspeed pitches that he can’t hit. Wheels said it like 10 times yesterday.

  • Stickaforkin’em

Amen, CBPbitches…it’s lack of run support more than a lack of starting pitchers!

“Crashburn Alley had a histogram of runs scored this year. 0-3 runs: 46 of the 94 games. (I don’t know if that includes yesterday) Fucking wonderful.” (thanks, don)

I’m not a Werth apologist…but if you trade him for another starter, what are you going to do about the fact that you’re taking a RH batter out of a line-up that is already over stocked with LH bats?

  • wheels’ hairpiece

i say bench the whole team for a series and let the iron pigs play

  • wheels’ hairpiece

@Bozo Yeah, I was pointing out another area that RAJ’s erection for Roy Halladay obstructed

  • Bozo

Lololol. MLBTR says Lidge would contact Oswalt to help convince him to come here. One of the comments is “They’re calling in Lidge to close the deal…here comes another blown save.”

Did you not read my post regarding this right handed bat?
What is Werth doing for you now?

  • Bozo

    I predicted 4-1 loss. Hamels 7IP 2 runs.

  • Glen Quagmire

Without question, we need some more action in the 2-hole….ahuh…if ya get my drift.

    Giggity.

  • J

TRY TO GET COUNT UP – ITS HOT!!!!!!!!!!

  • Milt Thompson

Whatever you do, don’t bunt him over.

  • Milt Thompson

Nice job, Shane. Your job is to not see more than 1 pitch, especially with a runner on base and 0 outs.

  • don

Milt Thompson, how does it feel to know that Mark McGuire is having a better year than you?

  • Milt Thompson

I respect the hell out of Mark. That guy probably hit more solo HRs than anyone in the history of baseball.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

Werthless sure did those scouts proud by swinging at ball 4.

  • Bozo

Werth missed a hanging curve horribly, he kills those pitches when he’s going good.

  • CardinalsAnnounceTeam

In Philadelphia, they’re probably really upset with Jayson Werth for striking out with 2 on and 2 out. They’re probably beating their wives and children as we speak. St. Louis fans would cheer his effort and give him a standing ovation the next time he comes to the plate. Just goes to show why so many players try to come play for the Cardinals.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

Cole’ secret to his recent awesomeness is him cutting his hair shorter.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

STRUCK OUT THE SIDE! ONE OF THOSE GUYS WAS ALBERT!

  • Bozo

Get Cole some fucking runs fast.

  • It’s all over folks

Braves already up 4-0…we could be 8 out by dark…

  • Cole Handsome

I’m trying to get through this game as fast as I can. I’m sick of all these day games. I’m not too old to freckle.

  • Doug Glanville

Way to work those counts, guys.

  • Uncle Charlie’s hands

    Radar gun must be broken

  • Bozo

Oh man. That was so close to 6 consecutive strikeouts for Cole.

  • CardinalsAnnounceTeam

Right now we’re telling a story about a fight between Cole Hamels and Brett Myers. That’s what playing outside of St. Louis does to players, it turns them against each other!

  • Stickaforkin’em

Hey Dan, when you get a RH bat that will do better than hit .280, more than 13 HRs, more than 50 RBIs with an .870 OPS, stick him in the line-up…but since there isn’t a RH bat sitting on the bench or in AA/AAA that will get production, I guess we’re stuck with Werth thru the end of the season. His impending free agency is more motivation than anyone on this team to hit better.

  • Bozo

Most of Werth’s numbers are from the first month than anything. Don’t get me wrong, if Werth signed with the Phillies I’d be plenty happy.

  • http://deleted JohnMatrix

LA and Fanske just sound like their spirit is broken

  • Mike P

I appreciate that T-Mac failed to mention that the Phillies owners built a higher wall in right field at the Baker Bowl to try to keep Klein’s home run numbers down. They didn’t want to have to pay him big money for clubbing the ball over the Baker Bowl’s short right field porch. Ahhhh the Phillies…

  • Stickaforkin’em

No arguement…his numbers are down considerably, but I don’t think they’ll stay there…and I’d be happy to sign him…just not at the $$$ his agent has in mind.

  • Adam Eaton

Same fucking story as usual. Guys get on base and nobody bats them in. I swear, it just never gets better.

