Ruben Amaro is looking to buy this year – that’s what we’re hearing from the rumor mill as the deadline approaches and the Phillies have taken 6 of their last eight games, including four from the two teams ahead of them in the NL East standings. It’s good to see, it feels good when your team wins, they are looking stronger lately, okay. Maybe they have a chance to put a run together and storm into first place with about half a season to play. We’ve all read about how the Braves and the Nationals have been playing around .500 ball since Atlanta won 12 of 13 to begin the season. Hell, the Mets collapsed in 2007 and the Phillies were hot enough to take advantage, right? The Rockies that same year got hot enough to force a tie-breaker, squeak into the playoffs after 163 games, sweep the NLD&CS before getting leveled by the Red Sox.

From Todd Zolecki’s depressing read yesterday:

The Phillies considered trading Rollins, 34, last July, but in the end held onto him. He is in the second year of a three-year, $33 million contract that includes an $11 million option for 2015 that automatically vests based on 600 plate appearances in 2014 or 1,100 plate appearances in 2013-14. If he is healthy, that should not be a problem, but that money owed is why he will be difficult to trade.

Of course, it also must be noted Rollins cannot be traded without his approval. He has 5-and-10 rights.

I’ve got the power,” he said last month.

standings

Oh yeah, that’s some good shit

A dispatch from The Zo Zone last night:

“No one has really stepped out and gone crazy. We’re only seven back. We had one streak where we’ve really played well and we’ve only had a fairly brief time where we’ve had our team on the field. We’ll find out. I honestly think it’s going to end up going to July 20 or 30 or somewhere around then when we’ll decide which direction we’re going to go.”

That’s a Ruben Amaro quote about why he’s going to wait until the last minute to decide whether or not he’ll buy or sell. Seems to me that he’ll be selling and that he knows it right now. Read more »

Can I write something about the game that this expression doesn’t already say? (h/t @BckwoodsPayback)

Ryan Howard squandered opportunities and killed a rally, and De Fratus got Puig’d on an 0-2 slider and that’s pretty much the end of that.

Lost in Zolecki’s recap was Greinke’s perfectly executed backhanded compliment to the Phillies’ aging core: Read more »
