Bow down before your new left fielder

I obviously don’t remember the debut month of every Phillies player in the history of the franchise, but I can’t imagine any being better than the April of one Raul Ibañez.

His defense — which was his main knock coming into town — has been highly sufficient, but it’s that bat of his that has everyone trying to remember who was out in left last season. Here’s the footage of perhaps his biggest (second biggest?) hit thus far with the requisite Wayne & Garth treatment from the Pat Burrell converts:

Hey, where’s the live call? I only heard the radio.

Never saw Pete Happy look so happy.

Thank you, meech, i’m stealing this.

Solid baseball is all this guy knows. There was a smattering of boos from the fans when he didn’t make a play for the ball that one hopped him in the 2nd, but with Dunn on 2nd, keeping the ball in front of him was the right idea. Raul Ibanez will cool down, but he’ll bat the the most underrated .290 with 25HRs, 105 RBI, and 80 R that any ballplayer ever has. The biggest difference between Raul and Pat will prove to be the 35+ fewer times Ibanez strikes out. When you put the ball in play, good things happen.

    off topic, but…
vote matt stairs for homerun derby 2009!

The way he flies out of that box. No show-boating. Thats class.

I love the guy in the Burrell jersey giving Raul the “we’re not worthy.”

    It’s the circle of life!

    Ibanez good.

  • Albert

Funny thing baseball is. Amaro looks like a genius for bringing in Raaaauuullll, but this is subject to change at any point. Lets hope Raul doesn’t make another error or GIDP.

  • Scott B

I was excited to see Raul come in knowing he didn’t go through cold streaks for long periods of time. Would have never guessed he would be red hot though.

Also, @Jordan – love the Matt Stairs Home Run Derby right in idea. Can we start an uprising with this?

  • Ricky Otero

How quickly we forget about Danny Tartabull.

  • Here Come Da Judge

Is Pete Happy the new “pat burrell”…the guy on the top of the stairs being the happiest to congratulate his teammates and maybe even “hammering guys asses”?

  • 85

This guy is fantastic. When the pitching starts to catch up to the suddenly hot bats, look the F out NL East.

Without trying to be a downer or anything, because I know most of you probably thought it too… how much would you love to hear Harry call that slam?

  • tmoni

first thing i thoughwas harry’s call would have been better

  • Gaze

I would have loved to hear the pre-2005 Harry make the call, but he was a shell of himself the last few years. I think the grand slam call by Franzke was a perfect/seamless call.

  • Jordan

i’d love to hear l.a., franzke, and sarge on tv. put wheels and mccarthy on the radio

  • Ash

LA & Franzke’s call on the slam last night was fantastic. While Franzke was calling the play you hear LA freaking out in the background going “NO WAY….YES…..GET OUT……YES!” He is the least impartial announcer I’ve ever heard and I love him for it. Also, lately they’ve been more comfortable joking around and breaking each others balls during the broadcast. It seems like they are really settling in as a team. It’s always a fun listen.

I’m not an internet shit talker. Before the WS I went to that blog and wished them luck and gave them my insight into a team I watched for 162 games and two playoff series. They pretty much just told me I was wrong about everything–and were total dicks about it. SABRmetrics can’t tell you that Eva Longoria will get scared and throw the ball 15 feet over the catcher’s head while a .210 hitter drives in the game-winning run. Would a calculator convince anyone here that Pat Burrell wasn’t an inconsistent rally killer and a liability on the bases? I’m sure they have a Fangraph that shows that the Rays actually won the World Series last year.

  • will.H

mutely, the best part is that they think Smart vs. Less Smart is a cute and clever blog topic. and at the bottom they have a key and it says Rays-Smart and Phillies–less smart. I GET IT!!!

    …or Ibanez, whatever.

Where can I get the Werewolves of London song with Raul? Anyone find a link?