  • Doug Glanville

I think they’re already 0-20 with RISP today.

  • Bozo

I’m still curious if the Phillies did offer him a long term deal like Heyman reported.

    And Wainwright looks hittable today.

  • http://deleted JohnMatrix

most times during this slump that the phils have had a guy on 3rd has been from some kind of error or fluky play.

  • http://deleted JohnMatrix

hey remember about memorial day when they lost 5 or so, and we thought it couldnt go on much longer?

  • bigmyc

    Mike P., great tidbit.

Sickingforksupin’em, Those Werth #’s are front loaded and besides, …again…what is he doing for the lineup now? It’s only beneficial to balance the lineup when the said balancing player is hitting. capesce?

  • Amandah

“Try the suicide squeeze!!” said Ray Combs.

    Regards,

    Amandah

  • Uncle Charlie’s hands

    Does God hate us?

  • bigmyc

Then again, maybe Jayson Christ is subconsciously trying to scuttle his FA value so that he’ll have to take a low ball from RAJ (which he’ll swing through at this point). Maybe Werth does stay….

I wonder if the Domonator can play LF.

  • http://deleted JohnMatrix

i think franske just said jiz

  • Bozo

    Hi Polanco

  • Brandon Duckworth

Really…..I don’t have any plans for Saturday night.

  • Mike P

    @ bigmyc

I know, right? If you ever need to explain why the Phils were awful, outside of brief, random flashes of brilliance, for the first 90 years of their existence, I think that’s a pretty good little microcosm. It would be like the Phillies building a 60 foot fence on top of the right field wall at the Bank to limit Howard’s home run figures in order to cut down on his salary demands. It’s a completely insane way to run an organization.

As a result, he became quite a doubles hitter, though. Not surprisingly, if you look at his stats, his doubles numbers just die when he leaves Philly.

  • Bozo

Weak ass bloop breaks up perfecto.

  • Katherine

    lucky?

  • Nate Bump

Wanna come over and play some video games Brandon?

  • bigmyc

Kinda makes you wanna build a time machine, head to the Baker Bowl business office, ask for the person in charge of the joint and put a wing tip up someone’s ass.

  • bigmyc

Now bat-TING for the Phil-lies, Right fielder, Domonic Brown.

  • Mike P

    @ bigmyc

I’d be careful about visiting the Baker Bowl. The damned thing lit on fire or collapsed too many times to make it an appealing option for a tourist-in-time.

Best Baker Bowl trivia question? The right field wall (which was double the height of the Green Monster, and 30 feet closer to home plate) is fun, but after the Phils abandoned the stadium (in the middle of a season, by the way, because they thought it would be cheaper to rent Shibe Park from the A’s than to keep up their own building), it still remained in partial use. They used to hold minicar races there, and the old clubhouse was turned into a bar.

Maybe the craziest thought, though? With Shibe Park located down the street, the first stadium complex in the city was located in the heart of North Philly!

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

    See this, Ruben?

It’s what’ll happen if you trade offense for a front-line pitcher.

  • 85

    Rollins, Schneider, Valdez…

    SOUNDS LIKE RUNS!

  • bigmyc

    Total BS.

    53 strikes for Cole and 19 balls. 1 hit thru 5 2/3.

I hate to say it but I feel bad for Cole. What is wrong with these non hitting A holes?

  • Bozo

    Trade what offense?

  • Stickaforkin’em

Couldn’t agree with you more, Genius. And hey, what’s the site for your blog again?

  • Stickaforkin’em

way to take a pitch or two, James.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

    http://paviliondeck.com

I’ll update today. I just have no will to write lately…

  • bigmyc

Yes, but I’d be going there on business. The business of putting a wing tip up someone’s ass.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

    Piece of shit.

  • 85

    Of course.

  • Stickaforkin’em

    Exxon crashes again

  • Doug Glanville

I feel so bad for Hollywood. He’s pitching such a gem.

  • Mike P

I wonder if Cholly is ever going to just give up on trying to squeeze offense out of Valdez or Ransom and put Polly at 2nd and Dobbs at 3rd.

