July 21 Game Recap: Cardinals 5, Phillies 1

Joe Blanton allowed four runs in seven plus innings, and the offense was held in check again, as the Phillies dropped their third game in a row to the St. Louis Cardinals to drop to 48-45 on the season.

While the game didn’t end until Greg Dobbs flied out in the top of the ninth inning, it was over long before that, due to a serious of curious moves from Charlie Manuel that has become a disturbing trend as of late.

It was in the top of the seventh inning, the score was tied at one apiece, and Carlos Ruiz worked a walk off St. Louis starter Jamie Garcia to load the bases. Joe Blanton, who had allowed one run over six innings, was due up. And with two outs, Charlie made the curious decision of letting his pitcher hit instead of opting for a pinch-hitter.

Blanton struck out on three pitches.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Cardinals needed only one pitch to make Charlie regret his mistake, when Matt Holliday hit the first offering of the inning over the left field wall to give the Cards the lead, which they would not relinquish.

It was an outcome that everyone saw coming, and quite frankly, one that the Phillies deserved.

Despite how well Blanton was pitching at that point in the game, a pinch hitter would have significantly increased the team’s chances of taking the lead. Of course, this speaks to the much larger issue of how much Charlie does not trust his bench or his bullpen.

But all that aside, the Phillies were in position to take the lead, and they failed to even put themselves in a position to take advantage. The Cardinals jumped on that missed opportunity and never looked back, as they added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth, also off Blanton, who was inexplicably sent out to start the inning.

And like I said on Twitter: The “L” shouldn’t be charged to Joe Blanton, but to Charlie Manuel.

Same thing he did to Blanton in the Sunday start in Pittsburgh. Joe had pitched well, but Charlie left him out there an inning too long, and crack-crack-crack and a bloop off Contreras later and it was yet another loss.

Looking more and more like it’s just not going to happen this year… hate saying that.

Ross Gload has played 105 carer games in the OF and has made a very small amount of errors(18 total for his career at all positions). He’s barely had any playing time and who knows, maybe he steps up and gets a hit. I’d rather have him in the lineup than Ben Francisco. Or another option would be try to have Gload play 2nd or 3rd.

Small sample sizes etc but here

Gload has a .360 batting average in 7 starts this season

2 outs with RISP – .333 with 7RBI this season

In 277 career at-bats vs lefties he is hitting .300 with 3HR and 41RBI

Someone needs to be given a chance to step up, only Ryan Howard is doing any damage offensively(and I agree with Sarge that Howard should be hitting 3rd)

Anyone who says the Phillies are a bad team is a joke. They’re a great team that’s playing about as poorly as they can play. I feel like this whole season is needed though. These guys need to go through this to remember what it’s like to suck ass. It will separate the men from the boys this year and come next season everyone will know who’s going to quit, and who’s going to fight. Halladay, Hamels, Polonco, Howard and Ruiz are all out there fighting. Rollins is being Rollins, Utz is injured and Shane, Werth and Ibanez are all question marks.

I’m actually going to say that Blanton is fighting too. Tonight wasn’t his fault other than him not telling Cholly to pull him, and for that reason alone, he’s fighting. Moyer is a gamer. Contreras works harder than it looks. I really think Lidge has come a long way too. Jury is still out on Madson and we haven’t seen enough of Durbin or Herndon really.

I like this team. I like this teams chances. I just like them more when they’re all in sync….

I can’t blame Charlie for thinking he has a better shot with homerun Joe with the bases chucked than with anyone on his bench. This just goes to show they need help, bad! It’s more than Werth being a hole in the lineup. (you can also pretty much say that about Ibanez and Victorino as well, Rollins isn’t far behind) Who’s he going to put up there against a lefthander anyways with Francisco already in the game? Your only option is Ransom really. Personally I would fuck with that lineup even more, Werth trade or not. I’m not discouraged with Valdez, I’m actually starting to like him. He has his GIDP problem but is a hustler and has pretty good baseball instincts. Jimmy and Vic are not cutting the crap leading off. I can deal with Rollins not being your textbook leadoff man but that’s when he’s doing all his other shit he does like getting on base, causing trouble, popping a HR now and then. He’s not been doing any of that. I see it like this. And with Howard turning into a .300 guy he needs to hit 3rd. Also Victorino has been bullshit, but somehow has RBI #s, put him in the middle of the lineup, fuck it. Nothing else is working, try this.

in addition to my post above, lee wouldnt be making a difference this year, it would be another pitcher who would give up 1 or 2 runs and still lose. Also, same as Werth, they probably wouldnt have been able to afford him after this year anyway. They were able to lock doc up for 3 or 4 years.

Nicely said Matrix and Wheels’ Hairpiece. RAJ made a bonehead move with Lee that will taint (huh huh, I said taint) his sophmore year as GM. We’re really in same situation as a year ago in the sense we need a starter but only this season is dire at this point so the pressure is on big time.