    Rollins
    Polly
    Ibanez
    Howard
    Werth
    Victorino
    Dobbs
    Chooch
    Pitcher

I know they still would probably struggle scoring runs, but at least with this lineup, you don’t have quite as many giant holes that you see with Valdez, Random, Schneider, etc. How many times have we seen them put several runners on base before dealing with the bottom of the lineup?

Another thought: I wish Cholly would just settle on a lineup for a few games. You have to hope that maybe they would settle down and get something going if they had a stable lineup game in and game out. The constant changes sure aren’t helping.

  • 85

Christ on a pony, these guys need to put something together…

…they’re gonna waste this pitching, aren’t they?

  • don

It’s kind of weird that he struck out 5 guys in a row to start the game and no one since then.

I hope this is the nail in the coffin as far as trading *away* hitting is concerned.

  • bigmyc

So King Cole is into the 8th with less than 80 pitches thrown. Looks like a lead pipe lock to put one in the win column for the Fightin Phils. All we need is a run and….what?

  • don

Someone donate a working thumb to Chase, stat.

Not that one guy can fix this mess but at least he can ground into a few less double plays.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

If we lose this game, I think is my nail in the coffin in terms of this team.

Give me all your 1998-2000 stories of futility, I don’t give two fucks.

  • 85

I want to believe in Raul right now. I really do.

  • bigmyc

For all you nervous fathers out there who have a daughter in dating age, don’t worry too much. Just make sure that she dates a Phillie because they won’t score.

  • PhillyPhanInChi

Holliday is god awful in the field.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

    The Phillies are like Twilight.

Both are about 2 hours long, people get on base, but nobody ever scores.

  • PhillyPhanInChi

This guy throws too hard for Ibanez to catch up….

  • MoyerIsMyHero

Poor Cole, he can not get a break…

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

    Yep!

  • 85

    Le sigh.

  • http://deleted JohnMatrix

the only reason shane was on 3rd was a fluky play anyway.

  • Stickaforkin’em

    unfucking real

  • PhillyPhanInChi

Ibanez is done. You know what annoys me even more about him now? His damn name. Every time I look at it all I can see is iBAnEZ. Which pisses me off even more.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

    47 games under 3 runs.

  • Katherine

    hang in there cole!

  • 85

Tony is that 3 runs or less, or 47 games with 0, 1, or 2?

    Either way, fuck.

  • MoyerIsMyHero

Cole should go on strike if he doesn’t win this game.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

    3 runs or less.

  • Joker Jack

THIS TEAM NEEDS AN ENEMA-RAUL, Gun!

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

This game would have been SOOOOOOOOOOO awesome to watch.

…Had I not watched the same pitching matchup in MAY when I didn’t know this was going to be a daily OCCURRENCE.

  • bigmyc

Moyer is a Hero, how do you feel about the season’s chances now? Heck, even if they win it..

Not lookin so idiotic, huh, Capt. Cheerleader?

I would think it would take an idiot to claim that anyone who thought the season was over was, in fact, an idiot. I guess that’s where you come in.

’07 ain’t coming to your rescue anytime soon, Chief.

  • Greenman!

I hope Werth gets traded to the White Sox, I’d enjoy going to a few sox games to boo him

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

    These bats aren’t sleeping, they’re hibernating…

  • Mike P

I still think it’s crazy to write off this season, regardless of how this game ends, for reasons that are well documented on this site’s comment boards and don’t require rehashing.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

“Now it’s up to the Phillies offense to get him a run! In the top of the 9th…”

    XD

  • Stickaforkin’em

Time for Howard to go yard and say good-bye to his friends and family with at least one win.

  • 85

This is one of the two or three best games he’s ever pitched, if not the best. The idea of him not winning makes me want to vomit.

Please for the love of God, Ryan, hit this shit a ton.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

    What, a VERY lucky 2007?

New flash, that will NEVER happen again.

  • http://deleted JohnMatrix

Can the starters come out to the public and call the team out? i guess that wouldnt be good.

  • PhillyPhanInChi

I’m going to agree with Mike P on this one. I’m filing it under “willing suspension of disbelief”

  • Courtney Love’s Tits

Shit and we thought we got no support!

  • PhillyPhanInChi

I think we can score against Reyes.

  • Greenman!

Howard needs to make his 400 lb brother happy

  • 85

I’d have thought we could score against Ross Ohlendorf, but no such luck.