Maybe Lee wouldn’t have made a difference given this shitty offensive slump but then again maybe he would have. Morale is in the shitter and it happened way before the slump. There’s something missing and not sure we’ll find out what it is this season. The pitchers are down with no offense and the offense down due to the up and down pitching with both starters and relief. All I know is Lee sure seemed to make a difference here and getting a new starter does the same, I’m all for it.

Call me crazy, but I still have faith they’ll turn it around and if not, there’s next year. It’ll just be a long ass off season.

I think Uncle Cholly made a managing error in keeping Fat Joe in with bases juiced in the 7th of a tied ball game, but given the offensive (literally and figuratively) numbers that this team has managed to put up, you might understand why he didn’t think he would get anything more out of a pinch hitter, and if they came up empty, he’d then have to go to the bull pen, which had been used a lot the night before and hasn’t been reliable either…

What this team can’t afford is to give up Werth’s RH bat…as up and down as its been this season…for another starter. To coin a phrase, IT’S THE OFFENSE, STUPID! This team is like -20 or so on HRs and well below their run production last year. How many games have they managed to score 2 or fewer runs this season? A TON! Doc is 10 and 8 with a 2.40 ERA…that is JUST STUPID…he should be 15and 3 with that ERA!!

Ladies and gentlemen, the problem with this team is NOT starting pitching. The number 1 problem is the lack of run production. The number 2 problem is the bull pen. We cannot afford to lose a 5 tool RH bat out of this line-up, even if he’s having an up and down season. Period.

Thing is; we can afford to lose a right handed power bat. What’s he giving us now?

Bottom line is even if we don’t trade Werth we won’t be able to pay what he will be asking. He’s a good athlete and a good right handed bat money but in my humble opinion he doesn’t deserve Jason Bay money and Rube won’t pay him that. I would rather trade him for something, maybe Upton or some prospects from Tampa and let Domino Brown get a shot at the majors.

@Wheels hairpiece- No, I’m not, BUT he has made the most out of the oppurtunities he has had to start, Francisco sucks, Werth hasn’t done shit, Gload has played over 100 career games in the outfield, and I don’t think it would be too insane to try him at an infield position other than 1st base if you don’t want to put him in the OF.

The Phillies aren’t hitting right now and something should be tried before it’s too late. Bench Werth a few games? Bench Victorino? Bench Ibanez? Try Gload at 2nd or 3rd? Gload deserves more playing time than he is getting and definitely deserves more than Dobbs. Charlie just seems too loyal to the same guys over and over again.

I know, right? If you ever need to explain why the Phils were awful, outside of brief, random flashes of brilliance, for the first 90 years of their existence, I think that’s a pretty good little microcosm. It would be like the Phillies building a 60 foot fence on top of the right field wall at the Bank to limit Howard’s home run figures in order to cut down on his salary demands. It’s a completely insane way to run an organization.

As a result, he became quite a doubles hitter, though. Not surprisingly, if you look at his stats, his doubles numbers just die when he leaves Philly.

Best Baker Bowl trivia question? The right field wall (which was double the height of the Green Monster, and 30 feet closer to home plate) is fun, but after the Phils abandoned the stadium (in the middle of a season, by the way, because they thought it would be cheaper to rent Shibe Park from the A’s than to keep up their own building), it still remained in partial use. They used to hold minicar races there, and the old clubhouse was turned into a bar.

Maybe the craziest thought, though? With Shibe Park located down the street, the first stadium complex in the city was located in the heart of North Philly!

I know they still would probably struggle scoring runs, but at least with this lineup, you don’t have quite as many giant holes that you see with Valdez, Random, Schneider, etc. How many times have we seen them put several runners on base before dealing with the bottom of the lineup?

Another thought: I wish Cholly would just settle on a lineup for a few games. You have to hope that maybe they would settle down and get something going if they had a stable lineup game in and game out. The constant changes sure aren’t helping.

Looks like this is the team we’ve got for the rest of the year. ESPN Insider seems to indicate that Philly is on Haren’s No-Trade list, and with Oswalt snagging up any trade with the Phillies, it’s probably not gonna happen.

I’d expect them to play to the deadline, if they’re 10 games back, trade Werth, if they’re still in, keep him and get a Ben Sheets or whoever is available.

J, this is according to ESPN Insider’s rumors.

Basically, he had 8 teams he won’t go to this season, 12 he won’t go to next season. He says he prefers the west coast, and ESPN says he has most of the east on his list, including the Phillies.

but he did say something like “If one of the teams on my list from the east wants me, I may have to think about it.” in the same article, so who knows.

Roy Halladay couldn’t wait to come to Philadelphia, and Cliff Lee is furious that he was shipped out…. so now why do all these pitchers not wanna come here?

Ultimately, though, I do think we’ll end up with Oswalt. If he really wants out of Houston, the Phillies are his best bet (unless the Yankees or Red Sox come calling). Ed Wade is a dope, but even he wouldn’t trade an ace to his division rival, would he?