For what it’s worth, I’m going hypernegative in hopes of a reverse jinx

    This team blows.

  • MoyerIsMyHero

bigmyc – Sure, I feel less optimistic every time we lose, since that makes us statistically less likely to come back. Obviously the chances are decreasing.

We were out in ’08, too, it’s not just ’07 – but that’s besides the point.

If you want to believe that it is impossible for things to turn around, go ahead. I for one will continue to believe that whatever is possible is possible.

I’d rather be a stupid optimist than a miserable defeatist.

  • Adamr14

Come to citizens bank this weekend to watch Ryan Howard, pitching ranging from decent to amazing, and 0-3 runs for the Phils!

  • Stickaforkin’em

    Stupid is as stupid does…

  • Mike P

    @ Tony

Coming back from this deficit wouldn’t be 2007-esque at all. If they’re still in this hole in mid-September, then I’d call it 2007-esque. At this point, they just have to whittle it down so they’re within 2 or 3 games by mid-September, when they’ll have 2 late season series against Atlanta.

Granted, with the hole they’ve been in, that seems daunting. But it’s far from impossible.

  • PhillyPhanInChi

Werth doing his best Burrell impression.

  • Phils Phan

At this point, only Camden will want Werth.

  • Howard Eskin

The Phillies don’t need another criminal like Upton on there team.

  • Howard Eskin

excuse me, their team I mean

  • MoyerIsMyHero

I’m certainly not saying they are definitely going to turn it around. I’m not even saying they are likely to turn it around. I’m just saying it isn’t reasonable to say they definitely *aren’t* going to turn it around.

  • Uncle Charlie’s hands

Anybody going through depression like me?

  • Phils Phan

There have been so many “microcosms” of this season. Add that DP to the list.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

This team is a fucking disgrace.

  • 85

Maybe all these dipshits need to start carrying doggie backpacks.

  • 85

    Madson. Super.

  • http://twitter.com/4who4what ScottGraham

Well, we do need a criminal to murder Danys Baez.

  • Greenman!

I personally went into a bad depression after the world series, then a little one once they started but I’ve got other things to do besides being sad about baseball. FOOTBALL! Can’t wait to watch Kolb be mediocre!

  • Stickaforkin’em

I wish I was in a coma so I didn’t know they were playing like this.

  • Bozo

HOW THE FUCK IS HAMELS OUT OF THE GAME

  • kurt

    Madson FTL

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

    @Greenman

At least Kolb will throw a touchdown pass each game. That’s more exciting than this shitstand.

  • bigmyc

    Well, MIMHero

Never have I once said that the Phillies were dead. I just objected to your classification of those who did as “idiots.”

But get this straight; there will be no more ’07 repeats. Maybe ’08. But no more ’07′s.

Today’s events aren’t encouraging to my outlook, especially.

  • Stickaforkin’em

exactly, Greenman…WTF is there to look forward to in this town?

  • FanSince09

COAL HAMMELS SUX WHAT A FAGET!!!!!

  • Brandon

23 games with 1 run or less?!?! Sweet Jesus thats horrible

  • http://twitter.com/4who4what Milt Thompson

If Cole wanted to win this game, he’d hit a solo shot.

  • Greenman!

haha thats true Tony, he will probably get a touch down most games.

  • Stickaforkin’em

madson’s in so he can take the loss when pooholes hits the walk-off that’s coming….

  • MoyerIsMyHero

And I’ll take back saying that it is ‘idiotic’ to write off the season. It is just self-indulgently negative.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

LA and Franzke have sounded dead for a while.

But I just heard T-Mac said when he said “In the air to centerfield….”

All four of them should just walk out of the booth or kill themselves so all Phillies games are played in dead silence.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

    *sigh when he said

  • 85

    @Stickaforkin’em: This, and only this.

  • 85
  • Greenman!

I think the team might play better if T-mac kills himself

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

    Amandah should try out.

  • Mike P

    @ Tony

If you believe that, you have way more faith in Kevin Kolb than I do. Honestly, I have set my expectations for the Eagles at 6 wins. If they get more than 6, I would be stunned. If they get less than 6, it wouldn’t surprise me at all. After watching Kolb for a season, Eagles fans will finally realize the advantage of McNabb’s mistakes being wormburners–they didn’t get returned for TDs.

But fuck the NFL. This is baseball season, and it will remain baseball season until somebody hoists the WS trophy.

  • Amandah

I told Cole last night as he was va-jazzling his crotch area that he’d pitch well this afternoon.

    Atta guy.

    Regards,

    Amandah

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

    @Greenman!

I disagree. In fact, I think T-Mac would have a better bat than Werthless.

    Put him in the 5-hole.

  • Stickaforkin’em

    Oh, Dobber will do it…NOT!

  • Crocks

Oh boy, I wonder if Lidge gets another chance to get owned by Pujols…

  • MoyerIsMyHero

Believe me, I’m not saying ’07 or even ’08 will happen again – hopefully it won’t, because hopefully we’ll come back now, not late Sept.

I use those as examples of times people said the team was finished when they weren’t. The whole point is that they were way worse off than now, so if it was wrong then, it could be wrong now.

  • Stickaforkin’em

    atta boy, Dobber

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

I asked Marshall Harris on Twitter if we’re going to see Ricky Bo attempt to commit suicide on live TV today.

    I’m seriously wondering, no joke…

  • Stickaforkin’em

@MoyerIsMyHero…i guess this is your theme song….

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

We really don’t deserve to win this division.

    The Braves and Mets do.

Even if we DO sneak in this, isn’t even a team built to win the NLDS.

  • Domonic Brown

Just sittin’ here on the dock on the Lehigh,
    Watchin’ the sludge roll away.
Ooo, I’m just sittin’ on the dock of the Lehigh,
    Wastin’ time.

  • MoyerIsMyHero

Fork, When it comes to baseball, sure.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

Here comes that fat yokel Charlie Manuel to ruin this game!

Calling it now, Pujols hits or homers.

    Phillies lose.

    Stop making dumb decisions, Chuck.

  • 85

Come on Tony, it’s the right move. It’s the only move.

And how bad does Charlie get destroyed if he leaves Romero to face Pujols and Holliday and they hit him?

  • Domonic Brown

    @ 85:

More likely Romero hits them. After consecutive 1-2 counts.

  • Crocks

This team can compete with anybody if they get hot. It’s just that they’re running out of time now…

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

    Oh really?

3-1 count to Albert Pujols with Holliday on deck.

  • Stickaforkin’em

Fuck the Mets…they’re not much better than us. The Braves on the other hand are playing well. Where’s our Braves fan who likes to rub our noses in it today?

  • 85

    Really.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

He’s smart enough not to post here anymore. : )

  • Crocks

    Durbs

  • 85

That Charlie. Tactical genius, I tell ya.

  • Bozo

Durbin has always seemed to be a solid fielder.

  • MoyerIsMyHero

See, that’s the problem. Tony can call “Pujlos hits or homers. Phillies lose.” It doesn’t happen, but there’s derision for being wrong.

If someone had “called” Howard hitting a home-run last inning, and it didn’t happen, they’d be stupid for being so naive and optimistic.

  • Crocks

    I love Charlie!

  • MoyerIsMyHero

    *no derision

  • Steve Perry

@Stikinaforkin’em- Glee? Really? You couldn’t find Journey? How about something from Clay Akins next time? Might not seem as gay.

  • MoyerIsMyHero

Not that I want you to be derired (I have to be spelling that wrong). I just feel like being pessimistic is too easy, because you can always say how you are so “happy to be proven wrong.”

  • Mike P

Phillies struggles aside, every time they show the numbers on a Cards pitcher, I’m stunned. This is one helluva staff.

  • Stickaforkin’em

come on, peanut head…get on base

  • Doug Glanville

    POLLY!!!

  • Adamr14

    A SOLO HR!!!

  • 85

    Getthefuggouttahere.

  • Fuck the Braves

    I love Placido Polanco.

  • Mike P

And the second I click “send,” Polly sends one deep. Wow.

  • Crocks

    LaRussa is such A MORON!!

  • MoyerIsMyHero

We can totally hold on to this lead!

  • Dubee Dubee Du

    Please make it hold up.

  • Stickaforkin’em

@ Steve…uh, there was a point to selecting the Glee version

  • Nick

    YEAH BITCHEs.

This pretty much clinches us the 2010 world series right here.

  • MoyerIsMyHero

I was thinking “man, it is dead at that stadium!” But then I remembered this game started at 1:00 on a Thursday.

  • Stickaforkin’em

awesome! peanut head touched all the bases! WOOHOO!

  • Sarah

Don’t worry, Lidge will come in for the save.

  • don

Lidge time? He’s our closer. We’re paying him to close games. mumblemumblemumble

  • bigmyc

Awesome. We have a heckuva chance to stay 7 games out!

  • Doug Glanville

This is the turning point we’ve all been waiting for. Slump = over.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

We’re reaching our post limit guys

  • Nick

Honestly you guys are so much more funny when the Phils suck.

Love reading all of your posts <3333333

  • brian

    Lidge will fuck it up

  • Crocks

@MoyerIsMyHero: Very well said about how easy/risk free it is to be pessimistic!

  • MoyerIsMyHero

There’s a post limit? Is that what happened last night?

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

Why do all Cardinals relievers look the same?

Long black hair with a goatee/beard

    or

Redhead or bald with a red goatee

  • Crocks

At least Lidge won’t have to face Pooholes

  • MoyerIsMyHero

@Crock – Yes, but then I had to admit to myself: By being optimistic, I’m also protecting my ability to say ‘Haha! I believed in them all along like a real fan, not like you fairweather defeatists!” if they do turn it around…

  • Dubee Dubee Du

MoyerIsMyHero- nobody goes to the BPS games at the Bank, why should they in Baseball World?

  • MoyerIsMyHero

    Insurance please.

  • Brandon

Polanco must’ve talked to Milt before that at bat.

  • Adamr14

Is it a requirement to have douchey facial hair if you’re a closer?

Lidge, Jenks, Franklin, K-Rods just a douche, Brian Wilson… I’m sure there’s more

  • Crocks

    still much more honorable!

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

How awesome would the Phillies be if they played 12 innings instead of 9?

  • Stickaforkin’em

odds of werth going oh for five?

  • Bozo

FEAR THE BEARD TIME BITCHES… or goatee.

  • Greenman!

you have to be a redneck to be a closer

  • Last Remaining Member of the Wolf Pack

I’m flying to Las Vegas, and got bumped up to first class, which means free booze and wi fi. And the Phillies might actually win. Woo!!

  • Nick

    Jayson Werth AKA free out

  • Doug Glanville

LRMOTWP – I don’t think your name is long enough.

  • Nick

I knew he would make me eat my words.

    FUCKER.

  • MoyerIsMyHero

    About time.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

    WOW! Werthless came through!

  • Greenman!

yeah he’s a month late on that hit

  • Last Remaining Member of the Wolf Pack, Trapped in 2005

    Better?

  • Brandon

That is one ugly goatee but whatever works for you Werth.

  • Uncle Charlie’s hands

But still, the chances of Moyer getting a hit is better than Jayson WISP.

  • Bozo

Must have taken a huge weight off his shoulders

  • Stickaforkin’em

there’s your fucking insurance, of werth’s RH bat…

I’m watching the STL broadcast on MLB Network, and these guys are soooooo boring.

Werth is batting and they say “Jayson comes from a very atheletic family.” Then 15 seconds of silence. Why would you say that and then not explain what you mean??!!?? I mean, I know, but STL viewers might not.

  • Tony LaRussa’s liver

This is gonna be a long night

  • Greenman!

STL viewers need about 15 seconds to process what they just said

  • Uncle Charlie’s hands

  • MoyerIsMyHero

I haven’t been able to listen to Philly broadcasters regularly in years – do they say terribly arrogant things like that? I mean, when the team doesn’t suck.

  • Uncle Charlie’s hands

    12 hits compared to 1.

Just trying to keep you happy, Doug.

  • Steve Perry

To even know there is a Glee version of ANY song shows alot.

  • MoyerIsMyHero

So I’m reading some trade rumor write-up about the Werth to Tampa for prospects to Houston for Owalt theory. And they say Brown would prob be called up as everyday RF -OR- platoon with Fransico.

Is that really more likely than platooning Ibanez and Fransico?

  • MoyerIsMyHero

@Steve, yeah it shows he probably spends time with women. Unlike you, apparently.

  • Adam Eaton

Oh great, Brad Lidge is in. I feel so at ease.

  • Anthony LaRussa Esq.

How dare any of you rabble question the Great and Powerful Larussa! My genius knows no bounds. You watch next week I’ll bat the pitcher 7th, just because I can.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

    Murphy’s law.

The hitters have runs and the pitching is great.

Time for the bullpen to explode!

  • 85

    Ah fuck. Ah fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck.

  • bigmyc

you shouldn’t Adam E. He just walked the first batter.

    But, Lidge still sucks. Ammmiright?

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

    1-hitter!

  • Fuck the Braves

Look, guys! The Phillies CAN SCORE RUNS. Bring in Roy Oswalt! The problem was the pitching all along! All we need is another pitcher who can shut out a potent team like the Cardinals and we’ll catch the Braves in no time!

  • Mike P

Wait, wasn’t this game supposed to be over when Pujols hit a homer off of Durbin? Maybe when Werth blew it with RISP? Or when Lidge blew the save?

  • Nick

No Mike p, you’re thinking of almost every other game the Phillies ever play.

  • http://paviliondeck.com TonyIsDynamic

SEVEN OR HELL. I love it.

  • kurt

    Thread not broken?

  • Mike P

Three games back in the wild card in July? The season is clearly over.

  • Bozo

Amaro has alread said he wants Domonic Brown playing everyday.

If they want to platoon Ibanez then get someone better than Francisco. HI2YOU JOHN MAYBERRY JR.

  • Greenman!

so looks like Happ is probably getting a start this weeked, I would imagine that sent Rube just said the starters would be filled internally

  • Greenman!

    *since rube

  • Bozo

He said Moyer not starters according to MLBTR.

  • http://thequietphan.blogspot.com Mrs.Happ

    Kendrick Saturday, Happ Sunday

  • Greenman!

Mrs. Happ you should go make him happy, he’s single and lonely!!!!

  • Domonic Brown

Anyone notice that Sarge is developing a little Harry Caray phlegm pronunciation problem? Watch the video on Phillies.com of him talking about Victorino’s diving catch.

    Victorino’s “czzzzhhhhlove”.

  • Estrogen driven fanbase

We told you Werth is going to be alright. Being that HOT how could he not?

  • Uncle Charlie’s hands

    No trade :(

  • Bozo

Amaro has said they know what they are going to do so we’ll find out sooner or later.

I think I’m leaning towards Haren more than Oswalt. Any preference from you guys or don’t care as long as the Phillies get one of them?

  • http://twitter.com/4who4what ScottGraham

Looks like this is the team we’ve got for the rest of the year. ESPN Insider seems to indicate that Philly is on Haren’s No-Trade list, and with Oswalt snagging up any trade with the Phillies, it’s probably not gonna happen.

I’d expect them to play to the deadline, if they’re 10 games back, trade Werth, if they’re still in, keep him and get a Ben Sheets or whoever is available.

  • J

@ScottGraham, we’re on his no-trade list? I didn’t see that. On MLBTR it’s only reported that the Twins are on his no-trade list.

  • Dubee Dubee Du

So the removal of the thumbs up, anything to do with the bandwidth?

  • http://twitter.com/4who4what ScottGraham

J, this is according to ESPN Insider’s rumors.

Basically, he had 8 teams he won’t go to this season, 12 he won’t go to next season. He says he prefers the west coast, and ESPN says he has most of the east on his list, including the Phillies.

but he did say something like “If one of the teams on my list from the east wants me, I may have to think about it.” in the same article, so who knows.

Roy Halladay couldn’t wait to come to Philadelphia, and Cliff Lee is furious that he was shipped out…. so now why do all these pitchers not wanna come here?

  • http://twitter.com/4who4what ScottGraham

Ultimately, though, I do think we’ll end up with Oswalt. If he really wants out of Houston, the Phillies are his best bet (unless the Yankees or Red Sox come calling). Ed Wade is a dope, but even he wouldn’t trade an ace to his division rival, would he?

  • Greenman!

    MILT NOOOOOOOOOOOO HE GOT FIRED!
